Post Game Thread: Texas Tech vs. Kansas State

I've got to be out of pocket for a while, so no report card until tomorrow morning.  I was completely wrong, and happy to be wrong.

Give me your Offensive MVP not named Harrell/Crabtree and your Defensive MVP.

Texas Tech defeated Kansas State 58-28 and OU whipped up on Baylor 49-17.

I had one quick thought about the 2 tight end set, which you guys probably have already figured out, but it seems that the times that Texas Tech ran this set, they were intent on creating single coverage on the side of the field opposite of the strong side of the field (where the 2 tight ends lined up).  Noticed this on 1 of Leong's TD's and where A. James almost scored.

Any thoughts on the game appreciated.

He picked Tech as the most probably upset, and repeated adamantly (at least 4 times) that Tech had played NOBODY. NOBODY I SAY. NOBODY.

He said both Tech and KSU had played Nobody, but since Kansas State was at home, he picked them over Tech.

tied to balloons! Thought hit me while watching Nebraska Mizzou. They released red balloons (99?) after a score.

Defense

The defensive line did a very nice job of getting pressure on the QB. I’m a bit concerned that our corners don’t appear to be very good at all, and this will be a problem against Kansas, OSU, UT and OU. Those teams should be able to handle our pass rush pretty easily if we decide not to blitz.

Our second team offense and defense are clearly second team for a reason. Wow, do they all look shaky.

The offense really looked like what we all expected out of these guys this year. Very, very impressive all across the board on offense.

Special teams need to ride the short bus home because they played like they were ‘special.’ I know you have to give your kicker a chance to work through things, but I think Carona has ridden as far as he can go. His kickoffs, even with the 20 mph wind, were abysmal. A few sidewinders that are hard to do even if you try. The punt block looked to me like a lack of effort on the part of the line.

Bottom line is this was a great win against a team with a winning record. Some flaws were shown, but if McNeil can scheme to protect the corners, we’ll be okay. It looks like there will only be four tough games this year (Kansas, OSU, UT and OU). That’s probably par for the course. Nebraska, so far, looks pretty average tonight so that should be another win next week.

Harrell…what can you say. He looked fantastic. Crabtree and the rest of the WRs were lights out. The RBs were great when given the chance, as well. Batch is a powerful runner and Woods looked like the Woods of old.

That was pretty fun to watch.

Tech is Awsome

I was busy with a baby shower-manning popcorn machine, taking photos-but did get to see some of the game. Could not hear much, but from what I heard of Corso’s remarks, I did not miss anything there. Corso has run the course as far as I care. I saw & heard him saying Tech was ripe for an upset special, his main pick for one, as a matter of fact. GET RID OF HIM, NOW! And while you are at it, get rid of Lou Holtz. What a farce.

Except for a couple of gimme TDs, KState did little to scare Tech. The defense was great. KState is going to get something, they have some good athletes, but they are nowhere close to Tech. I think Tech was the most impressive team of the tube today/tonite.

The Tech offense is hitting on all cylinders. All without really going for Loooonnnggg bombs. With the run & pass splitting time, no team is going to key on any aspect of Tech’s game. All the receivers are spot-on. Graham-almost perfect. I do still feel they have only cracked the play book, “O” & “D”. Be ready for a great ride.

There were a few things they need to address.

1) Corona. Get a shrink, anything. He definately has talent, but may have been expected to too much too soon.
2) LaCour, ot the offensive line…take each attempt SERIOUSLY.
3) DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GET A FIRST DOWN FROM YOUR OWN 30 ON FOURTH DOWN, ESPECIALLY ON THE ROAD!!!!! Leach needs to stop being so bold and know when to give it up, then just reload on the next possession. He can REALLY trust this defense.

OK. I’ll stop. All in all, this team still excites me and I feel it is going to accomplish a special thing this year. Just keep on keeping on. GUNS UP!
And by the way—-CoachT predicted a loss—-eat your words, “T”.

Offensive MVP not named Harrell or Crabtree: Lyle Leong
Defensive MVP without any numbers: the whole D-Line.

i think that Carona’s problems are all correctable with coaching

by kayakyakr on Oct 4, 2008 11:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah but when?

we’re in conference play, coaches!

If I’m not mistaken, last year Trilica admitted that the only relevant coaching he got on kicking technique came/comes from private coache. He said special teams coaches can help scheme and plan, but none of them actually know how to kick or can teach kicking. We don’t have a “kicking” coach, I don’t think. This is something Carona will have to fix on his own.

4th down on the 30

Leach needs to go wide or long on these 4th down tries. A 70 yd bomb to Crab would keep them from crowding the line.
