What most people do not realize is that Leach has already passed that amount paid to him last year because of the sliding scale of pay for wins.

Thus Leach right now has crossed the 2 million mark for Winning in the Gator Bowl and having 10 wins.  Leach's current contract has $168, 867 per win. This is in addition to his base salary.

Thus just on that number you have the 10 current wins plus the Gator Bowl. That gives a base of 1,857,537  with another $506,601 possible for a perfect season of 13-0 going into the National title game.

Then there is the bonuses for BCS bowls and the 1.2 million bonus for a national title.

Leach's contract from what I have been told will roll in Setenrich's salary that has been paid to him over this year. Thus add to the base $285,000 plus a few other items.

I also expect that Leach will see a significant increase in graduation bonus from the current 60% 75% 80% .... model he currently has.

I expect his base salary to double if not triple. I Also expect that the win bonus to increase. By how much? That will have to be determined by factors such as ticket sales, TV revenue and other projections.

But the point is that just based on modest increases to Leach's contract  Leach could see him being in the top 10 most highest paid coaches in the NCAA.

This number has nothing to do with compensation adds like Clothing, Comercials or other endorsement items.  How much endorsement money Leach can get is based on how much effort Leach wants to spend making appearances and doing commercials or other endorsements. Leach historically has not gone out of his way to go after that market. Leach could easily cross the 3 million plus mark last year by doing appearances and endorsements and commercials.

He will see an even greater demand for him after this season.

But I fully expect to see Leach having doubling effect on his salary without to much effort. If the Boosters really pushed to raise money and commit to a set add, then Leach could pass Brown at Texas for the second most paid coach in the Big 12.

Make no mistake,  Tech has the money to make Leach money happy. The key in reality is Leach himself and his fit in Lubbock.

If Leach is a man of his word which he has said is important to him, then he will remain here at Tech because he has said which two schools he would go to if he ever decided to leave Tech for another College.  Neither of those schools are looking to replace their coach anytime soon.

The only other place is the NFL and Leach has had an on again off again outlook. At times, he has said he does not want to go to the NFL and other times he has said it would be an oportunity. Thus, I would have to conclude that only one or two NFL teams hold any attraction for him.

The one thing I hope Myers puts into the new contract is a higher buyout amount. That is of significant importance in todays choices of coaches being drawn away from one school to another. Generally, schools look at buyout amounts to decide if its worth the effort to actually go after a coach. Some programs money is no object like Michigan, LSU and Auburn have displayed. Tennessee buyout for example was $250,000.

The issue is that by law; the base salary is set by budget which in Tech's case is controled by a bunch of beaucrats who are mostly A&M  and Texas ex's. Thus I do not see the beaucrats giving Tech any extra benefits like they do for their own schools.

Thus the difference will have to be made up through ticket sales and Boosters.

Thus for those who are worried, donate to the TTU boosters at the Red Raider Club with the purpose of boosting Leach's salary.

The truth is that Tech really should consider expanding the Stadium in seating after they finish the east side for the 400 seats they will add for the few rich people who can afford those lux boxes and actually endorse the North side expansion project.

Where the ticket office is knocked down and  seats are added to connect the East and west side stadium and leaving a space for the Jumbo tron. This would add an additional 25,000 seats bring the stadium to an absolute max compacity after the east side expansion to around 80,000.

If they should ever add an additional 2 sections to the South Side to add seats where Gate 1 and the Student Gate is then we could technically see a  90 to 100,000 seat stadium.

But that is something to consider down the road.

What are the two schools Leach said he would go to?

by jwhitettu on Nov 10, 2008 9:28 AM CST reply actions

Back in 2001

Leach did an interview where they asked him what schools he would coach for if things did not work out for him here at Tech.

He said USC and BYU in that interview was the only schools that held any interest.

granted that was in 2001, but he has never said anything since then and has made himself right at home where he can do pretty much as he pleases. He does things here at Tech that he would never be allowed to at BYU and USC …… I just do not see that job opening up for the next decade or more.

just wondering

that was a helpful bit of information. thanks. Weren’t you the fella that gets coaches fired and called for Ruffin to be fired earlier this year? How did that work out for you? Just wondering.

by eddyc555 on Nov 10, 2008 10:47 AM CST reply actions

Never called for Ruffin's job

I said time would tell by end of season for an opinion. I still think that there needs to be a change in the secondaries coaching staff. I still have not changed my mind on that.

There needs to be a coaching change to make out Secondaries more agressive and have someone teach our boys down the road to be better than what they have shown.

Yes, the cover 2 man under was a good change. But that can only take you so far. I just think that we need better coaching in the secondary.

That’s the only position I have called for and yes I named the two coaches that I thought needed to go!

I've been hearing...

that buyouts are fading away in college football, because coaches want to have every oppurtuniy to leave if they desire. The only proof I found was Mangino and Schiano. They both have no buyout clauses in their contracts. Maybe it’s a new trend, I don’t know.

Buyout Clauses in Contracts

I would highly doubt that buyout clauses ever go by the wayside. Universities as employers will always require some monetary compensation for other schools pursuing their coaches. While coaches may want no buyout clauses, they will never go away.

How ’bout them Red Raiders!

Rumors

Some things I’ve heard:
1) Leach refuses to accept a buyout in his contract.
2) All of the east-side suites and seats have been purchased for the 2010 season. The 2009 season will see a half-completed facade as the 2001 and part of the 2002 seasons had.
3) The north-side expansion will add between 10 and 15,000 seats. There is talk that the east-side expansion includes the structure for a potential second east-side expansion of a 10,000 seat upper deck. The south-side expansion and south-end jumbotron are pipe dreams at this time, and while the north side expansion is being talked about, unless we find ourselves a sugar daddy like boone pickens, we wont’ see ground broken on that until 2011 or 2012 at the earliest.

I think

that Tech will be able to offer a top level salary. I don’t really believe that will be what seals the deal for him. Any change comes down to what it probably come down to with most of us with 9 years on the job at the same place:
- Does he want to start over? Face it, no school with current success is looking for a coach. The one’s who are looking, suck right now.
- Does he like Lubbock enough to stay? Does his family like it? Nobody knows this for sure. He say’s the exact same thing every coach say’s: I love the school/city/state. Our students are the best, etc. etc.
- Does he want to work twice as hard to recruit 3- and 4-star recruits? In Texas, those guys fall in his lap. At other schools where there are openings that would be considered a move up, he will be required to recruit on a much more regional scale (i.e. out of state) and nationally. That’s not his forte.
- Is he willing to risk his reputation? When coaches quit for other jobs, they don’t often find the same level of success they had at their previous school. Especially when they leave one successful BCS school for another.
- Is he okay with idea of being fired four years into a new job? If he doesn’t compete for a conference championship very quickly at these “better” schools, he’ll be out of work in four years.

I am positive he is interested in some of the openings out there right now. He has a repustation for answering the phone no matter who calls in these instances. I think Tenn is out since it appears Butch Davis is their top choice. Leach is plan B. He doesn’t like being Plan B. He wants to be wooed as the best thing since sliced bread. That’s another of his quirks – he has a MASSIVE ego but it manifests itself in less obvious ways. He was royally pissed that Meyers didn’t redo the deal last summer, whatever the reason he was given.

I am not convinced he and Meyers have the best of relationships and that will always play into decisions on where you work. I would worry, though I wouldn’t panic. This is where Meyers needs to really step up and do right by the university, the program, and the fans.

Again...

…where does he go? Tenn. is out. Washington is out. I don’t see him going anywhere. Frankly, I see him signing a long-term deal, writing his own ticket. Being a hero here for a really long time, and maybe moving on to the NFL 10 years from now.

But that’s just me…

Peace

... I'm just sayin'

Funny you say that

Colin Cowherd, who I personally think is a dolt, said Leach would be a good NFL fit. I doubt it…he’d be a good coordinator, but not the head guy. I think he’s just now learning how to set ego aside and do what’s best for the team success (ie. running and playing defense).

But I think if North Carolina opens up if/when B. Davis goes to Tenn … that could be an interesting fit. The ACC is a weak conference, has a cool campus and town, and he could hit the BCS party within four years without having to beat two top 5 schools just to win the division. That one would make me nervous. It’s close to the coast, too. Clemson, I think, is too country for him. Not that Lubbock isn’t country, but Clemson is too close to Deliverance.

UNC, really?

i mean, it’s not out of the realm of possibility, but.. wow.

by kayakyakr on Nov 10, 2008 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Just think it would be an interesting possibility for him. They could pay him whatever he wanted, too…I fear Tech has some serious money problems at the root of some of the delay.

by Tech92 on Nov 10, 2008 10:38 PM CST up reply actions

Tech does not have money issues.

Tech has contract issues. We have three coaches currently being paid who are not even on staff right now and were either put on leave or on a delay fired status.

That’s right boys and girls. We are paying for coaches who are not coaching. Two of those fall of this year the last falls of next year. But the buyouts on those contracts are so small after this year for the last one that the school can do it without harm.

The three new contracts that the athletic program has signed over the last 18 months covers 90% of the total athletic budget each year. I expect that the new Big 12 network and the revenue from it if its done right will provide roughly 20% of the budget for the year not just football but across the board. It will boost our other programs that most people never even knew Tech had like ice hockey, field hockey just to name a couple.

Leach and Myers agreed to the delay because it would have taken off two coaches from getting paid this year. It also would have limited the package Leach could get after this season. It was a mutual agreement to wait. Leach did it to help his friend and his wife who needs the benefits of Tech right now.

So do not be to overly serious because of the delay. The money is there. But like I said, if you are all overly worried, donate to the Red Raider club for a fund to compensate Leach to add to his contract. Its ok to do that. Its how the old money schools fund their coaching staffs. So those who want to spend money can put together a fund to pay coaches better salaries.

Lets get through the Baylor game and by Dec 15 we will all hear the new details of the new contract that is to be completed by then.

by Pablo M on Nov 11, 2008 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

Well, by proxy we do have money issues since we’re paying coaches no longer here. We don’t have it to give to Leach = money problems in my book. I am already a member of the Red Raider Club and give all I intend (read: all my wife will allow).

My understanding is Leach was pissed that he didn’t get the extension in the summer, regardless of the reason. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a mutual agreement.

The ice hockey and field hockey teams are club sports not sponsored by the university, as I understand it. I could be mistaken, but they are responsible for paying their own way however they can manage to.

Hopefully it will all work out, but are those storm clouds brewing west of Brownfield?

by Tech92 on Nov 11, 2008 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

I believe

that it will take a $3.0 mm/yr offer to get him to stay…He probably doesn’t need to be the highest paid coach, but he probably wants to be top 10. He deserves it…and then he can bear the weight of hightened expectations that go with that salary. It’s a double edged sabre.

If I’m paying my coach that much, I will for sure expect this sort of season every few years. Can we do it? I’m not sure. We have a transcendent receiver and the perfect college QB right now. Does D. Lewis have the chops to replace Crab? I think so. Does Potts have any Harrell magic? I doubt it, but I think the fella behind him, Loucks, may.

Again…let’s hope Meyers can step up and do the right thing by Leach. Tech is what it is and may have a tough time replacing this guy with a top-shelf coach.

SI article

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/ncaa/11/10/leach.texastech.ap/index.html

I really think Meyers may be making a huge tactical mistake by waiting until after the year to even open up negotiations. You think schools interested in Leach aren’t dealing behind the scenes with his agent on potential numbers? That ain’t tampering, by the way.

Meyers may end up being why Leach leaves.
