Why I think Tech beats Texas...

Texas is the best team in the country. No doubt. That’s why they’re #1. Sometimes #1 gets beaten.  They can have a bad day.  They can run into a team playing way over it's collective heads.  They can underestimate a team that has yet to be really tried. Tech has thrived on the lack of respect and the doubt this season. If Tech wins, they will have beaten the best team in the country, and a team that has proven they deserve to be in these types of games.  I want to see Tech get its props if that happens.

The upside for Tech is that before every game so far, everyone has dismissed them, bad talked their defense, and guaranteed that this was the game they would lose. After every game, the same people (and the Big 12 hating east coast media elite) have then trashed the team Tech just beat by saying “well, they just weren’t that good”. That is what some folks are now saying about Kansas. But they just won’t be able to say that about Texas…

Texas is as good as we think. Knowing that will help Tech. Texas and their fans dismissing Tech can only be in Tech’s favor.

Everything will have to go right for Tech to get a win.  But I think they can do it.  Listen, there are two main things that will contribute to a Tech victory in Lubbock:

1. If Texas trips up… at all. They need to play nearly a perfect game, which means they need to score on virtually every drive without a turnover. If I were uT's coaches, I would assume Tech is going to do so, even if they may not.

2. If Texas players come into the game with an attitude of dismissing a very good Tech team... the same attitude evident in some of the teams we have played this year, and the same attitude now evident on the Texas blog.

I warned the overconfident KU fans not to do what many of your fans here are doing. Mack Brown himself said that many Texas fans were “stupid” because they had the luxury of not watching film of OSU. I suggest some of you watch the film of the Kansas game.

Granted, KU is not Texas. Texas gets all the respect from us it is due.

Coach Mack Brown had this to say about some Texas fans:

"You all are fools," Brown said. "Absolute fools."

Brown said he even heard some people talking during the week about a burnt orange blowout (against OSU).

"It's really an advantage when you don't watch film," he said. "Because then you can be stupid."

I predict a Tech win, because I don’t believe Texas players or their fans have any idea what to expect in Lubbock. If Texas comes in with the right idea and mindset, they will win. I don’t think they will.

Peace

I like your confidence. I think this game will go down as one of the best of the year when all is said and done. Texas creates some unique matchup problems for Tech on the outside, but you know what? Texas’ safties haven’t proven anything to me this season. I think Tech will create some pretty lopsided matchup’s, as well.

If Tech can focus on getting the ball out in under three seconds, that solid Texas D-line won’t be much of a factor. I see our WRs turning the 6 yard toss into 15 yd gains because of their athleticism.

Our great success on third down will also have to continue, but I see no reason why it can’t. Texas is a great football team offensively, but they aren’t exactly world beaters on defense so we’ll get points and move the ball with great success – as usual.

If we can force McCoy to throw downfield more than he likes, our chances go up. Colt is amazing up to about 12 yards. After that, his accuracy drops way off (probably true of most QBs, but I think his is more pronounced- I’ll research this to prove that out.).

Texas also has an average, at best, running game. There is not a pounder on that team like we’ve had to plan for in year’s past. With Tech’s newfound success running, I feel it causes Muschamp to work on more things than he normally does in a week. That’s time taken away from planning for the pass. That works in our favor a great deal. Remember, he only gets 20 hours this week with his team to make whatever adjustments and schemes. He’s a great DC, so he can do it…but I think we’re better at executing our offense than they will be at executing their defense.

No Idea What to Expect

Your argument seems to be that Texas will lose because they won’t take Tech seriously. But then you quote Mack Brown as calling out Texas fans as “stupid” and “fools” for not taking Okie State seriously.

I’m just curious…why do you think Texas’ coaching staff (and, as a result, the players) would take Okie State seriously, but not Tech?

I know UT...

You can see the same ol UT attitude already on the Burnt Orange blog. One guy actually said that Texas was through the tough part of their schedule and didn’t have a single balanced offensive juggernaut left to play. Really?

Listen, as I said. Texas is really, really good. But no one has taken Tech seriously until AFTER they have played us. Every analysis I’ve seen coming out of Austin is that OSU was the toughest team you’ll have to face this year.

So… we’ll see.

I definitely think Brown is taking Tech seriously. We’ll see if the team does too.

I think it’s one thing for fans not to take Tech seriously – they have zero impact on the actual game and so much of that is false bravado hiding a small unit. But I am positive the Texas players and coaches take Tech exceedingly seriously.

Texas away from DKR

Has Texas played a road game at all this year against an OK team. In Dallas Texas has 50,000 fans there so that can’t really be an away game. Same goes for playing at UTEP pro UT crowd. I guess the only road game they have played was a night game in Colorado which is a bad team.

All of Texas games against good teams have been in Austin. See how Texas can play in a road game at night. Texas is a great team and it will be a tough game, but I am real interseted to see how Texas does on the road.

I go to a few Texas games every year, very suprised at the crowds of 99,000 they have and how quit they still are. Great fans but a little to Wine and Cheese for Lubbock.

One game at a time,
Go Tech

I hope the Hype doesnt

go to our head. We really need Leach to keep them grounded and not get caught up in the media and hype. I apologize about not being as confident as everyone else. I am optimistically very nervous about Saturday. We will be united in Memphis suppporting the Raiders though! I hope the crowd at Jones SBC can be a factor as well! It is time for TTU to make its mark!

i agree

I dont think either team has a distinct advantage anywhere… going into this game I feel similar to KU, that we could get blown out, lose close, win close, or blowout. Assuming our offense holds serve, like they have all year, I honestly predict a shootout. Ball control to get an extra possession in either half could win us the game. I agree with GPD though, and I stated that weeks ago, the stretch UT has faced is tough but they have had the luxury of 100000 fans cheering them on… now they have essentially their first road game, and it is going to be rockin, I am drinking my hot tea and lemon all week to get my throat ready!!

Wreck em Tech!!!!!

Go here...

…for a good, no, GREAT laugh. Aggies (not all, but a LOT) are a freaking trip! Arguing over who they should root for Saturday. It’s a riot and a really fun read.

Yep...

… that’s just sad. A bunch of nobodies and their nowhere team sitting in a big circle praying for injuries and/or natural disasters. Wow. Something like this:

“I hope Harrell breaks his leg and both teams get the clap and then some terrorists shoot all the fans… then a bomb goes off as a tsunami hits the stadium… because Tech is classless.”

They better just pray that Iowa State stays worse than them so that they don’t get lonely in the cellar.

Oh, and...

…this is the kind of logical activity you get when their number one blogger (Beergut) actually claims that he’d rather have aTm’s record than be undefeated like Tech.

aggie – home of brilliant logic like “sucking means we’re getting better, and winning means things can only get worse”

I hear what you’re saying, but I don’t think that was the spirit of Beergut’s comment. What he was trying to argue, I think, was that Tech’s record this year, while great, is probably a one-year event (in his opinion). He will trade a crap season like this year (and the last several) for the expectation that things will turn the right direction and the Aggies will reclaim their spot among the top of the Big XII. Or something like that.

Oh I heard...

…what he said, and heard him try to explain it.

His point was that TECH FANS are happy with a mediocre team. Which is false.
His point is that aTm would have fired Leach. Which is just stupid.
His point is that aTm is getting better. Which could or could not be true.
His point is that Tech will get worse. Which is just wishcasting.

So no matter what he said, and no matter what he meant. It was a gloriously stupid comment, and he ought not have Tech fans defending such stupidity.

Not defending him, and I hoped my comment, “Or something like that,” made that clear.

Even before the game...

I think things set up well for us. The game is the game and I also don’t know what to expect, but I do know that Texas has had to be mentally and physically sharp for the last three weeks…which I am hoping has taken a toll to some degree. They also got the benefit of playing those games at home and the Cotton Bowl (2nd home) as others have mentioned.

It kills me that I can’t be there, but I know Lubbock and The Jones are going to be super-electric…and that is a good thing for us. I love the night game as well.

This one takes us where we want to go (although I agree with Tech92 that OSU still scares me a lot)!!

Wreck ’em!!

Well, Herbstreit just launched round one of the hyperbole…called it possibly the biggest game in the history of the state of Texas college football. He likes Tech’s chances in this one for a few reasons…of Texas’ tough games, this is the only one truly on the road; our offense creates a few matchup problems in their young secondary; we can run when we try.

I think...

too many people on both sides of this game are trying to play it out in the stat book. Stats are great, and some people live and die by them – but stats could not have predicted the Kansas blowout,or how OSU scared the crap out of Texas.

I am going on the record as putting this entire game in the “intangibles” category. And I am going to go out on a limb and predict that Texas Tech wins this game by at least twice the spread, and maybe 3 times.

This team runs on a concoction made up of 3 parts emotion, 2 parts Leach calm-gobbledygook-spellbound-gorilla reasoning, and 1 part hair-on-fire nobody beats us fantasy.

You know, sometimes David beats Goliath, and, Mixaphorically speaking, the way Leach has succeeded in keeping the reigns on the team (and the blinders as well), they might not even know that that is Goliath over there. I think if Tech loses a game this year, it will be against OSU, and that one will come down to who is the craziest that day.

The Kansas fans were trying to play this last one out on paper, and apparently so were the oddsmakers who made Kansas a favorite for the game. It made sense on paper. I know Texas is not Kansas, which is why we probably don’t beat them by 42. But it could be as much as half that, which would be a jaw-dropping stunner.

Now here is where someone drops in and gives us the obligatory “Calm down, one game at a time, Texas is really good, if we win by 1 point we will all be happy”.

I agree. But I don’t see it going down that way. And when my team is made up of a bunch of loons of the Leach variety, who is to say that I might not just be crazy… but right?

Peace
