Around SBN: Missouri Crashes The Top Line After Kansas Win

TESTS

I have looked at the 2007 football schedule, and I see 5 major tests for Tech this season.  The 5 tests are:  Oklahoma State, A&M, Mizzou, Texas, and Oklahoma.

As of right now, we are 0-1 in the tests (Lost to Okla St.).  Tech cannot lose more than 3 games this season and still be considered as a legitimate contendor.

In order for Tech to start getting national recognition, we will have to stop relying on statistics and previous success.  No matter what Harrell and Crabtree do individually, if the team can't notch wins against the "big boys" of the Big 12, then nobody will ever take Tech seriously.

Last year, Tech had leads on both Texas and OU in the 4th quarter of each game.  We lost both of those games.  In order for Tech to get recognition and Tech's players to get the recognition that they deserve, Tech needs to pass these tests.

There's not a "gimmie" game
the rest of the season. Every one of those teams can beat you on any given day. It's a cliche, but it's true. Okay, every team but Baylor, it's Baylor.

Okie State game
couldn't have become more disappointing. Had either UT or OU looked a good bit better than they have thus far, I wouldn't have felt like we missed a terribly big opportunity against OSU since one of them could be relied on to beat us. Now I feel like we have a rael shot at going after at least one of them, and certainly we'd be in incredible position to take the Big 12 South sans the loss to OSU.

That Oklahoma State game
was pretty aweful.  But as mad as I was seeing us lose a game that we should have won, it was kinda like a blessing in disguise.  What I mean is this:  Our defense was piss poor in that game and had been against UTEP and we let Rice put up like 24 points on us.  Let's be honest, if Tech had won that Okla. State game, Setenchich would probably still be here, and Tech's defense would still be soft.  I haven't been able to see either of the two games since, but from what I hear our defense has a completely new personality.  Our defense has just been injected with enthusiasm and toughness.  I don't know what Ruffin did to these guys but I hope that it keeps up!

Now, these two games were against two of the worst teams on Tech's schedule, but still, there has apparently been a dramatic change!  I love it that Ruffin is not playing favorites.  Getting Brian Duncan, Blake Collier, Bront Bird, and Victor Hunter on the field is part of what this team needs.  Tillman was soft, and Chad Hill has knowledge and experience in the system, but lets face it, he isn't the most gifted athlete.  Marlon Williams will be an All-Big 12 linebacker before his career is done, you can count on that!

You know our offense will continue to produce and put points on the board.  We are 2nd in the nation in scoring per game.  With an offense so explosive, I just want the defense to get a few stops here and there.  This new attitude by the defense gives me a new hope that we may just be able to contend and knock off Texas and/or OU. (I would take just one, but both would be ideal)

Re:A&M game
My take is that Tech's "D" is on the rise, while the "O" is standing pat, maybe even a little down. A&M is predictably pro run. Their "D" is down (uh-oh-poooorrr agggiiiieeees).
Conclusion: Tech will win in a 'war'......48-24.

BIG XII South
The soft part of the schedule is over and the mountain ahead looms.  I don't want to overlook the A&M game, but I think the real challege is going to come against Missouri.

The South is up for grabs right now, and I can't think of another year in recent history where Tech has such a good chance of taking it.  With a win this weekend, we'd share a piece of the lead with OU.  The next few weeks are so monumentally important....Tech has yet to prove itself, and there there's no better chance then against the meat and potatoes of the South.

I don't want to jump ahead and get too optimistic, but with a banged up, jailed-up, turn-over prone UT and a good but a little bit overrated OU coming to Lubbock this year, I honestly see Missouri as a desperate win situation to propel us deep into the race for the south.
