Recruiting
I was looking at Scout.com today like I usually do everyday. I noticed that our class was moved up one spot from #32 to #31. I looked closer to find out that another one of our Juco players was bumped up to a 4-star ranking.
Our 2008 recruiting class now looks like this:
5-star players: 0
4-star players: 5
3-star players: 6
2-star players: 2
This gives Texas Tech an average star ranking of 3.23 for the 2008 recruiting class so far. The previous best class was in 2006 when Tech had an average star class of 2.88.
Also, the weekend that Tech plays Oklahoma, there are a couple of big-time recruits coming to Lubbock. Current Arkansas commit Jarius Wright (4-star, #42 WR) will be visiting. Along with Wright, Spencer Reeves (3-star, #19 LB) will be coming to the Hub City. It would be great to knock off the sooners and pick up 2 great commitments all in the same weekend!

Its better than you think
But Tech has four 4 star recruits and one 3 star that really is a 4 star as his point value is higher than one of our 4 star recruits (Still trying to understand that).
Tech is going to have the best ever class for 2008.
We are picking up one hell of a RB who gets yards after contact in Jeffers. He is 5'9" but built at 195 200lbs. He has the weight ratio to height and his size could make him very elusive along with 4.4 speed. A damn good QB Doege that has a cannon of an arm and should have some wheels even after he comes back from the injury. Then you have all those defensive players coming in.
280lb, 275lb, 265lb and a 260lb DE. The most exciting about this group is that one of these would be a natural LB. Not only that but Fowler is one of the strongest in the nation as a high schooler if not the strongest and runs a 4.5 4.6 40. That is slightly faster than any of our current LBs and he could bench press any two of them. The other exciting DE incoming is SeSay He has been tearing up the JUCO circuit and impressing the hell out of several teams. In fact, USC is trying to steal him but he has stood firm for coming to Tech! The other DE in Dixon is also a very solid rushing DE that was a 4 star for Tech back in 2004. His play has remained about the same so he would make an excellent strong side DE to take on rushing blockers.
Offensive line recruits. Remember the name Gallington. He is 320lbs with wheels and be a natural tackle who can finally match up against speedy DEs. He is a damn Stud and has lots of PCs most of which because of his speed and agility. Most OL run a 5.4 to 5.8 40. Gallington runs a 5.0 to 5.2. In three runs he did a 5.0 a 5.3 and a 5.2 in back to back runs according to Rivals. Thats damn good for a 320lb Tackle
In defensive backs Routt is huge. At 6 foot he has size and with 4.4 speed can run with anyone. Which means that he can not get burned by speed. That is something that has been lacking in the past. Most of our DBs have been converted offensive players some never playing CB or safety before. But recruiting in a tall and speedy natural CB is huge in my book!
The rest of the recruiting class is solid. If I left someone out its only because I do not know that much about them in general or there is no information about talent level or what they have done. Would love to hear about the rest. But from what I have been told all are solid and will take Tech up a level.
What is missing in this recruiting class this year. Defensive Tackles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Tech really needed some recruits this year, its definately a couple DTs. Tech just does not have the DTs who can destroy or clog the middle. If we do not get one, I would suggest Leach convert a couple of OL who are about 290-300lbs and turn the dogs loose on defense! Most teams other than say Oklahoma and Texas have OL who weigh in around 280lbs on average. So why not let them try and blow a 300lb off the ball. It just will not happen. Thus its an improvement of not seeing a DT 15 yards down the field getting his butt kicked.
The other missing position is LineBackers!!!!!!!! Although not as badly need as DTs it is a severe weak area that we definately need to improve on.
The last area is TE. Personally, Tech needs to improve in the size of this position. TEs have traditionally been a very productive position. However, Tech has never really put Size and power into that position. Instead its always been WRs playing TE. But Tech really needs a 6'8" 280lb TE that runs a 4.6 who can punish secondaries. All top programs have this size and kind of TE and if Tech should ever get one well Damn look out.
Tech is ranked 26th in the nation right now in recruiting. Expect that to improve to around 24th by December 1. There is a couple of studs out there including one 5 star who is actually looking Tech's direction. Tech just needs to impress those hold outs in the next three games.
