5 Reasons Texas Tech Will Lose: Kansas Edition

Reason #1: Kerry Mier and Dezmon Briscoe. Click.

Both of these guys can absolutely bring it. Last year, Kansas lost 3 of their top 5 receivers, but this year, Meier and Briscoe have more than picked up the slack. Earlier this week Tech92 talked about how it may be more important to contain Meier than Briscoe, but I'd maintain that Texas Tech had better watch for both. I'm still having nightmares of Texas A&M defenders breaking free for long touchdowns, if Johnson could hit an open receiver or if the line could keep from holding. The combination of a possession receiver and a guy who can get behind a secondary scare me to no end. And Briscoe is not small by any means (6'3"/200) so Jamar Wall and to a certain extent L.A. Reed had better bring their A game on Saturday.

Reason #2: Attacking the Quarterback

Kansas has been fairly successful at getting to the quarterback, ranked 37th in the nation and 5th in the Big 12. The difference is that it's either feast or famine for the Jayhawks. In 2 of KU's 7 games, the Jayhawks have been shut out for sacks, but when they're on, their on. Granted, this streak stars off with Sam Houston St., but up until the Oklahoma game, KU had 3.0 sacks a game. It should also be noted that Kansas garners 10.0 of the 15.0 sacks at home. I'm guessing that the coaching staff is going to work overtime to figure out how to give Harrell a number of different looks throughout the game in the hopes that Jake Laptad and Joe Mortensen can get to Harrell early and often.

Reason #3: Reesing Can Get It Done Too

Reesing is one of my favorite quarterbacks to watch. Perhaps its the fact that we're both 5'9" and as white-bread as it gets, but Reesing is so much fun to watch because he makes plays, plain and simple. One of the things that makes him so much more dangerous is his ability to scramble, especially outside of the pocket and Texas Tech has always had problems controlling opposing quarterbacks who are smart about running. Let's not forget that Reesing is completing close to 70% of his passes, and averaging almost 8.2 yards per attempt. That's a very healthy number considering Kansas has the 84th ranked rushing offense in the entire nation. Of Reesing's 5 interceptions, 2 of those came last week and Kansas was still able to put up 31 points. Stop Reesing and Texas Tech has a good chance to win, but let him play his typical game and it could be a long afternoon.

Reason #4: Soft Texas Tech Pass Defense

This scares me like no other and it obviously goes along with Reason #3 above, but if the Texas Tech defense was an animal it would be a armadillo and the rush defense is the tough outer shell, while the pass defense is the soft underbelly. That's right, an armadillo. Texas Tech ranks 103rd in the nation in pass defense, along the likes of Marshall, Navy, Idaho, etc. The most troubling aspect is that Texas Tech is allowing opposing defenses to complete 63% of their passes and with Reesing being a experienced quarterback, there's a pretty good chance that the Texas Tech pass defense gets exposed. The item that doesn't show up on the stat sheet is the opponent splitting the cornerback and safety while opposing receivers safely into the endzone. The Kansas passing game is not just Meier and Briscoe, but both of those guys can get the job done against this pass defense.

Reason #5: Is It Going to Happen?

Aren't we all asking ourselves, each week, if this is the week? I know that I've been cringing during each game because the last thing that I want is the bad loss. Texas Tech was favored in each game prior to this week's game so there was no reason to lose, but this week Texas Tech faces a Kansas team who has every right to believe that they should and will win Saturday's game. Quite a few ingredients are there, Leach's struggles on the road, where he's had 24 of his 37 losses, Texas Tech is coming off of a good win against an in-state opponent, and we're all just waiting for the pin to drop. There's only 5 more opportunities for there to be a bad game and I hope like hell it doesn't start on Saturday.

What a great metaphor. At first I was like where is he going with this. Haha

Well, if the worst case scenario plays out and Tech loses this game it wouldn’t likely go down as a bad loss. KU is favored in the game. Small consolation if we lose.

depends on how the loss comes. If it’s like Missouri last year, then yeah, it’s a bad loss.

Also, they can’t look forward to Texas.

Texas Tech

has made strides in a positive manner that should enable them to win this game. I know Kansas can be a scarey team to play against, but so can Tech. I will not give up on this team, even if KU gets lucky and wins. If Tech plays as they should they have a chance to go undefeated. A rash statement, yes. But that is because I have seen some things with this team that bodes well for the rest of the year. A&M played their best game of the year last week but Tech got it together and pulled out the win. Kansas is tough and this could be a copy of that game. Tech has learned a lot about itself over the last few years and the seniors on this team are ready to lead this years team to the top. And I am with them. GO TECH!

I think we’re all with them. I don’t think it’s rash to believe we can go 12-0, but it’s unlikely given who we’ll be playing. It’s tough for ANY team to go 12-0 no matter who you are. I certainly hope they have some magic in them and can pull it off this year, though. What a party that would be in Lubbock!

A loss to KU, by the way, does not destroy our season. We’d be 7-1 with a huge game against UT the next week. Either way, we have a huge game against UT next week. It’s not the end of life if we lose, it’s the end of perfection. I can live with that if I have to – and really, I have zero say in the outcome. Any team can beat an opponent on any given Saturday. It’s why they play.

Tech has every bit as good a scheme as KU and just as much talent in key spots. To lose this game would be a disapointment, but not the end of the year nor a big upset in the college football world. So if Tech comes out and plays great but still loses (which does happen), there’s nothing to do but tip the cap to KU. I am guessing a KU fan would say the same if you flip that.

A lot of people are geeked about the idea of Gameday in Lubbock if Tech wins Sat. I could care less if Gameday comes to Lubbock or not, because you know Lee Corso will throw on that gawd awful UT horn hat and pick them. ESPN is horny for UT and Colt McCoy until they lose.

Vegas thinks Tech loses

Vegas thinks that Tech will lose by 2 from missed PATs.

That is the line as of 3pm Wednesday.

Vegas seems to think that with the Raiders on the road with a bad kicking game and a severely weak pass defense is ripe of Kansas at home to squeak out a victory from an offensive shoothout.

With 67 as the O/U Vegas seems to think that both teams with score around 34 points.

Historically however, Tech has fared against the Jayhawks 9 of the last 10 showings. Tech only loss to Kansas was in Lubbock in 2006 in Double OT.

Expect a Tech victory in Lawerence where Tech has never lost. The average score in Lawerence is 16 points. Thus expect a 38 to 24 win for Tech this saturday!

Kansas is Favored

I think some presure will be off Tech this week because they are now back to the roll of under dog that they normally play from. All media expects Tech to fail and lose the next four games. I think Tech will play lights out and presure free from being looked at as 21 point favorites (Neb, A&M).

I think everyone can see that Tech has been trying to do to much on the field during games that they are projected to win big. I think the presure is not as much this week with more then half of the national media picking Kansas.

Go Tech!

Hey, Kansas fan here

Feel free to come over to Rock Chalk Talk and voice your opinions till tomorrow morning, we’ve already had a couple Tech fans over there voicing good opinions. http://www.rockchalktalk.com/

Very nice write up here. A few responses form this side

1. You’re dead on about Meier and Briscoe. As you may or may not know, Meier is the backup Quarterback and started 5 or so games as a freshman before giving up the reigns to Reesing after injuries. He is such a great athlete that Mangino had to get him on the field somewhere. He did last year as a receiver and hasn’t looked back (it’s hard to believe that Meier still practices with the QB’s 90% of the time). He knows where everyone on the field is supposed to be and has some of the most sure-hands of any college receiver I’ve seen….. Just check out this catch guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uemzqLwbnv8

Briscoe, a sophomore is a poor-mans Michael Crabtree. Don’t jump all over me, I know Crabtree is better and he’s proved it, but Briscoe is a couple steps behind him and the other talented guys for one of the best WR in the Big 12.

2. No doubt that QB pressure is going to be key. Personally, I don’t think we can get to Harrell unless we blitz some LB’s. The problem there, is that now Tech will have an extra receiver open and will move the ball all day. This has been KU’s biggest problem all year. The secondary of KU is not as bad as people want to make them, it’s just the pass-rush that has been so lacking that forces our secondary to cover for 5-6 seconds. This to me, is the key to game.

3. You hit it on the head. Reesing is amazing. For KU’s sake, I hope you Tech fans get to see exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t already, check out this play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOTTfupfp6o

4. Can’t say I know much about your Pass D so I won’t speak to it. What I will say I think is key, is your ability to stop our run game. I’m hoping that Mangino tries to get the ground game going and control some clock. If Tech’s D steps up and stops a new-found KU run game, KU will have a long day.

5. My biased opinion, KU gets the job done at home and squeaks out a victory. If this game is in Lubbock, I think Tech pulls it out. It could definitely go either way, though. Should be a real fun one, and I’ll be tailgating early in the morning and hopefully in the stadium if I can find a ticket.

Tech has never lost in Lawerence

I can tell you straight, Tech will win and keep the it in the win side of the series.

I will tell ya, Montana Mikes is a good place to have a victory party when it over Raider Fans.

Its not far from the stadium and its by the Hillcrest Mall on Iowa Street. Its about a block and a half off of 9th street Its 10something as address goes. Can not remember exact address. But there is only two main ways out after the game depending on where you park. The best parking is on the northside with some covered garage which is still free from my understanding. You go west on 9th to Iowa Street then take a left.

The other is the main drag to the stadium on 6th street and park where you can find a spot. If you go out on 6th street go west to Iowa Street and take a right. It will be on your left as you come up on Hillcrest Mall.

It will be a great victory! Montana Mikes is just the kind of place that will just finish off a perfect day.
