BlogPoll Ballot: Week 7

RankTeamDelta
1 Alabama : Still think they have the best win to date against Georgia. 1
2 Texas : No real question here, thought OU had the better team before the game. Wrong again. 3
3 Penn State : The class of the Big Ten. 3
4 Florida : Watched part of this game with LSU, looked very impressive. 10
5 Southern Cal : Impressive win and got the shutout. 7
6 Georgia : I didn't get to see any of this game, still wondering why Georgia's offense isn't putting up more points. 1
7 Oklahoma State : Wow. This offense scares the sh@! out of me. 8
8 Oklahoma : I really thought they were better than UT, defense looks to have more holes than I thought. 7
9 Texas Tech : Less than impressive win, I could be convinced to move them lower. 1
10 Ohio State : Pryor isn't doing it all right now, but he's doing enough. 6
11 Brigham Young : Much like TT, they didn't deserve a ranking as high as they were. 2
12 Utah : Impressive and a road win. WY is an awful team. 2
13 Boise State : This was over early, despite the score. 2
14 Virginia Tech : This week will be a big test, @ B.C. 4
15 LSU : It was the lack of defense that completely surprised me. 11
16 Missouri : Was drinking quite a bit while watching this game, so it's somewhat of a blur, just remember too many MU TO's. 13
17 Michigan State : Good win, on the road. 7
18 North Carolina : Another good win. 7
19 California : Idle. 1
20 Georgia Tech : I think this team is better than people give them credit. 6
21 Kansas : Defense played well, or should I say that the CU offense was pretty bad? --
22 Tulsa 3
23 Wake Forest : Watched a bunch of this game against Clemson, impressive win against better athletes. 3
24 TCU : Back on track, defense is really good. 2
25 Vanderbilt I'm thinking they should drop out completely. Should it be S. Florida, Florida St., Minnesota? 12

Dropped Out: Northwestern (#17), South Florida (#22), Ball State (#23).

I'm serious. I was

drinking quite a bit, but they just used Missouri. Those running backs are going to have a field day against TT, and their defense is pretty good.

No so sure

about OK-State. They brought their A-game to Mizzou and Mizzou was flat (kind of like Tech this week). The Cowboys can score, but their D is very inconsistent. They had a good game at the right time. I don’t think they’ll beat OU, Texas or Tech this year.

Disrespect to Tech

By everyone, even their own backers. Shame on you. With all the upsets this year of top ranked teams, including OU, Tech avoided that bug and should have more respect than is being iven. ESPN is the worst. I cannot stand their announcers, regardless of who they pick to win. I still believe Tech will be the surprise team, just, for no other reason, so they can stuff it down all the naysayers’ throats, including yours.
GUNS UP! GO TECH!

I take offense to that.

I think I’m being pretty reasonable with how I’ve ranked them. The defense looked absolutely passive against Nebraska. It was so easy for NU to get 7 to 10 yards a play. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with not thinking that the Red Raiders didn’t have their best outing, and I think they’d agree. McNeill and Leach had better do something to ramp it up a bit on defense.

As far as ESPN, I don’t care what they say, I only watch that channel to watch games. I could care less what their analysts say.

You can be critical and be a fan, there’s nothing wrong with that.

And just to be clear

I hope like hell they win every game, but you can’t really expect everyone to be happy with what they happened on Saturday? So are you saying that Texas Tech played a perfect game? Did they do nothing wrong? Were there teams that played better games against better competition on Saturday? Should OSU move ahead of Texas Tech because they beat Missouri, on the road?

It is your house Seth

and I am a guest here, but I think you would have to admit that there is a lot emotion filled bile flowing in the TT house tonight. One of the things I love about this place is that most of the post are well thought out and that is due to your excellent work. I did not take TTpilk645 as a dis to your rating of TECH but more as a response to the many, many, many, negative post.
I think that we all agree that TECH will have to improve their play in several key areas to continue winning. Some of us want to revel in a OT win, and believe that coach Leach and his staff can make the same level of improvement in TECH that Coach BO did in Nebraska after their loss to Missouri. (That was a much improved Nebraska "team").
I am not defending bad play or coaching, I just want the conversation to stay civil an open to diverse opinions.

I get what you're saying

but I don’t need to prove my loyalty to anyone. If you don’t know where I stand now, then you’ve got the wrong place and the wrong dude. I think I’ve built up plenty of credit.

I’ve always tried to keep things civil and keep the conversation high-minded (as much as possible) and I think that’s continued, despite folks upset at the way we lost.

Just a little disappointed, that’s all.

would I ever doubt the loyalty of some one who puts as much effort into a fan web site as you do this one.

Now, there you go.

I just wanted to see you admit you are still a staunch Tech fan. And no, OSU played good, Mizou playd so-so. Nebraska played really good. Tech played good (O)…& bad (D), except in crunch time. Tigers & Sooners could not pull the games out. Tech did, even when their best was only OK. That has to count for something with the way teams are falling by the wayside. Where did the old saying go. “Good taems find a way to win, even on an off day?” Well, I could say Tech is a good team, and maybe Oklahoma and Missouri are not. That would be wrong, but I could say it. I just feel that until someone knocks them out, they deserve to get their high ranking. Remember, this team has not yet really jelled like we expect. NOW is when they have to push hard and wring out wins in crunch time, time-and-again. If Ruf finally lets the"D" loose, we can see another dimension of RAIDER POWER! Keep the hope.

OSU

Okie State is the surprise team, not Tech. Nobody had the Cowboys on their radar until two weeks ago. Tech was supposed to challenge for the south, and some people for some reason even had them challenging for a national title. I think it’s really only a matter of time before we see what the team is really all about…that’s not being unsupportive, it’s understanding what the product that is being put forth is really all about.

We’re six games in and Tech has really only looked impressive twice…vs. SMU and KState (I never count the I-AA games…they SHOULD pound those people into the ground, even on an off day). We’re a decent team, make no mistake. But after seeing what “elite” looks like all year from Texas, OU, Mizzou, Penn State, and now Okie State, I think it’s obvious we’re not. We put up gaudy numbers on offense, but as we’ve seen for almost a decade that doesn’t make them elite or a serious threat for titles – it makes them fun to watch most weeks. I think Tech is a half notch above the team last year. To me, that means one more win than we had in ’07.

You're absolutely right about the 'Pokes,

They are the underdog du jour in the Big XII South. Not just because of their devastating running attack, but their defense (which might not be the best but are obviously gamers) stepped up in a big way on the road, against an offense that, while maybe not quite as explosive as the Air Raid, runs much more efficiently. Honorable mention for quirky coach behavior: Gundy spent most of the 4th quarter sitting on an equipment box on the sideline, talking to his coordinators upstairs and scribbling on his clipboard; he hardly even glanced up when Mizzou managed to rally back to within striking range- turns out he was dialing up a quick strike response that made Mizzou’s defense look a lot like ours, only more confused. He’s a competent coach with confidence in his assistants to help him manage the game while he thinks the deep thoughts, and his team is going to be much more dangerous to us than they were last year.

by mojavereject on Oct 12, 2008 8:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

I don’t fear OU or UT. They will be favored to win against us, so if we pull it off it’s a huge upset. If we lose, well, that’s probably what most would expect so it’s tough to get too bent about that. But OSU…man, that team terrifies me.

by Tech92 on Oct 12, 2008 9:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think everyone is reading way too much into these games.

I am a BIG Tech fan. OSU had a heckuva game yesterday, true. I was in Lubbock so I did not see it except for the end and the highlights, but I chalk it up to this: Missouri had a bad game. OSU is a very good team and they clicked perfectly yesterday. They prob. played at their peak. It does not mean we have to start putting them up on a pedestal though and fearing them so much. It is college football. It happens. I am not saying they are not very good. They are. Point blank.

Yes, we did not play very well on special teams or defense yesterday, but I do believe Nebraska came in very hungry and played at their peak. Who knows what can happen next week? I am not going to be a naysayer though b/c the team that won yesterday would not have won the last two years. Harrell was supposed to just draw them offsides on that 4th down but the center snapped the ball anyway and he and Crab just had to ad-lib it. That was some damn good improvising, in my opinion. Also, McKinner Dixon is so damn close to chalking up 3-4 sacks a game. He and Jamar Wall pulled it out in the end. That says something I think.

College FB is squirrelly, people. Remember how we got manhandeled against Mizzou last year? But that is the same team that overpowered OU at home too. Come on Tech fans. DO NOT GET DOWN. That is not what we need right now. EVERY team has a lackluster game at times and I can guarantee you will see OSU look kinda crappy before this is all said and done. Same for OU and TX, but the real test is can that team squeeze out a W when they are not playing at their peak? And I say Tech can. If the Insight Bowl did not make you a believer, nothing will…and I believe.

by theultimateunderdog on Oct 12, 2008 10:08 PM CDT   0 recs

I have to add one more thing about the defense after watching the animated plays.

Notice how many stops the defense had but later in the game, they started to fold…Granted it was not what we wanted, but there were some stops there. It is not all bad news on defense.

It is all bad news in the kicking game though and that may come back to shoot us in the foot in some crucial games. We had Trlica when we beat UTEP in the close one, the Insight Bowl and the Gator Bowl. He pulled through on the big ones. That is one area I don’t see much of a chance because it is bad…I feel for Carona though. You know the kid is trying.

471 yards?

San Jose State did better than we did.

I am as thrilled as anyone with our exciting overtime victory and was shouting as loud as anyone when Wall picked off that pass to clinch victory. But we can’t win the games we all want Tech to win if we play defense like this. Our offense needs more than 48 plays.

Go register. Or else.

SJS

Im sure they had the ball longer than 19 min. If the Defense would have gotten some stops the game would have been alot different. NU couldn’t exactly stop our Offense either. One good thing is that we get OSU at home this year and they usually play bad in LBK.

fans

i don’t think there is a tech fan that doesn’t want tech to win out…What i posted in my fan post was what i thought of the game as a whole not the season not the prev games but the last game….we sucked it up on D and played awsome on Offense. and i don’t think anyone would disagree and not think that the guys playing out there won’t step it up for an OU UT OSU or KU team. but they were not close to there best agains this NU team that came to play and played hard.

everyone on espn thinks that tech always goes out and has a crap game agains someone that we are supposed to win…well we have improved we were supposed to win and we did…not like i wanted them to(66-21) i think my prediction was but it was a win and we are………………………………………

UNDEFEATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO TECH

we can win every game…not like saturday more like the prev saturday….we did win we will win..

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

by texastfan on Oct 13, 2008 11:20 AM CDT   0 recs

one more thing

I forgot but why are those kids out there playing?

for us the fans….i love it

and as a fan who loves football and texas tech i will be critical some times like most fans but i am here to stay as i always will be like all you will be. if we see the mistakes then leach definitly does see those that gives me hope becuase leach is a smart coach that takes alot of risks.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

How can you justify moving Georgia Tech up 6 ranks?

They barely beat some no-name 1-AA team 10-7.

by techfan5730 on Oct 13, 2008 4:55 PM CDT   0 recs

I dont want to nitpick

But they beat Gardner-Webb, a 1-AA team with TWO names (and a hyphen!)

by mojavereject on Oct 13, 2008 6:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

OOOOH!!!!!!!

TWO NAMES?!!! HOLY CRAP DUDE!!!!!!!!! WHY AREN’T THEY LISTED AS #1?!!!
AND A HYPHEN???!!! JUST GIVE THEM THE BCS TROPHY NOW!!!!!!!
