Texas-OU.
Watching this game of bad calls. The Big XII needs to have a talk with it’s refs.
On the upside for Tech, neither team looks very good against the pass.

what happened?
Nebraska actually looks like they know what they are doing. Big change from last week’s Mizzou debacle.

not sure what the play count is, but they seem to be relying on the run and burning clock. And we can’t seem to stop the run.

they have over 40 plays to our 21. they have total control of the clock and our defense is out there too long. They’ve had possesion well over twice as long as us.

and they are mixing the run and pass very well, 50/50

Defense is playing on its heels. The safeties are making all of the tackles. Not a good thing.

Assuming we hang on
Tech might hold it’s spot in the rankings. Definitely not moving up any. They look bad on defense. Offense seems to be it’s usual self, save the first drive.

Leach is a crazy man...did he just go for it on 4th and 4 from his own 34?
crazy

i didn’t know nebraska was capable of moving this fast. they’ve chewed up so much damn clock today, i thought they’d only be able to move about 18 yards when they got the ball back with 2 minutes.

send carona back to wherever he came from

i hope this drops tech in the polls a few spots to inspire the defense to play a little better and make some important stops during the game instead of waiting until overtime.

I don’t think them dropping will be a problem. I think I saw Bird go out with an injury and L.A. Reed as well.

"No guts no glory"...
I think Mike Leach quoted Sharon Stone in the post game interview. I thought I wouldn’t be surprised at anything he said. Needless to say, I am surprised.

There is a HUUUUGE problem...
The D was TERRIBLE!!!!!!!! Nebraska’s offense isn’t known for being good. Hopefully the defense was just off today. Obviously, this was a trap game, but still, the offense was amazing. 7 possessions and 294 yards (the last possession of the 4th quarter was a 29 second “heave-fest”). If the defense can get off the field, this team has a ton of potential. Hopefully this win will bring us down to earth and we will be prepared for A&M next week.

postgame thoughts...
Awesome with penalties…only 2 for 20 yards, and one was the bonehead unsportsmanslike conduct…Offensive looked very good, whenever they had the chance. Time of possession was frustrating for us…Carona is way to big of a liability right now. Defense looked bad, just letting them chug away down the field the whole game…Batch needs to be the main back (97 yds on ground and 53 in the air; woods 36 ground 2 air)…Harrell was held below 300 yards, but didn’t get too many chances to throw today…and I agree with techfan5730 totally

Note to self...
Prior to next game purchase the usual game snacks and beverages….and investigate the availability of home difibrillators.

Nebraska executed perfectly their gameplan for having any chance at winning. Our defense just needs to step it up to make sure that teams cannot come out and march down the field like that. K State started like that last week, but then came unwound. We can’t count on teams to fall apart, we have to be more aggressive and dominate like the #7 team should play. Otherwise, every other team will come out and burn the clock and keep it close as long as they can keep our offense off the field. If it’s third and eight, we gotta quit playing soft and giving up 10 or 12 yards.
by pcrawttu on Oct 11, 2008 6:32 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I would rather try for some big defensive plays and potentially give up some big plays than let them consistently march down with 8 minute drives every time. We need to make them earn it.

I would also like to add that it is a good day when so many other obnoxious teams lose… a&m, oklahoma, notre dame, and michigan (at home to Toledo?!?! i wonder if Rich Rodriguez thinks the 4 million dollar breaking contract with WVU is still worth it?)

Nebraska dominated Tech’s defensive line all day, which is the primary reason this was a close game. Tech wasn’t missing tackles on run plays, they just didn’t have anybody close to the lane because Nebraska was doing an incredible job blocking on those plays.
They had a nice passing drive late when the clock was running out too.
Hopefully Tech can fix whatever’s wrong with the dline.

Easing my nerves was finding out that Rajon wasn’t playing today. He will definately hlep the D once he gets back, especially against the run

Was rain a factor
I have been saying this right from the start that I see very little improvement in the defense from last year. McNeil may have improved the morale of the defense but there is very little qualitative difference. The only reason our defensive stats have looked better is because we haven’t played anybody yet. We will bleed to defeat if we continue to defend like this in the second half of our big XII draw.
Having said this I was wondering how much of a factor was rain in making the game closer than it should have been?

Didn’t really rain. A little sprinkle early, but no rain.

Crazy game
Wow, that was crazy. Tech’s offense looked quite good – when they had the ball. Tech’s defense, as many have said, is still the reason we won’t win a championship. Today’s game proved that simply trying to get into a shootout isn’t always a great gameplan. Especially when the opponent doesn’t play by our rules and plays keep away all day long.
I am not a bit surprised Nebraska nearly (and very likely should have) won this game. McNeil’s defense, to me, is not a lick better than previous versions. The time of possession is all you need to see. No way can Tech be what we hope with out major, major improvement in the cover skills of the CBs, blitzes from time to time, and a run D. Our defensive stats were proven today to be a bit skewed.
But a buddy of mine, who had no rooting interest, thought it was the best game he’d seen this year. So we got that goin for us : )

Great game....
Red Raider Nation.
You guys have two phenoms on offense. I wish we could have brought a better defense against you today, but c’est la vie. We will try to beat you next year in Lincoln :)
By the way….I don’t care what they ask him, I love watching your coach get interviewed….dude cracks me up.

Thanks
But if our “D” does not stand up and make stops when it needs to early (not late or in OT) we will taske that bitter pie of defeat soon. The rest of our schedule is anything but easy and if this team does not get downright mean & vicious we are not going to reach any form of lofty heights. Nebraska really came out with a huge heart and a lot of fire and desire. They will win most of the rest of their games and be in a good bowl, setting themselves up for a great future. Good luck to you….except when you play Tech, that is….

Ruffin
did nothing to improve this defense, as we all thought he had. Where are the blitzes? Where is the pressure from the line? Where the heck are they running to? It sure isn’t the ball carrier. Either the guys were totally unknowing of what to do or the scheme was terrible. If this “D” does not improve, “TOP 10” is going to be history and “PODUNK BOWL” will be the result. Kick Ass and win, Tech. Quit screwing around.

Said it before
and I’ll say it again. Not only is Ruffin not the answer, but our defensive players are just not very talented. We can bend-don’t-break against average teams, but yesterday showed how vulnerable we are when facing true D-I talent.

From Everything I've Heard...
Nebraska used a completely different offense that Tech hadn’t seen in film or any other research they’ve done. Ruffin chose to just play with the base D that he had in place, very little blitzing and “reading then reacting” instead of going out and forcing pressure. That would explain why our linebackers and secondary were playing so far off their men. My friend and I noted during the game that Tech wasn’t showing any stunts or blitzes and honestly I’m fine with that. Save the special packages for when you really need them rather than show them to the world too early. Our offense was clicking well enough to wear Ruffin could depend on them to save the D. We’ve all seen Tech play better D against much better offense than the Huskers (K-State) so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Defensive coaches
I agree with everyone here that defense has not improved. However, I think that our level of talent on defense has improved. Talent wise we are comparable to Missouri, Kansas , Oklahoma State, Nebraska or Colorado as far as defense is concerned. We are not elite when compared to Texas or Oklahoma but we have enough talent to make up for a competent defensive unit. However, our defense looks like a badly coached unit now. Unless we get good coaches, no matter how much talent we garner on defense, it will continue to suck. The warnings were evident in the games early on, I am now really worried about how much our defense will hold when our tough matchups of the Big XII start.
We need to get competent defensive coaching personnel if we want to become a perennial top ten football power.
