No More Carona-Extra Points
The Donnie Carona kicking expirament is over, at least for the forseeable future. LAJ's Don Williams and DT's Alex Ybarra each reported last night that senior kicker Cory Fowler will replace Carona in extra points and short field goals. Here's Captain Leach from Williams' article:
“We’re going to play Fowler for the extra points and things like that,” Leach said.
He said Fowler also will handle at least short field goals. Carona will continue to kick off.
“Donnie just needs some consistency, and some of that just takes time,” Leach said. “And that’s kind of how we used to do it anyway - we’d split that up. I’d rather not split it up, but we used to have the kickoff guy and have the extra point/field goal guy. I’d rather not do it that way, but it looks like that’s what we need to do.”
Even with the picture above, and all I know about kicking is what I've watched on television, but doesn't Carona look uncomfortable in the photo above? Seems like all of his weight is on his non-kicking leg and leaning backwards. Also notice the turf granules, was he dragging his toe the entire kick? That could lend itself to not having much power behind a kick.
And it sounds as if Carona's teammates are shaking their head, trying to figure out what went wrong, but they still want to see him succeed. Here's Eric Morris from Ybarra's article:
"He's a young guy and we need to work really hard right now at keeping him up and not letting him get down on himself," Morris said. "Allowing him to know that we're there for him, and we're supporting him. But he also needs to start making some field goals."
And Hamby:
"I'm not even gonna talk about that, that's just terrible," center Stephen Hamby said of the play. "No comment on that. That got bad real fast."
Williams has a little bit of information on your new kicker:
Fowler transferred to Tech from San Jacinto College, where he spent one season as a pitcher in the baseball program. The last 21/2 seasons, when the Red Raiders have needed an onside kickoff, Fowler has been the kicker in that role.
Fowler is from The Woodlands, where he was a high school teammate of current and former Tech players Daniel Charbonnet and Danny Amendola. As a high-school senior, he made 13 of 17 field goals and was named Class 5A third-team all-state by The Associated Press. He was 4 for 5 his junior year.
Fellow blogger RaiderAde (DTN user ayleein) has watched Fowler in practice and hasn't been overly impressed with him:
I know it's a move that will please a lot of discouraged fans, but I've seen them practice and I haven't been more impressed by Cory Fowler there. Granted, some players don't perform equally in practice and real game situations, and hopefully that will be the case for the walk-on senior.
In any event, I hope that Carona is mentally still with it, he can shake this off this demotion and move forward and still be a productive player for this team. I had high hopes for Carona early this season and I still do. I hope he feels the same way.
As far as Saturday's game against Aggie, all I can say is just hold your collective breaths after every touchdown.

Kicking
Shoot, I’d almost bet that Lacoure could drop-kick extra points with a little practice.
Other than Doug Flutie, I wonder when the last time a drop-kick was used in a real game.
Oh man
At least when Carona was up I wasn’t surprised when it got blocked or was short. Now I have to start the emotional roller coaster all over again?
Soccer
They sould get someone from the soccer team to come kick. I bet there is a diamond in the rough on campus somewhere.
Well, I hope the kid gets it figured out. He was clearly good enough in high school to earn a scholarship. And if anything is pretty similar from level to level, it’s kicking. The field is the same size, the goalposts are the same width (except the NFL), and you still have to get the kick up over guys 6’4"+.
I’m pulling for him to get it squared away. Poor guy has taken a beating here and elsewhere (including by me).
Well
Everyone seems to like Carona a lot, he must be a great kid because I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much support behind a kicker who is sucking. Hopefully he’ll be able to return to this role vastly improved, now that he doesn’t have to go to sleep with visions of blocked PAT’s dancing in his head. A change definitely needed to be made, and good luck to Fowler going forward.
We don't need....
……..no steeeeeen-king extra points!!!!!

I'm no psychologist, but...
Carona’s problem is that he is thinking about it too much, just like countless other kickers who have had careers derailed by their own brain. If I recall from somewhere, he was a good high school athlete and played other positions in addition to kicker. That means he didn’t have to sit on the sidelines the whole game dwelling on the very few opportunities he will have throughout the game. He just came in when he it was needed and then forgot about it.
Plus, he’s still just a kid, and probably isn’t mature enough to work his way out of all problems. Especially ones that manifest into team, conference, state, and even national news on espn.
The only way to help him is by putting him in a big steel cage with pit bulls and bees for the whole game so he is busy fending for his life. Then after Tech scores and needs him for a quick field goal, they can let him out on a big retractable leash to go kick. He will be so relieved to be out of his cage that the kick will be cake. Leach can also make it interesting by giving him incentives for making field goals. If he makes one, he gets a stick to take back into the cage. If he makes another, he can have a tbull whip, then a taser, and so on…the more he makes, the better weapons he gets to fight the dogs. Problem solved. No thinking and he’ll probably get a little tougher.
