For Tech and UT fans...Places to Go while in the Hub City

Granted Texas is one of our big rivals, but lets make sure that they understand that we aren't all, Tech fans as a whole, ruthless inappropriate fans. I'm putting this comment up based on some posts I read on Burnt Orange Nation about people being worried about their cars getting keyed, being beat up by fans, or being taunted etc. Personally, I think that's all hogwash and usually the ones who are worried are the ones who start stuff with opposing fans. FYI....Don't be that guy or girl. Be smart.

I know we sometimes get taken for fans that are brutal to opposing fans, we're inappropriate to players, fans, and the band etc, but a lot of Texas fans are just the same as us . But maybe there is something we can do to limit that and at least make sure that those who look over the site on Double T Nation and who come up to Lubbock, understand that we aren't that bad but yes we are extremely passionate about football at Texas Tech whether we're students or alums.

I thought i'd go ahead and put up a post for those of you who are coming in to make sure that any Texas fans, as well as yourselves if you've forgotten, go check out the following places to eat and drink if you have friends who are coming up. Here are my favorite places to go being a recent graduate.

#1. Chimy's - Best Nachos, Chimichangas, Margaritas, Girls without question, and most importantly atmosphere to watch a game. Everyone is just down for a good time.

#2. Crickets - Good drinks for the most part. In my opinion, Crickets is by far the best bar/restaurant to watch the game, IF you can get there early enough, that'll be close to the College Gameday set up and the stadium.

#3. Spanky's - Good beer prices from what I remember back in my days attending Tech and very good cheese fries.

#4. Buffalo Wild Wings - Obvious...good food, lots of TV's, etc.

#5. Gardski's - Good food, but not the best place to watch the game.

#6. Tom's Daiquiri Place/Blue Light - Good place to drink and pregame, probably not the best place to watch the game.

#7. Jake's Sports Bar - Pretty good food, good beer and plenty of big tv's as well. It also has a backroom where you can play pool, throw darts, and maybe even play shuffleboard. Haven't been there in over 2 years but from what I still hear its fun.

#8. Rocky La Rue's - Right up there in beer and it's on Broadway by all the other bars that are close to campus. Just watch out for TABC on Broadway.

#9. Fox and Hound - Out past the loop off Slide and 82nd. Good food and a pretty good amount of TV's to watch the game.

#10. Cagle's Steaks/Double Nickel - Great steaks...infact OUTSTANDING STEAKS!!! Hooters is close to Double Nickel to so you can watch the game there or just go down a ways to University and 82nd to Buffalo or down the loop over there by 82nd and Milwaukee where the new Buffalo is.

#11. Wild West - Always a lot of fun. Great Country Music but they also sometimes play rap and rock music, great scenery and drinks are usually pretty cheap from what I can recall.

WRECK EM TECH!!!!!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

Triple J’s is at the top of my list…a microbrewery with great steaks. Their beer is always great

Chrome and the place next door (name escapes me)

on 19th directly across from campus’s south side. Very nice scenery at those two places for the over 25 crowd.

Student Section

As a texas fan planning on sitting in the student section, how early do yall think I will have to get in line in order to get in?

Have you been to a Tech game in the student section? I think you have to get the ducat early. Every student gets in, from my understanding. About 1/3 of the stadium is reserved for students. Anyone have more updated info on that for this fella?

by Tech92 on Oct 27, 2008 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

i wouldnt try it

Being a Texas fan in the student section is probably not the best place to be. Security will probably end up escorting you out for your own safety. Not that anyone would do anything but you will get booed until you leave. Students pay in their tuition for seating so when a non student sits in the section then you are stealing someone else’s seat who paid for it. That’s how it works at Tech. I don’t really like it because games like this make you show up early and miss part of tailgate.

Youve obviously never been to Tech before...

As of Monday night, there are already at least 100 students waiting in line to get into the stadium. But, if you wear Texas Gear, dont expect to be sitting in the student section. Opposing team’s fans always get booed out of the student section, or at least until they take off their opposing team’s shirt (guys). Every single Tech students pays a fee every year to sit in the student section, so if you want to sit there, dont make it obvious that youre from another school. Duh. If you dont want to wear Tech gear, wear something neutral, and the best way to get in is to use Tech student’s ID that isnt at the game, that looks like you. Oh, and to answer your question, i’d get there at at least noon saturday if you want a good seat.

by RedRaider621 on Oct 28, 2008 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

he’s a TTU student but a transfer/transplant from UT. He’s got the ID, he’s paid the fees, just a question of how much shit he is ready to take at the game for wearing orange.

Thanks

I actually just transferred to Tech from UT this semester and was able to go to the SMU game so Im familiar with how the ticket system works. I had just heard that there was a limit on the number of students that can get into games.

Oh. There may be, but I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I’d get there early though. For my knowledge, how does the student ticket system work these days?

When I was a student, we got individual game coupons at the beginning of the season that we would turn in for actual tickets plucked from a barrell the Thur or Fri of game week. Very high tech.

by Tech92 on Oct 27, 2008 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm pretty sure

they just scan your Tech id, now. That’s how I got in as recently as 2005 as a student.

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Oct 27, 2008 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

this is true. walk through, scan id, walk through, scan id.

by kayakyakr on Oct 27, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I am a current student

If you want to sit in the student section you cant… but if you are planning on getting in using a student ID the firemarshall cut off the students at 12000 in 2006. So if you show up 30 minutes before kickoff you won’t get in. If you show up an hour and a half before kickoff since your seat wont matter, you should be ok. Hope this helps, best of luck! but wreck em tech

Thanks for the list. I realize that it’s been 12 years since I left Lubbock, but I’m only familiar with #3 and #5. All my favorite places when I was a student are now under a strip mall or is now some commercial joint. Anyone remember Bash Riprocks, W.W. Coyote, or O-Bar? Only in college can you buy a $1.50 for a schooner of beer….

Glad to see us sharing some good info to the Horns. I have lived in Austin and Lubbock and though they are two different cities, both schools have very passionate fans. Horn fans will have a good time in Lubbock: life is a little slower, you don’t have to sit in traffic to go anywhere, and there are the friendliest people in the world there. I do agree the students are usually the rowdy group, but which schools groups aren’t.

Go Tech! Beat TU….get ready for the Red Out!!!

by WreckerRaider on Oct 27, 2008 8:45 PM CDT reply actions

Bash Riprocks still there.

For some older joints, so is The Spoon, so are both Lonestar Oyster Bars.

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Oct 27, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

The Spoon...

that takes me back. I miss J Pat’s and Bash’s. I wonder what ever happen to On Broadway or “Midnight Rodeo.” Pulled some major wool outta that place. Gotta have a giant cheese stick at Spanky’s.

by Plano Jeff on Oct 28, 2008 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I can't believe...

Bash’s didn’t make this list. Yes, I’m old and I used to bartend at Bash’s, but c’mon.. I’m not dead. If Bash’s is still there (and it is) then I can’t believe it isn’t still a major place to watch the game. Have things changed that much?

... I'm just sayin'

by antiswarm on Oct 27, 2008 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, man. It’s a pit. Not at ALL what it used to be like.

by Tech92 on Oct 28, 2008 7:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Bash’s sucks now. They bought Main Street and it’s kind of a heavy metal bar. NOBODY was in there a few weeks back. Was a little dispaointing to see it so dead. We lived in that bar when I was there. The O-bar on 34th has not changed a bit. Schooners are still dirt cheap

by Tech92 on Oct 27, 2008 9:11 PM CDT reply actions

Bash's

A little plug – My cousin’s band is playing Bash’s on Friday night. Nice chill Texas Country’ish music and cheap beers! Come one, come all – even if you are a Texas fan – we’ll show you a good time!

by PHXRDR on Oct 28, 2008 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I am a student, and as far as I know they let every student in that wants to watch the game. In 2006 I remember the record-setting crowd at the UT game, and the student section was plum full. I probably could have used an oxygen tank down there. If you get there early enough (hour and a half) with some friends, you can kind of spread out and avoid the sardine can. Who knows…GO TECH

by raidman on Oct 27, 2008 9:15 PM CDT reply actions

thanks for all the helpful info

I have no intention of being an obnoxious prick at the game, I realize that it is Tech’s student section and plan on respecting that. Is there anything I need to watch out for? I have heard a lot of bad rumors about the student section which werent necessarily true at the smu game…

by rutaj04 on Oct 27, 2008 9:32 PM CDT reply actions

I would avoid wearing orange. it’s kinda a dick move, even if you are now a TTU student? Did you finish your undergrad at UT? Time to switch loyalties ;).

seriously, though, don’t wear orange in the student section or go with a group of 10+ TTU students to vouch for you and surround you. Tech students in the south and southeast sides are pretty rough and tumble, they’ll give you shit about it and probably throw ice and whatever is at hand if you do show your true allegiance. (Not that that’s all too uncommon, i took a UT guest ticket and wore red to the 2005 game and had ice thrown at me and all kinds of shit, though it calmed down once i started chatting up football with my neighbors)

The north east side is often tamer as is the grass. you might be able to get away with wearing orange in the grass, though i haven’t seen that in a while.

by kayakyakr on Oct 27, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know the circumstances of your transfer...

but if you are a UT partisan, I don’t know why you shouldn’t be allowed to wear orange. I think you are absolutely right to be respectful in the student section of TT, but I’m of the opinion that if I can wear Raider Red in the UT section at DKR, others should be able to do the same here. I got pushed around a bit but nothing too severe, I didn’t leave with any physical scars, and I feel like the same courtesy should be extended to guests in our stadium. Expect to hear an ear-full, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be allowed to wear your team’s colors.

Now… the real reason you should be rooting for Raider Red is to support your school:)

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Oct 27, 2008 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

good advice

ive definitely found new respect for tech since coming here, but ive been bleeding burnt orange since I was four years old and wearing anything but orange is really out of the question. I do however have pride for the school from which I will graduate and can vouch for tech fans as not being the “assholes” that they are portrayed as being by Texas and aggie fans…

Good luck to you. The only place that I’ve seen a Texas Tech fan display anything but good sportsmanship and friendliness toward their opposing fans is in the stands in the student section.

by kayakyakr on Oct 27, 2008 10:19 PM CDT reply actions

oh, also a few longhorns that got booed by the students waiting to get into the stadium, plus the shit that got chunked at the UT truck.

You see lots of Texas Coaches and Athletes

At Texas Land and Cattle. The women’s soccer team was there last week as they showed up just as I was leaving. I have seen the Basketball and Baseball teams there as well.

It seems that this place is a favorite of the Texas athletic program.

by Pablo M on Oct 27, 2008 10:27 PM CDT reply actions

The food is very good

So if no one has tried it I suggest you do.

Cagles may be a stretch for the newbie to Lubbock but it would be a second pick.

Cattle Barons is not bad either.

Gardski’s would be my third choice but it is a primary Tech fan hangout!

Spanky’s is the 4th choice and its accross the street from Jones stadium.

County Line is a good choice and its on the Interstate between the Airport and Lubbock loop 289 there in Idalou.

Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant on 82nd and Indiana.

Olive Garden would be my last recomendations.

There are plenty of chain stores from Hooters, Ihop, Applebees, Cheddars, Pizza Hut, KFC, Home plate Dinner, Ohana’s, Outback Steakhouse and so forth.

But for out of towners some places are hard to find.

by Pablo M on Oct 27, 2008 10:41 PM CDT up reply actions

County Line

closed some time ago.

As a current student, I’ve never understood the fuss about Cagles. It’s ok but not great.

Las Brisas in south Lubbock is going to be the best steak house. Double Nickle is good too but Las Brisas takes the cake. It’s located where Firewater used to be.

I wait tables at Orlando’s and have to admit that I used to miss it when I would leave Lubbock for any length of time.

cagles steaks suck, but I guess for some people it is fun to be out at a “ranch”… las brisas and double nickle are much better, but if you are broke or cheap you cant beat a $10 8oz sirloin at Texas roadhouse.

Rockfish

Dang good seafood, the best in Lubbock also have pot roast, chicken and such… I would thoroughly recommend this option. It is on slide and the loop right across from south plains mall

50 Yard Line

My son graduated from Tech last spring and wanted to eat a steak at the 50 Yard Line. I was pleasantly pleased with the quality of the steaks. Lots of room for large groups. Just be sure to phone in a reservation.

What about Conference Cafe and J Pats??????

It has been 11 years since I have been back to Lubbock, but I was looking forward to going to my old stomping grounds, specifically Conference Cafe where I used to bartend. Dont tell me these are no longer around????

by HoustonTechster on Oct 28, 2008 11:41 AM CDT reply actions

Conference is still there. Its been a greek hang out since I’ve been at Tech, don’t know if that’s what it used to be. There is a J Pats on University but I it’s new (been there a year). The old one closed down some time ago so I don’t know if the new one is like the old one.

Ol J Pats

I met my wife at J Pats back in 1990, it closed down in the mid to late 90’s. There was a pizza joint there for awhile, but I’ve been gone awhile and I don’t know what is there now.

Jazz...

Is Jazz still around? I’m an “old timer” too…okay…late 80s (undergrad), early 90s (grad), but still. Of the old places, I would pick Jazz and Spanky’s for the food. The He-Man Woman Hater and fried cheese sticks at Spanky’s are legendary.

by Techsan71 on Oct 28, 2008 5:02 PM CDT reply actions

Jazz

I don’t know if its still there, but they had the best blackened chicken fettuccine ever. And good beer too. And sometimes good music. I wonder if it’s till there…

Jazz is still there…same spot…same everything.

Chimy's by far the best place on Broadway!

By far the best looking girls go to Broadway but Chimy’s usually has the best looking ones.

Best Margaritas by far are found here as well.
