I think OSU is a good team, but no way are they top 10 at this point. Maybe 16-17. I think they beat A&M as much with smoke and mirrors as offense this week – that and the Aggies are really THAT bad. But I do think they are a team to be worried about by the time we play them in a few weeks.

by Tech92 on Oct 6, 2008 3:17 PM CDT   0 recs

Yeaaaaaa.......

So i agree with about the top… 5… partially. And, i definitely wouldn’t put KU that high, and at least not above Southern Florida, whom they lost to. I understand ranking the bix xii high, and at least tech, but really… Oklahoma state #8?… Theyre

1: OU

2: Mizzou

3: Alabama (#3 only because they had a tough time with Kentucky)

4: Texas (They have looked pretty good so far this year, Saturday will be their big test)

5: LSU (i would put them where bama is, but they didnt look as good against Miss. St)

6: Penn St.

7: BYU

8: Tx Tech (I still think tech will only deserve this spot is if they demolish Nebraska)

9: USC

10: Georgia

11: Utah (Theyre in a weak conference, but they beat Michigan in the big house, which Wisconsin couldn’t even do at home)

12: Florida (Should be an interesting game this weekend against LSU)

13: Vanderbilt (The convincing defeat of Auburn makes this team look promising)

14: Boise State (My favorite game of all time is the 06-07 Fiesta Bowl against OU)

15: Ohio State (I’m not totally convinced this team is really that good, they lost to USC, and had a tough time winning at Wisconsin)

16: Oklahoma State (I actually think the Ok. State game will be much more difficult than the Nebraska game for Tech this year)

17: Virginia Tech

18: South Florida

19: Kansas

20: Wisconsin ( I dont care if they lost to Ohio St., they kept it close)

21: Wake Forest

22: Cal

23: Michigan State

24: Auburn

25: North Carolina

In the case of Boise State, Utah, and Fresno State, they all good teams, but in weak conferences…. and they are all prime examples of why there should be a playoff system instead of the bowl system. There can still be playoff games in those bowl cities… they can still get their revenue… and it will be more fair for the teams involved. Boise State was the only undefeated team after the 2006 season… yet they were # 5?! Also, it sucks for good conferences, like the SEC and Big XII, that have a lot of good schools in their conference, that they cant have more than 2 schools in BCS games. Last year Mizzou didnt get to go to a BCS bowl because they were 10-2 (2 OU losses) but kansas was 10-1, and their 1 loss was to Mizzou!!! Yet, Kansas went to a BCS bowl… Kansas won, yes, but Mizzou should have gone to one also. Now, this year, the Big XII has a lot of good teams, currently 4 in the top 7, yet only 2 can go to BCS bowl games, when they all deserve to. Only 1 can come out undefeated, yes, but just becasue a team is #3 in a conference doesnt mean they out right are horrible, and do not deserve a BCS bowl bid, they could just be in a great conference with a lot of good teams. Sorry for ranting, but i just hate the bowl system.

I don’t think Georgia is top 10 this year. Paper lions.

Time for seriousness

As much as my top 25 has brought some raised eyebrows lets look at it realistically.

Oklahoma State first and for most. Do I think that they will finish the season in the BCS where I have them now? Absolutely not!

But power in Season at the end of week 6 they are a top 10 team. I do not see a Florida, Georgia or even Ohio State winning against Oklahoma State if they played them in say week 6. You would see them crush those teams as they are not the powerhouses of past years. Thus perception is clouding your collective jugements.

BYU is not better than our Red Raiders. All who think that are sadly out of tune or lost a few nuts and bolts somewhere.

Alabama showed why they are not the best in the SEC after last Saturday. LSU even though had a poor showing against Miss State has the tools which lethal against Alabama. Thus you will see LSU win this Saturday rather impressively. Alabama although is a good team, I just do not think they are at the level of even Missouri. Texas is a stretch and It would be close to see if they could beat Texas. They would also struggle against Our Red Raiders. The only thing that tempers me is that you can not have too many top teams from the same division as 1 through 4.

The Big 12 south is absolutely the toughest place to play in the nation. And this year is proving what has been known for the last 3 years. The best of the SEC can not really hang and would be like Baylor or Texas A&M if they had to face the Big 12 south year in or year out. That is a bit of real truth.

When you can have Vanderbilt beat up teams like they have done as average as they have been, then it makes my argument all that much stronger.

Even USC would struggle against OKlahoma State. Hell most school would loose to Oklahoma State in the country. The reality is that within the Big 12, we know exactly what is Oklahoma state. It is why they normally lose to Oklahoma and Texas and should have lost to us last year.

But they are much improved just as we are much improved. That is a game that Tech can not look past. it will be a game settled by 7 or less points. It will be the defense who can stop the other’s offense.

But seriously, consider who the teams are and what their current record is and how well they actually have played.

Most people over look Ball State. They are very good even though they are in the MAC. But they will be the best in the MAC. Only Western Michigan has a shot at taking them down with the season final game. The rest of the teams are average but Ball State is the real deal. I actually believe that Ball State can take Boise State. But how many of the fans here have seen Ball State play this season and just ignored them because of perception and the fact that they are in the MAC. They are good enough to be a top 15. They crushed Northwestern, Navy and Akron which all three are not that bad! Northwestern by the way is considered a top 25 team and they were totally crushed manhandled and abused by Ball State. Ball State by the way is 6-0.

I through out perception and go on performance. Performance is the week to week showing of a team. Do they dominate and win like they should. Even bad wins or losses can tell you much about how a team does. Our Red Raiders really Struggled against Nevada and displayed the worst game in 3 years that I have seen, yet still won and put up respectable numbers. Our teams in years past would have imploded and lost or just struggled to squeak out a win. Which separates this team from the pasts.

Our Team is still vunderable to the past problems because of coaching on current players. It will take 3 years to get rid of some of that stupidity. Leach and the other coaches can not allow our players to think that walking on the field is good enough or how much press they get determines actual performace. No its desire and raw need to win that gets the victories.

Just consider my current top 25 as a weekly power ranking of who I think is the best based on performace.

We will see how close my BCS finish is at seasons end. That one is the real tell tell. I have beaten Vegas 2 straight years in head to head.

I just ask that you look at real performance of who can really beat who. I honestly do not see Penn State beating our Red Raiders. They just do not have the tools and their performance does not suggest it. That is the point I make.

your positioning of TTU isn’t what’s causing the confusion. You have to admit that Kansas is not nearly what they were last year this year (though i am still wary of our matchup with them) and your poll displays a pretty heavy big XII bias (which you admitted in claiming the top of the SEC wouldn’t be able to keep up with the top of the Big XII. I disagree: It would be very, very even if you gave everyone a few years to adjust and assumed that the talent levels stayed the same).

I look at osu’s wins and I see a team that beat a few guys badly early in the season that, in the preseason, were looking promising. Well, none of those teams they beat are turning out to be any good except Houston, whose resurgence is due to the team settling in under a new coach: osu’s win over Houston was against a team that wasn’t playing well at all.

I have osu about 15 or 16 in my poll, just ahead of kansas who is lumped in with the voting block of USF and Pitt. (and it was painful putting pitt back in my top 25, i hope they lose fast so i can take them out again).

LSU v. Florida

Could we get leap-frogged by Florida if they beat LSU? Further, I have been to the last 4 Okie State games home and in Stillwater, It is night and day how much better we play them in Jones. I’m just glad it’s a home game this year.

Last comment: We’ll find out alot about the Pokes this week vs. the Mizzy Tigers.
I really love your 2nd comment Pablo.

I can not help that the Big 12 is better than the SEC despite ESPN bias because of their Deal to show off the SEC.

ESPN will continue to say SEC is the best conference because it pays to say it. The reality is that the Big 12 this year is hands down way better than the SEC.

The truth is that I see Alabama and LSU as the only real teams from the SEC that might be able to win more than they loose against the Big 12.

Kansas is not the team that they were last year and they were over rated last year. They did not have to play the power of the Big 12 south. Even with that said, they are most likely the 2nd best in the North.

Oklahoma is right now very good. We play them on the road in Norman. Not good for us. However, Oklahoma does implode most years at the end of the season. Can we pull it out in Norman? If we play better than we have seen so far.

Texas….. We have them at home which is a plus. But we will have to play a flawless game and not make stupid mistakes. We can not let the Texas running game burn us. That is where Texas wins games. Teams that are able to slow down the run beat them. They can not win throwing the ball.

We have yet shown that we can Beat Missouri. Its a mental issue. Missouri is not as good as Oklahoma and we were able to beat Oklahoma. So it a question getting the right mentality.

But we will have to prove that.

But I am not showing a total Big 12 bias in reality. The truth is that the Big 12 is that good this year. 7 years ago, you saw SEC have 5 teams in the top 12. They justified that by saying that the SEC was just better than everyone else.

Well the tide has turned. The Big 12 this year is pretty darn good. What makes this seem out of balance is that in order to survive and just play competitive the best teams are in the South division for the most part. Even Baylor has improved and is not the bottom of the barrel this year. A&M has a coaching problem that they will have to sort out. Its because they have had bad coaching that their level of play is horrible and the truth is that their recruitment is off. Yea they have lots of money but being stupid does not help their cause.

Thus you have Oklahoma, Missour, Texas and Texas Tech in the Top 10. Not just my poll.

Then you have Kansas and Oklahoma State in the top 25. I just happen to think that Oklahoma State is better than Kansas. Kansas will beat Iowa State, Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas State. Lose to Missouri, Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma. Its just too bad that they do not play Oklahoma State to prove the one on one match up this year. But then Kansas does not get Texas A&M the worst team in the Big 12 or Baylor who is most likely the 10th place team just ahead of Iowa State.

NO not bias. Just seeing that the Big 12 is the better conference this season. After all, 5 of the Big 12 are still unbeaten!

by Pablo M on Oct 8, 2008 1:40 PM CDT   0 recs

still have oklahoma state and kansas too high. I really don’t have a problem with the rest of your poll

The top of the SEC is at the level of the top of the Big XII with LSU, Alabama and Florida paralleling OU, Texas, Missouri and Us. I say 3 on 1 because I haven’t decided upon UT, Missouri and Us. The middle of the SEC is much better than the middle of the big XII. the bottom of the SEC is, this year, better than the bottom of the big XII. Arkansas and Miss State are their only two really, really bad teams. Arkansas would lose to everyone in the big XII, but MSU would play with all of the teams that aren’t in the rankings.

So there you go. Both leagues are head over heals better than any other in the nation right now.

by kayakyakr on Oct 8, 2008 2:47 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The SEC teams have played three conference games, and in some cases four. They beat eachother, that’s why there are no unbeatens. When this weekend is over, the Big XII will have two fewer unbeatens, as well.

Seth

Any way to add an “edit” button so if we post too quickly we can go in and ammend the post?

by Tech92 on Oct 8, 2008 4:33 PM CDT   0 recs

The best thing to do is

to send an email to the tech guys (support@sbnation.com) and ask them for the feature. I know that people have asked for this before, but I’m not sure of the status. I think they were trying to figure out a way to only allow an edit after 5 minutes, or a certain amount of time, but didn’t want to allow edits hours or days after, figuring that people who write something could then go and edit.

Interesting

This is the only forum I respond on that has this missing feature…and I respond on numerous forums of differing ‘size’. Not a biggie, though.

by Tech92 on Oct 8, 2008 10:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

that’s what i said. but they argued that they didn’t want people to be able to later redact what they said. I don’t see the problem with it.

by kayakyakr on Oct 9, 2008 8:29 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don’t even necessarily want to redact (and the other forums have about a one hour time limit to edit, then you can’t go change anything). It’s that I hate looking stupid when I use the wrong word or misspell something…or had one more little thought that would make a post more cogent.

by Tech92 on Oct 9, 2008 4:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I know

it’s something that people have complained about before. The best advice I can give you is to email those guys, let your voice be heard. They give me the keys and I get to drive.

I think we willhave to agree to disagree.

I just do not think that the SEC is all that good this year. I may be wrong but then I think I am more right than wrong on this season.

SEC just has looked aweful. It does not matter than they have played 1 more conference game than most of the Big 12. I am looking at performance not perception and I definitely do not listen to ESPN morons who for the most part must promote the SEC because they made that mega deal with the SEC to show all their games. You also have a large number of broadcasters who are from either the Big 10 or the SEC who promote their conference even when those teams suck. Its bad enough to when DR. Lou picks Norte Dame no matter who they play. But you have pretty much most of those broadcasters doing the same.

The reality is that you have the top 5 teams in the big 12 producing more than 420 yards per game. 6 are more than 390 yards per game.

The SEC just does not have that kind of production. However they do have a better defense overall. But even saying that, the SEC is just not the power that it was last year or what people are expecting.

Its a hard thing for some people to come to grips with because it defies what they have believed for years.

I look at performance, production and quality of teams played. Based on what I have seen, the SEC is off by 230 yards on average in offense and the Defense is allowing 187 more yards than last year.

Where as the Big 12 has increased its offensive production and the defense also has improved. That is the reality I speak of.

But its all speculation until the end of the season when we can finally compare the conferences in a meaningful manner. On then can it be stated for certain who has the better conference and had the tougher schedule.
