Tech has a True QB Offense

The New York Times wrote a nice article in their paper about Graham Harrell.  Take some time and read it  (its a quick read).

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/10/sports/ncaafootball/10colleges.html?ref=ncaafootball

====================================================

I am disgusted that the ESPN and FoxSports "expert analysts" still call the Texas Tech offense a "system" offense.  Some of the ESPN "elite" reporters are starting to come around on the issue.  The 'few' of them are noticing the checkdowns, the QB defensive reads, the lineman pickups, the runningbacks adjustments, and the recievers defensive back reads.  All without sideline coaching help.

Mike Leach has installed a True Offensive Passing Juggernaught, that is all orchestrated by the Quarterback's reads from Graham Harrell.  He is Tech's Leader, just like Kliff Kingbury, B.J. Simmons, Sonny Cumbie & Cody Hodges were in the past.  (all excellent QB's!)

Do you see our offense getting set, and then making a 5 second pause to look back at the sidelines to recieve offensive coordinator's adjustments? No!  Because that style of offense is the actual "system" offense.  After the "system" offense play is called, the coaches are telling the QB what to do when they see the defensive setup against it.  Have you ever noticed those huge bilboards held up for the QB to look at, so that the "system" offensive QB can make the adjustments according to the coaches specifications, and not 'his own' defensive reads?

Graham Harrell makes reads, and Intelligent ones at that!  He will adjust the offense 'on-the-fly' like no other QB in college football!

Mike Leach gives any Texas Tech QB confidence.  Example:  When our Tech QB's start throwing a lot of interceptions during a game, he leaves them in.  He makes sure that the team knows that they live or die with the QB that Leach has chosen to use throughout the season.  This is exactly what a QB needs from his Head Coach, Great Leadership and Trust!

Tommy Tubberville is the exact opposite.  Example:  Chris Todd (QB) and Tony Franklin (Offensive Coordinator) were recruited and hired to turn around Auburn's dismal offense.  After only 1.5 months of actual game time, Chris Todd was moved to backup QB and Tony Franklin was Fired.  Tubberville NEVER showed full support for the new offense, or his coordinator from the get-go.  His team now reflects Tubberville's poor leadership... (and possibly, Tubberville might lose his job at the end of the year).  If you remember, Chris Todd was a Texas Tech recruit who chose to find a way-to-play at another college.  He eventually had the chance to go to Auburn or Troy.  To my dismay, Tommy 'Traitorville' turned his back on a great QB, and an excellent Texas Tech old' recruit!

====================================================

To make my statement perfectly clear.....

Texas Tech's Offense is a True Offensive Juggernaught, where the QB is making the defensive reads, as well as the players!

Missouri, Oklahoma State, and many, Many more (where the QB looks back to the sidelines for adjustments, and confirmation of the play that was called in the first place) is a "system offense"!

I tend to agree

Leach’s philosophy of every college has a system is so true.

Hell, USC, Florida, LSU, even A University in Texas’ “system” won NC’s for those schools. And, as I recall, USC was a quarterback mill, which has been a knock on us. If our “system” is supposed to be so easy that anyone could run it, then put Whitlock in at QB. See how effective he is. After all, the “system” guarantees he’d pass for 5000+ this year, right?

I do not understand why TTU gets laughed off th stage when it comes to our offense.

Chris Todd was injured at Kansas Junior College...

He had surgery on his throwing shoulder and has never fully recovered. They are saying he may never be the same. If you remember, he was known for a very strong arm. The other quarterback they’ve got has never been able to throw, he was recruited for the ground game Auburn used to play.

Agreed

I have always hated the “system” label and think that the fault was misplaced. The “system” has provided consistent 400-500 yards offensive production per game. Period. Sure the offensive scheme bulks up passing and receiving stats, but the offense as a whole is productive. What offense wouldn’t want those yards whether it was by passing or rushing? The problem with Tech in the past is not the offensive “system” but the other unrelated weaknesses of the teams (i.e., failing to beat an inferior opponent, throwing 4 plus INTs in a game, no defense, not finishing drives, etc.). This is not the offense, but the other factors that go into making a great team. Examples are TT’s losses in 2007 to OSU and Texas, both games where the offense worked, but the defense did not. The difference this year is that, while the offense is a little better than in year’s past (especially Harrell’s consistency (save the NV game)), the other components of the team are much stronger which has allowed TT to reach a new level. Nothing has changed about the “system”; we are just a better team.

everything about football is a system...

“systems thinking” is a big part of management. In systems thinking, a manager (like Coach Leach, and Graham Harrell strives to understand how when one thing happens, it affects the whole… Tech’s success is not deminished by their “system” – except in the eyes of dimwits who somehow think that they need to find a way to explain away Tech’s success.

You rightly said that “Tech gets laughed off the stage” — but I’ll tell you this: those kids out there playing defense AGAINST Tech’s offense aren’t LAUGHING – if anything they are crying! I’ve never seen more discouraged football players than those OSU and Kansas defensive players – and to a lesser extent – the might Longhorns. Next on the list… OU.

I had taken Graham for granted until I watched OSU’s QB looking to the sideline before every snap – and he looked so confused :-D Graham makes it look so easy!
