Prediction Time: Texas vs. Texas Tech

vs.
vs.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders (8-0, 4-0)
Weather: Lubbock, Texas
- Synopsis of the game: Texas comes out ready to play, but the Red Raiders battle back, behind a raucous Jones Stadium crowd. Crabtree has his 5th two touchdown game in a row, while Baron Batch keeps the Red Raiders grounded. Tramain Swindall absolutely breaks out Saturday night. Daniel Charbonnet and Darcel McBath have got to make Shipley and Cosby pay for going over the middle, while Brandon Williams garners 2 sacks. The difference is a field goal by Lynnwood.
- Offensive MVP: Tramain Swindall
- Defensive MVP: Brandon Williams
- Final Score: Texas Tech 45, Texas 42
- One Time Only, Seth C's Friday Embarrassing Admission: First, I admit that I'm totally stealing this bit from the tremendous Alabama blog, Roll Bama Roll, but if there's a game that I feel like we might need it, this is it. So, without further ado, I give to you my attempt to curry favor with the football gods by admitting cultural, and intellectual flaws in a very public manner . . . after the jump.

If I could offer a reasonable explanation for this I would, but, well . . . obviously, there is no reasonable explanation. You can ask my wife, but whenever this song comes up on the iPod random mode, it's me singing at the top of my lungs.
For the rest of you, offer up your embarrassing admission and remember, it's for a win dammit.

1. Synopsis of the game: Tech sets the offensive tempo, scoring touchdowns on 4 of their first 6 drives. Texas is fighting hard to keep up. The D line gets pressure on McCoy, forcing him to do things he’s not used to. The Jones is rough and rowdy, causing UT to kick a field goal their first drive that comes back to haunt them.
2. Offensive MVP: Graham Harrell
3. Defensive MVP: Darcel McBath
4. Final Score: Texas Tech 49, Texas 45
5. One Time Only. Embarrassing Admission: One time, my friend’s mom called and left a message on my phone’s answering machine. I heard the words “election” and “support” so I picked up the phone and shouted “we don’t care” and hung up. Then I realized that it wasn’t a telemarketer.

1. Synopsis of the game: Texas, with its tank empty from the previous 3 weeks, starts out strong but by half time, Tech has it figured out and has a day in Texas’ secondary.
2. Offensive MVP: Harrell
3. Defensive MVP: Mc Bath
4. Final Score: Tech 48, A University in Texas 21
5. One Time Only. Embarrassing Admission: My junior year at Tech, I totally ruined my sweats, and a bathroom stall in Coleman Hall, after my first 6 mile run with the ROTC Ranger Challenge team.

- Synopsis of the game: Tech gets out early but misses on 2 drives in the 2nd quarter allowing UT to get it close again. 1 red zone stand for TTU is the difference in this game.
- Offensive MVP: Detron Lewis
- Defensive MVP: McKinner Dixon
- Final Score: Texas Tech 48, Texas 45
- One Time Only. Embarrassing Admission: I too have a taste for awful music. In this case, it’s chick-rock. Alanis Morisette, Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton. Speaking of, just saw Missy Higgins open for Ben Folds and she was pretty good.

1. Low scoring, close game through the first half. Texas trades a FG for a TD in the 3rd and Tech never looks back.
2. Crabtree
3. Whitlock
4. Tech 38, Texas 34
5. To appease the football gods – Sitting behind the Texas bench at Tech-Texas game in ‘98. Once the tortillas were too fragile to throw as frisbees, I started wadding them up as balls of dough for use as ammo. I bounced a couple off of Ricky Williams’s helmet before a friend brought me to my senses. There, I’ve confessed.

1. Synopsis of the game: Game is close in the first half with Tech trailing by a field goal. Tech turns it on in the second half like past games as Texas runs out of steam.
2. Offensive MVP: Batch
3. Defensive MVP: Mc Bath
4. Final Score: Tech 49, UT 31
5. One Time Only. Saw Ryan Adams a couple of weeks ago in Houston for about the 10th time. First 9 times I was standing by the stage with the kids. First Time Pics
1. Synopsis of the game: Both teams come out tight and the first quarter ends 0-0. Then all hell explodes. Tech will give up some sacks with the wide spreads but will hit some big screen passes to offset the agressive UT pass rush. Colt will get his, but crucial turnovers will be the difference.
2. Offensive MVP: Michael Crabtree (if only as a decoy to get everyone else off)
3. Defensive MVP: Dixon (2 sacks at crucial times)
4. Final Score: Halftime: Tech 21 Texas 17. Game: Tech 45 Texas 37.

1. Synopsis of the game: Starts off like it did in 06 with Tech jumping out 21-0 in the first. Texas rallies back in the second quarter to bring it to a 7 point game at halftime 28-21. Tech comes out with it foot on the gas pedal in the second half scoring on 5 out of 5 drives with one being a FG by Williams. Crabtree puts up some crazy stats including 3 TD’s. Adam James/Hale Storm, Morris, and Britton all get TD’s along with a few on the ground by Batch and Woods. Texas can’t up with us and the Tech DLine tees off on McCoy and Tech wins 59-48.
2. OMVP: Crabtree/Harrell
3. DMVP: McBloodbath with 2ints. Dixon with 2 sacks. That end the second half comeback by UT.
4 Score at Halftime: Tech 28 Texas 21. Final Score: Tech 59 Texas 48

2. OMVP: Harrell 400 yds passing
3. DMVP: Dixon 2 sacks 1 fumble recovery

Score Predictions Where Tech Kicks a Field Goal Are Not Valid
It’s great to go back and forth between here and BON because it makes you realize how relative everything is. Horns call the game like a mirror image of what I’m reading here. Man this is going to be a good game…
Anyways, I don’t think you guys are going to make a field goal. There are very few circumstances where I could see Leach trying a FG in the first place. If he has 4th and less than five from anywhere, he’ll probably go for it. The only time I can see him kicking is if you have it on the Horns 10, but then get sacked twice in a row. Not a high percentage situation for a kicking team that I’m sure anyone would admit is not that great.
I know that you guys love your defense after this week, but to loosely paraphrase Iverson: “We’re talkin bout KANSAS.” For every time McBath picked off that hobbit Reesing, he also got burned. I also think that your defenders will be worn out by the 4th quarter- and that’s not their fault, it’s just the nature of your offensive system that you don’t hold the ball for long, one way or the other. Trying to chase Colt and eveyone else for 70 plays wears the legs, I don’t care who you are.
So here’s Tack’s call: Texas punts twice, Colt turns it over once. Leach turns it over twice on 4th down, Tech punts once. Final: 42-41, because your 12th man fucks up an XP, letting Texas cash in the last score to go ahead instead of tie.

Whew...
This is such a tough game to call. But I’m picking Tech for the following reasons:
1. I think the players will be able put the Biggest-Game-in-Tech-History aside and just play their game.
2. Our offense is every bit the equal of Texas’ – and much deeper at WR vs. the Texas inexperience in the secondary.
3. Frankly, we’re due. It’s been five in a row and 8 out of 9, I believe. I think the odds are just on our side to eke one out this time.
Final: Texas 40 Texas Tech 45
And it has been a blast going back and forth with the guys over at BON this week. Great fans who know a ton about football. For everyone fortunate enough to be making the trip to the South Plains: be cool to the Horn fans, be safe, be loud.

We are DUE!!!!!!!!!
Tech jumps out early and Texas keeps trying but we keep a 2 TD edge.
OMVP- Crabtree with a little help from Adam James( he’s a beast!!!!!!)
DMVP- Mckinner Dixon( I think he may have come back just for this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Half-time: TECH 28 Texas 14
Final: TECH 49 Texas 42 ( late TD to get close)
After all these years we finally win a really big one. Tech proved alot in beating OU last year and I think the dramatic Bowl wins help tremendously .

OMVP: Harrell 412 Yards passing

One for the gods
1. Tech come out ON FIRE! UT only gets field goals in the first Quarter while TECH gets TDs on every possession. Second Quarter Tech offense continues to roll While UT get on track and scores a TD once before a Interception stops and drive. Second half is trading TDs .
2. OMVP Harrell 520 Yards and Reed for shutting down whats his name… Orakpo
3. DMVP The whole unit for shutting down the McCoy Boys.
4. Tech 56 Tex 41

1. Synopsis of the game: Colt is Colt during the first half and the scoreboard reflects this, but Harrell bounces back from an early pick and a few tough hits instead of going into a funk. Touchdowns for everyone, but 2nd half adjustments for the Tech D that get pressure on McCoy keep us in it and we win on a heroic last minute drive that puts us in field goal range and Lynnwood ices it. That or we win by a touchdown because of a sketchy pass-interference call that will have Barking Carnival in conniptions for the next half-decade.
2. Offensive MVP: Graham “Apparently operating at Chase Daniels-levels of douchebaggery according to other Big XII fans” Harrell
3. Defensive MVP: McKinner Dixon
4. Final Score: Texas Tech: 52 Texas: 49

- Synopsis of the Game: Tech leads 14-7 after one quarter and 24-21 at the half. The Second-Half Defense shows up for Tech, limiting the Horns to 10 second-half points. Harrell and Crabtree get their stats, but Baron Batch and McKinner Dixon carry the team to victory.
- Offensive MVP: Baron Batch
- Defensive MVP: McKinner Dixon
- Final Score: 45-31, Tech
- One Time Only, Friday Embarrassing Admission: Since liking the Gilmore Girls is taken, um, I use “superstition” as an excuse for OCD. “Did you just change shirts because you think that one is lucky?” “Yep.” Not really, though; it’s because today is a green-shirt day.

Well I want to win bad enough to follow Seth's lead
1. Synopsis of the game: We trade TDs like with KU and KSU, but we get a stop and hold ‘em to a field goal befor half. We get a stop 2nd half open and score, thus forcing them to take chances. I think a LB makes one of them fumble after catching somewhere in the mix.
2. Offensive MVP: If it’s Barron Batch, we win. Or Shannon Wodds for 3 1 yard TDs.
3. Defensive MVP: Linebackers and safeties
4. Final Score: reverse last year, something like UT 43, TECH 59
5. One Time Only Embarrassing Admission: I tell everyone that there’s vag-rock on my ipod because my wife and I have the same ipod account, but I really do like some of the Lisa Leob, Sarah McLauchlan, Liz Phair, Dixie Chicks stuff from her 90’s wheelhouse collection. With all of these one-time-only embarassing admissions
Maybe you guys would have fit in better in Austin…
Seriously though- unless your defense falls on its face and lets Texas score every three or four plays, you probably won’t have enough possessions to put up 56+ pts (unless you honestly plan on scoring a TD every single drive).
I want to know where this boundless optimism springs from, though- I admittedly have not watched Tech as much this year, because I finally got season tix for the Horns and have been therefore on the road most weekends. So the question:
What is your defense going to do that is better than OU, OSU, and Mizzou? Because to win, you will eventually need to keep UT out of the endzone on at least one possession….. Educate me, I am but an ignorant Horns fan. I have read a million postings about Harrell vs. Orakpo, but there’s hardly anything out there about the other part of the game that happens between Tech possessions.

OSU held UT to 28 points. Maybe TTU does that, maybe the don’t. I’ve picked UT to score 45, the same that OU gave up. TTU’s defense is a bit better than OU’s at this point, but UT’s offense is also better right now than it was in the Cotton Bowl.
KU and UT operate in similar ways with the mobile QB and a running game that is waiting to get moving. UT’s better, but it’s the same concept.
blah blah blah. I think it’ll be a good game.
then again, with all the hype, it’ll probably be a blowout in either direction.

Common opponents.
What is your defense going to do that is better than OU, OSU, and Mizzou?
OU, like Texas Tech, has played Kansas and Kansas State. Against Texas Tech those teams scored 21 and 28 points. Against OU those teams scored 31 and 35. Against Tech, Kansas had 315 yards. Against Oklahoma, Kansas had 491 yards. Against Tech, Kansas State had 296 yards. Against Oklahoma, Kansas State had 550 yards.
OSU, like Texas Tech, has played Texas A&M. Aggies scored 28 against Oklahoma State. Aggies scored 25 against Tech. Aggies had 402 yards against OSU. Aggies had 306 yards against Tech.
Missouri, like Texas Tech, has played Nevada and Nebrarska. Nevada scored 17 against Missouri and 19 against Tech. Nevada had 362 yards against Missouri and 488 against Tech. Nebraska scored 31 against Tech and 17 against Missouri. Nebraska had 471 yards against Tech and only 369 against Missouri.
In sum, we’ve played better defense against common opponents than either Oklahoma State or Oklahoma, but worse than Missouri. Against a pretty soft schedule, Tech is 2nd in the Big 12 in scoring defense. Texas Tech is 3rd in Big 12 in total defense.
My opinion of Tech defense, having watched every game that has been televised and having followed closely online every game that hasn’t, is we are Jekyll and Hyde. We’ve put together great entire games (Kansas) horrible entire games (Nebraska) and split the baby (Texas A&M).

2. OMVP Beast Batch.
3. DMVP Dixon.

Addition:
Worst day at the Jones: I was sixteen and watched Rodney Allison throw an interception to end an undefeated season. That was 1976 and I can still see it.
Best day at the Jones: “Same day” to quote a movie.
Best memory against the Horns: Ted Watts inteception return for TD, 1980. Please Raiders give me a new one.
