Texas Tech Friday Morning Notes - Harrell is the Player of the Week Edition

DTN News:

The weekend of Saturday, September 30, 2006 I drove to Tulsa to visit some law school friends, play some golf, throw some washers, and watch a little football. Around 6:00 a.m. that Saturday morning I received a phone call from my Mom letting me know that my grandfather passed away early that morning. He had been sick for quite some time so it wasn't necessarily a huge shock, but I was stunned nonetheless. Death is never expected. The funeral would be on Monday, which meant that I would need to drive back to Dallas and then drive to San Antonio on Sunday. I stayed most of the day in Tulsa and watched the Texas Tech / TAMU game with my friends. I had driven 5 hours to be with them and I wouldn't need to drive home until later that day. I left Tulsa right after Harrell threw that touchdown pass to Robert Johnson and as you might expect, on the drive home there were times that I was elated about a football game, but incredibly sad that I was driving to bury my grandfather.

I'll remember that Texas Tech / TAMU game for the rest of my life and I find it odd that subconsciously I still associate that day with that game and probably all future games, no matter where they fall on the schedule. My grandfather raised a house-full of Aggies (his 5 sons are all Aggies) and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and farmer. I remembered my grandfather on his death day, but I'll also remember him on Saturday.

Texas Tech Football:

DTN readers were tipped off by TracySaulRulz about Graham Harrell winning the All-America Player of the Week award for the second time this year.

LAJ's Don Williams' Red Raiders Football Notebook notes the same thing that DMN's Brandon George noted yesterday that Crabtree may leave after his sophomore year. We can't worry about that stuff, there's just too much time between then and now. Enjoy the Crab-moment.

Texas Tech Basketball:

LAJ's Jeff Walker features junior/senoior center Emir Rizvic. I'm glad that Rizvic has fully healed from last year's incident with Longar Longar, and Rizvic practiced with the Bosnian national team and had this to say abou the experience:

"It was a good experience for me, especially getting to practice against those guys," said Rizvic, who averaged 3.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 16 games last season before his injury against Oklahoma. "They have great leagues in Europe and some of the guys were pro players from Spain and some of the other leagues."

Also note that the Red Raiders were picked to finish 8th in the Big 12 this year, with forward Martin Zeno receiving honorable mention honors. Teams can begin practice tonight and here's the schedule for the men and women Red Raiders:

In Lubbock, Texas Tech fans can take in a season preview of the men's and women's teams at United Spirit Arena. Women's coach Kristy Curry will introduce her team at 6:40 p.m. Coach Bob Knight will follow with the men's team, and the Red Raiders will take the court at 7 p.m.

Texas Tech:

Texas Tech's Double-T Association will induct eight new members to it's Hall of Honor today at 6:30 p.m.:

The class comprises football players James Gray, Jerry Johnson and Ron Reeves; basketball players Carl Ince, Jason Sasser and Jeff Taylor; tennis player Jake Broyles and volleyball player Jill Burness Stowe. The group will be recognized again at Saturday's Tech-Texas A&M football game.

James Gray was an incredible running back for Texas Tech and you can see some of his highlights from the 1989 Texas Tech v. Texas game and Texas Tech's matchup against Duke in the All-American Bowl:
