Just a flea on a dog's butt

Star-divide

I was driving home in the wonderful Austin traffic and listening to 1300AM "The Zone" sports show.  It is a full time UT centered radio station.  The topic was how supremely excellent UT was and how Tech was a fraud.  Of the four hosts, one in particular kept referring to "trashcan" teams, like Missouri and Tech.  He did mention the trouble we had with Nebraska and TAM, but failed to mention TAM has beaten UT two years in a row, last year in Austin!  But they're still a trashcan team.  When one of the other hosts commented that Tech has a better defense, this guy replied that it was good enough for Tech but that Tech still didn't have a defense.  It was mentioned that we had established a running game, and this same host totally discounted it and went on about how it will be totally shut down by UTs defense.  The arrogant tirade continued until the Kansas game came up.  One host commented on how well we did against them.  The second host started off by laughing at the thought of Tech being a "big dog" program- apparently only UT is that.  He then went on to say that Tech is just a flee on a dogs ass and sometimes the big dog has to scratch it, but now Tech is a tick on a dogs ass.

That pretty much summarizes the attitude that this fanbase has toward our team, school and fans.  I hope our guys are listening to this kind of garbage and get angry.  The only way for us to correct this arrogant UT attitude is with extreme pain.

Hey Darcel, you're a flea on a dogs ass.  Hey Duncan, you are too.  Mankind, you're just a tick.  Harrell, Crabtree, all of you are just an infestation of parasites and frauds on the big dog UT Longhorns...

re: Another example of local media pawns....

I too had lived in Austin and every sports radio show there is just the same as the next one as they are all one-sided….Longhorn this, Longhorn that. Most likely that show’s sponsors are deep-pockets alums who forbid them of being professional journalists—Dallas Morning News would be another example.

Let them say what they want—they have a national championship (though I feel Johnson Community College would have won a championship if they had Vince Young). It’s the same show everywhere whether you live in Gainesville, Columbus, Ann Arbor. Hopefully our team responds! Go Tech….Beat TU.

You go CoachT.

I agree. The media here in Austin is one way-UT ONLY. But, that is the case in Lubbock, Amarillo, Houston, Dallas….anywhere. The thing that seperates Austin from the rest is the arrogant attitudes. While other places are homeys, this town simply do not RECOGNIZE ANY OTHER school, Big-12 or whatever. It is ALL Longhorns. So, when another school transgresses on THEIR soil-football, basketball, speach, band, anything- the become very put-offish and refuse to recognize the other faction as a viable one, deserving of recognition.

To be fair

1. Obviously Austin loves UT and will be one-sided here. How is this remotely a surprise?

2. There are many idiot radio/TV analysts. They don’t necessarily represent the fanbase.

3. I can assure you that most Longhorn fans who follow college football know that this won’t be an easy game. In 2002 (not 2003), you beat us in Lubbock. In 2004, we had to mount a game winning drive. In 2006, we got down 21-0 early before rallying for a close 35-31 win. It’s never easy in Lubbock for us, and we don’t expect it to be. This is how the real fanbase feels. So while it may annoy you (as it seems to annoy other Tech fans in other forums I’ve seen) that Mack Brown and company don’t talk trash about Tech, therefore robbing the Red Raiders of the “underdog” and “no-respect” card, it’s not just coachspeak. We really do know that we can lose this Saturday if we don’t bring our best.

being fair

1. Yes, I expect a little homerism from the local radio show, however, these purported analysts were ignoring the strengths of the Tech team and falling back in to the position that UT is unbeatable and that all their opponents are “trashcan” teams. Whatever that means? Unfortunately, if all you play are trashcan teams, then what does that make of you?

2. I also wanted to point out that it’s hard to make that claim when your team lost to TAM two years in a row, once at home! That’s got to be embarrassing for UT fans..

Oh, it is

Many consider last year’s horrible showing against that terrible Aggie team as perhaps the low point of Mack Brown’s tenure, lower than the drubbings he’s received at the hands of Oklahoma. At the very least, it sparked something in Brown, who changed practices up, made key hires (Muschamp and Applewhite), and generally came in with a different approach. The results are that we are by far surpassing any expectation people had of us this year. He’s gone from what was perhaps his worst coaching job last year to his arguably his best this year.

It’s not excusable, but it happens, and I’m glad it seems Brown learned from it.

To Be Fair, Part 2

I like that you address the players in your post. As if Crabtree is going to take time off from a schedule of class, practice, and getting poon to read whatever you have to say.

Seriously though… It’s a good matchup. People that are discounting Tech are just homers, and most UT enthusiasts that think before we talk know that. I don’t believe that the Texas D is going to be able to be able to keep you out of the endzone in any consistent way, and I’m not sold that the Tech D can do any better than OU, Mizzou, or freakin’ Arkansas against that UT offense.

Key variables are:

1) Turnovers / Momentum – If Tech F’s up early, all of your hype is going to turn the other way, stadium goes dead, etc. If you get a pick six, the team and stadium will ride that for a while.
2) Conditioning for Tech’s defense, who will be on the field 38+ minutes of clock. You won’t win if Horns score on their last six possessions, like last year.

Of good commentary, I think that for the first year, TTU can match UT’s depth on d-line. Ra’jon Henely coming back will help a lot.

Am I missing something? Why would a local sports station not be on board with the team they have to most listeners for…and probably root for? Don’t see the big deal in this at ALL.

by Tech92 on Oct 28, 2008 5:57 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I see your point, but.....

I don’t think the arrogance is limited to just local sports station homers……and reversely, the arrogance does not include the real UT fanbase. The problem is that the real UT fanbase is a mere fraction of the overall fanbase, the rest of which we all like to refer to as the “T-Shirt Fanbase.” That is, tacky Texans from all over who just think its cool to wear burnt orange, talk trash to everyone else and have no other collegiate affiliation, so they just cling on to the latest trend.

You see it everywhere in Texas…..a truck driving down the road with a sticker of Calvin pissing on an A&M logo, etc…..Most of these folks are college football’s equivalent of the majority of Yankees fans in baseball….they’ll be the first to tell you your football team is going to lose to UT by 50, but if you ask them to name 5 players on the Texas defense they’ll get really angry and ask how many heisman winner’s have come from “your school,” even though they have never been associated in any way with the University of Texas. Except that really tacky burnt orange zubaz T-shirt they bought at their local Walmart.

I have a buddy who works overseas with me, since we’re both from Texas we’re pretty much best friends….except that it drives me absolutely crazy that he fits into this bandwagon shell. When I first met him, he had a burnt orange shirt for every day of the week. He was always bragging about UT’s last huge win (although I know he never watched any because they were on at 2:00a.m. here in Japan and he was always asleep.) So finally, it pissed me off so much that one of my buddies could be this faddish, I had to ask:

Did you go to UT? NO
Are you from Austin? HOUSTON
Do you even know the name of UT’s football stadium? BLANK STARE, SILENCE, and then he told me the next day, and supplemented his vast knowledge of everything UT by informing me that it was named after a “former coach.”

Everyone knows a UT “T-shirt fan.” Especially UT’s real fanbase, whom I assume are probably the most annoyed by these homer types.

College football is unique that way, I think. I’m not sure the same phenomenon exists with college basketball, though I could be wrong.

It’s the same in California. When I lived out there in the late 90s, everyone was on the USC tip. Even guys who I knew went to Cal or San Diego State were all into USC football. And this was even before USC went on the tear that they’re winding down with. But they aren’t NEARLY as passionate about team sports on that side of the country as we are. Partly because of all the cool crap to do out there, partly because by nature, they’re relatively live-and-let-live, semi-passive people.

I don't think...

anyone expects the home team radio station not to be homers. The point is, how enjoyable would it be to listen to your radio talk show people who refuse to even see reality? You see, it is a spectrum. On DoubleTNation we expect Seth to really be worried about every opponent and to build up marginal teams and talk down expectations. We expect you to run around running interference for the other teams fans. We expect that. Why would I want to go to a blog or listen to a radio show where the hosts were just stupid homers all the time with no dose of reality?

... I'm just sayin'

Point taken…and I only run interference because the other guys have been so cool with me on their sites, which I contribute to quite a bit. Just returning the favor.

I’m a nervous dude so being worried comes naturally. It’s not a bit.
