Conservative

I am all for the careful expectations for this game, but I think this prediction is a far too conservative. While our defense is still highly questionable after uneven performances against less than stellar competition, Kansas State’s defense is downright horrid.

You can rationalize giving up 265 yards passsing to Nevada, because they are throwing team that runs an unconventional offense, and has a QB that you can reasonably imagine being a backup in the NFL.

But, how can you justify a Kansas State defense that gave up 500 + yards to – not Louisiana State University – but to the Ragin Cajuns that are Louisiana Lafayette!

I think we are looking at Louisville-like performance against KSU. We should score over 40 points – after 4 weeks of adjustments and working out the kinks, I expect us to be crisp and explosive, even on the road.

I think our defense will continue to be shaky and will likely give up a big play or two. Freeman is a talented runner/passer type that we’ve struggled with in the past (see Chase Daniels), and they have some deep threat receivers.

-Our offense is better than their defense by a wide margin.
-Our defense will make us cringe a few times, but overall will hold their own.
- Our Coach is far superior to Prince (I’d like to think we’ve been holding back quite a bit over the past four weeks)
- Harrell has to keep his head, play within himself, stop trying for the homerun on every play. (The deep ball probably is open on film more often than not, but , like a three-pointer in basketball, it’s also a lower percentage opportunity – so let’s hope he picks his spots wisely).
-Our receivers need to run their routes and hold on to the football.

This game will be over in the third quarter:

I have to agree with.....

Londonraider has this one pegged (IMHO) so scroll up and and read his comment, but give me the credit because I was the one who was gonna think of it. Eventually. But blame him and not me if we’re wrong.

Tech Explodes onto the Conference Scene

Tech 49 KSU 17 (scoring last TD when Tech calls the dogs off)

Harrell Offensive MVP

Dixon/All 3 LBs Defensive MVP

Game will be close the first quarter, then Harrell & Co. bust out a can of Air Rations on KSU. Their defense won’t get a break till halftime. We will see some Dwayne Slay moments on Freeman by McBloodbath, and I foresee Freeman throwing 2-3 INTs. I will prob. take a nap during the 4th quarter.

by ST04 on Oct 3, 2008 9:45 AM CDT   0 recs

Freeman

I will personally slather my computer in bbq sauce and eat it if we see a Slay-like hit on Freeman. Tech is going to kill us, but I highly doubt a 6’6", 250 lb. quarterback is going to get “Slayn.”

We'll carry the banner high!

by TB on Oct 3, 2008 10:43 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, we don’t have a hit machine like Slay on this squad so we porbably won’t have a reply of that anhillation. But I’ve seen big guys get drilled and driven down. He’s a big kid, no doubt about that. And will play on Sunday…but I’m guessing he’d give up a highlight hit if it meant a victory. Which it won’t : )

That is what Abilene High did to Ft. Worth Paschal last night. I will take that as an omen and predict the same for Tech.

prediction

Tech – 56
KSU – 17

I expect the defense to play solid. Look for 2 ints and that many forced fumbles as well. I think the Tech run game will be very stong and then look for the pass game to open up as the KSU secondary is stepped up to stop the run. I could be completely wrong, but thats what Id like to see at least.

by raiderred on Oct 3, 2008 3:01 PM CDT   0 recs

runny

anyone think we will get over 200 yards running….or under 100 yards this game?

by texastfan on Oct 3, 2008 3:06 PM CDT   0 recs

between 150 and 200 yards if Kansas State is able to slow the air raid in any way. If the air raid is firing on on cylinders, closer to 100.

by kayakyakr on Oct 3, 2008 4:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Right around 100. Though I respect Josh Freeman’s abilities, I have zero fear of the KState defense. I have a feeling this is the game where it all comes together for the offense. Probably close to 500 yds passing and at least 5 passing TDs…a few short TD runs thrown in for good measure. The Wildcats will score a few points early to keep it interesting until the half, but Tech will do it’s normal third qtr explosion to put it out of reach. I am hoping we get some quality time for Taylor Potts or even Louks/Sheffield.

by Tech92 on Oct 3, 2008 4:47 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

runny

if the run is not being stopped, I would expect Woods and Batch to both have over 100 yards on the ground, each.

by raiderred on Oct 3, 2008 3:11 PM CDT   0 recs

If Tech wins 35-31 (or worse) tomorrow, it’s going to be a very long season.

by boar_amour on Oct 3, 2008 4:26 PM CDT   0 recs

The reason

for my less than stellar prediction is that I think I read somewhere (can’t remember now) that Texas Tech was 1-6 on the road against the spread in Big 12 games. Considering the offense has struggled a bit and KSU is going to be going crazy, I just see this game being closer than I would really like.

Go Raiders . . .

by Seth C on Oct 3, 2008 4:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yea ok...

but wouldn’t you put KSU in the ranks of a baylor or smu or Iowa state road game this year….looking at what they have done this far doesn’t scare me a whole lot….there is some room to fear them when looking at that qb…we have always…always had a tuff time in keepling containment on running qbs….

by texastfan on Oct 3, 2008 5:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm not that optimistic...

…but do you really think K-State is as bad or worse than Baylor, SMU, or Iowa State? We’re terrible on defense, but at least we have an offense.

We'll carry the banner high!

by TB on Oct 3, 2008 5:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

no

no i don’t think they are that bad…i do respect KSU but they are not a good squad this year…not a horible baylor…isu but not a good osu….kinda like an A&M they will beat someone there not supposed to but i don’t believe it will be tech this week

by texastfan on Oct 3, 2008 7:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

wins this year

i do have a question though….how many conference wins do you expect at this time for KSU..

by texastfan on Oct 3, 2008 8:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Conference wins

Two, maybe three if we’re lucky. We have four conference games that we have a realistic chance at: @ A&M, @ CU, Nebraska and Iowa State. We need to get two of those. If we could get three of those, and maybe steal a game somewhere else, that would be a huge accomplishment given how bad our defense looks right now. But when I look at our schedule, I don’t see a lot of games we can steal. We play Tech, OU and A&M out of the South, and we’re on the road to KU and Missouri.

And as for what you said in the other comment, you’re absolutely right that we’re not a good team this year and you’re absolutely right that we probably will not be able to beat Tech this weekend.

We'll carry the banner high!

No offense taken

We all are fully aware of our team’s deficiencies. It’s a valid question how many games we’ll win the rest of the season. It might be zero for all I know.

Breakdown

Tech 55 KSU 16

Tech 230 on the ground KSU 73 Yards on the ground
Tech 423 passing KSU 248 Passing
Turnovers Tech +3

Special Teams. 1 Punt or Kick off return for Tech or have one get damn close to it.

KSU stinks! They have not impressed anywere! North Texas or Montana State are not powerhouses! Both are bottom of the barrel teams.

KSU turns the ball over and even North Texas State as bad as they are rushed for more than 100 on the ground! The only team not to put lots of yards on the ground was Montana State who is really a stinker.

Tech wins on the road very impressively as long as the players do not show up with heads too big for their britches or helmets.

by Pablo M on Oct 3, 2008 4:55 PM CDT   0 recs

If we only score 16 points on your defense...

…I will jump off the stadium tomorrow.

wow

lol….16…are you saying that KSU is not better than nevada?

by texastfan on Oct 3, 2008 7:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

KSU is probably better, but I don’t think they get more than 20 tomorrow. But if that team shows up just looking for a moral victory like it seems some KSU fans are, the game is over already ; )

by Tech92 on Oct 3, 2008 8:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Moral victories

That’s us as fans talking. I’m guessing (hoping) our players are looking at this game with every expectation of winning.

You’re entitled to your opinion, but I’m just going to note that K-State is averaging 47 points per game on the year. Against Louisville, which is a fairly solid defensive club, we managed 29 points. Just sayin’.

We'll carry the banner high!

by TB on Oct 4, 2008 12:09 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Leach better motivate our team

Well, I see a lot of overly optimistic fans, but let’s be realistic here. On paper, yes, Tech is a far superior team. However, they have always played uncharacteristically bad on an October road game almost every year:

2002: Iowa State, L31-17 (however, Iowa State was a good team back then)
2003: Missouri, L62-31
2004: No bad road games for October, a lucky year (of note: last road game vs KState)
2005: Texas, L52-17 (could also pick Baylor, where we only led 6-0 in the early 4th quarter)
2006: Colorado, L30-6
2007: Missouri, L41-10

If Tech will lose the road game they shouldn’t have this year, it will be KState. A&M is too mediocore to do it, and Tech’s other road contests are against good competition.

Hopefully I am wrong, and this TTU squad really is different from the rest and they blow KState out of the water, but we are coming off a bye week where our previous week was against an FCS cupcake.

My prediction:
Tech digs themself in a hole the first half, Graham throws at least 2 INT’s, Tech secondary gets burned a couple times.
Second half, Graham shakes the rust off, the D steps up and makes some big plays, and Tech begins to make a come back.

Final score: TTU, 41-38 (OT) .

K-State Game Plan

I think KSU will favor the run on offense in the first half. A couple of the comments have indicated that they are more afraid of the Tech offense than the Tech defense. I expect them to follow the typical philosophy that teams have used against tech over the past few years – control the clock, force the underneath pass.

I think McNeil will start out similarly. Force KSU to beat them with the running game.

People are expecting a high scoring affair, but I’ll take the under on that. Tech will exploit the run defense early and when KSU loads the box go deep to Crabtree. KSU will hang in during a low scoring 1st half (14-10 TT @ halftime) . Tech will score quickly in the 3rd, KSU will get nervous and go to the pass. Tech will grab one INT for a quick score, and another one the ground late in the game. KSU picks up a TDs after the game is put away, making it look a little more respectable, even though Tech dominates.

TT 35-24.

This will be the shortest game Tech plays all year.

by NM99 on Oct 4, 2008 9:47 AM CDT   0 recs

Leach did prepare his team

Ok, so I was wrong, thank goodness. Looks like all the media pundits predicting a shootout or a possible upset were wrong (Lee Corso comes to mind). I am impressed with how sharp Harrell was, and how well Leach prepared the team. This Tech squad is definitely different from the rest, if they keep up that intensity and effort every game, then they do have a legitamate shot to beat OU and UT and win the Big XII.
