NEW RECRUIT

It was posted on the Rivals website today, 6'5'', 300 lb., offensive tackle, Michael Bowie has switched his commitment to Texas Tech from K-State. It is posted in an area that is free to all users of the site, not in a paid section, so no worries Seth. I will post the link, there isn't any inside information other than that he has a solid verbal commitment to Texas Tech. I'm glad to see we've added another big man to the '09 recruiting class!

He is a very athletic 3 star recruit...

with long arms, great upper body strength, and great size…perfect for pass blocking. He just needs to refine his skills. All of this according to ESPN.COM and Rivals.com.

some perspective

can you or anyone campare these 2009 recruits with some the players we have now in respect to their “star” rating?

This class is a little better...

than last years. However our recruits may not ever have the accolades that texas and A%M recruits have. Rivals and Scout know that schools like Tech don’t have as large of a fan base, like these others.

It’s about $$$, believe it or not. Subscriptions to these sites and magazine sales increase, when these schools’ recruits are ranked higher. I’m not saying that Texas doesn’t have better athletes than Tech though. They pretty much get their pick. I just think that if Texas recruits a kid, his ranking automatically is higher. Over-rated could be the word here.

Another thing to consider when following recruiting is this. If you have a great year on the football field, the full impact won’t be seen in recruiting, until the following recruiting class. In other words, this recruiting class won’t be as affected by our possible National Championship as next years class. The main reason for this is that most of these kids have made up their minds already.

Our recruits have gradually gotten better while Leach has been here. He has taken us to a better bowl almost every year. And winning those bowl games has definitely been a factor as well.

The best way to gage a real recruit out of Texas

Is to look at his stats and preview from Top o Texas or Texas Prep Insider or High School football scoreboard and highlights spotlights.

Other states have simular type of magazines which focus only on high school players and are not effected by Rivals or Scout or the recruiting craze because they are focusing on the kids before they are on the radar so to speak.

This class will be the best Tech has ever had but then the 2008 class was pretty damn good too.

Tech is finally getting to the level which Texas, A&M and Oklahoma have always had.

The elusive so call 5 star recruit is a myth! Of the 5 star recruits according to a report by VYPE football, gives that 5 star recruits success rate is 46. 4 star recrut success rate is 88 and 3 star is 85% 2 or less stars is 71% for players going on to the NFL.

So in my book, 3 and 4 stars are generally the better players. The Heisman star average is 3 stars coming out of High school. Just thought I would point that out!

Hey, I agree...

with everything except that we are caught up with Texas and A%M. It seems like they always get about 10 or 15 of the AJ’s Fab 44 of Texas, and we get 2 or 3 only. Maybe you can explain your view of it.

I am not an expert at all, but I am trying to learn this area of college football. I view everything Tech does, with recruiting in mind. It enables me to see our future in a way. And that’s exciting to me, especially right now. To get a win in Norman next Saturday would be ENORMOUS, for recruiting, as well as our players psyche for future trips up there.

I’ve met very few fans who are passionate about recruiting the way I am, so it is good to know I have company.

This is

the most inexact science of all the college sports sciences.

Yeah, I've watched long enough...

to see that you have to take it all with a grain of salt. But Leach’s ability to turn a 2 or 3 star recruit, into a 5 star player, is what makes it so exciting right now. There are alot of coaches that can’t turn a 5 star recruit, into a 5 star player! lol

But, I’m not so into recruiting that I can’t see reality. For example, I’m not expecting to see another season like this for while. I will be rooting for it though. And I don’t put TOO much value into those recruiting websites or magazines. As a matter of fact, I’ve never paid for any of this kind of information, other than a newspaper or two.

Hey Tech92, how do I change my name here. I feel like nobody is going to take me very seriously with this one. I thought it was funny at first, but now I regret it. I have emailed the site, with no response. I’m afraid that I’m stuck with it.

I'm not sure how to do that

but you’re probably going to have to start over. You might try emailing the excellent tech support team at : support AT sbnation DOT com. You also might try using the same picture so that we know it’s you.

One other thing that helps.

If you put your old name in the signature block for a few weeks, then people who missed the transition have an easier time figuring it out. A simple “formerly known as” works perfectly.

(Just a courtesy I learned from watching the name change game before.)

I would almost counter

that remark about Leach turning 2- and 3-star recruits into 5-star players. I think he does do a good job of finding the best fit for the player on the field, but I would hesitate to go quite that far. I think if we truly were turning them into 5-star players, we’d have a few more in the NFL by now. BUT they are good for what they do at Tech.

Have to slightly disagree here

The NFL draft is like the Heisman in how they pick players. Its really a popularity contest with so many players for so few positions.

Teams that have high success have high numbers of players going into the NFL. You also have large numbers of players who enter the draft from popular schools who have name recognition and lots of TV time on Saturday. Nearly 40% wash out that get drafted. That is the the hard truth.

With Success comes opportunity. We are starting to see more and more NFL recruiters being at the TTU games. In years past, you might get an NFL recruiter to show up to a TTU home game when they played OU, Texas or A&M. Now we are seeing NFL recruiters all the home games this season.

It also helps that we have some name talent and some successful active NFL players.

Although its true that we do not see get the equal number of the fab 44. The truth is that the fab 44 is not what they are cracked up to be. Nothing personal there. The fab 44 are made up mainly of the so called 5 star recruits with some top 4 star ones.

The truth is that what makes a 5 star is promotion and media coverage. Not necessarily talent and the skills to back up the ranking. As I pointed out, Top O Texas does not give star ratings but does give best players of the individual districts.

I point this out because, how many 5 star recruits come from 6 man or 1A schools? How many from 5A schools? You will find maybe one in a decade for 6 man and maybe 1 or 2 a year from 1A schools and you will find the lions share with 5A schools.

What you will see when you really look at this and not be swayed by the media bias you will find that in many places 5A schools are treated much like college programs and they get TV time on a regular basis. Because of this TV time the media pays more attention than they should to just those programs they watch on a regular basis.

Any player recruited by any program regardless of star could be the next Heisman! But generally, the 3 and 4 star recruits have stats and talent to back up their rating. Sometimes I can not understand the rating. An example. 19th ranking in the country and having 4th best numbers in the country gets one recruit barely a 4 star rating.

A Texas recruit having 26th national ranking an 37th best numbers is a top level by a huge margin a 5 star ranking. These players are at the same position.
The 4 star player is taller and faster than the 5 star recruit and has the better numbers than the 5 star. Thus why is he the 5 star over the 4 star? Answer: Media bias

Thus some players are giving their ranking because of media bias and by the fact of who they are recruited by. Good bad or ugly that is true.

But generally a 3 and 4 star recruit is given his numbers because of stats and talent.

1 and 2 stars either have talent or numbers but rarely both. They are the diamonds in the rough that college coaches look at to see if those kids have something special that can be molded to fit the program. The 4 star recruits are normally and almost always the true Freshman who can immediately be put into the lineup and have the skills and talent to play at college level without major development. They may have those because of excellent coaching or just pure talent for the position they play.

The point I want to make clear, is never assume a 5 star recruit is better than 3 and 4 star recruits because statistics prove that they are more than 60% of the time do not live up to the hype and are busts. But 3 and 4 star recruits do live up to what they are and they produce as expected or better than expected.

Lastly for TTU to see more of our players getting into the NFL, it will happen over time. Success of the program to get to the No.2 position in the country and having successful seasons against top teams in the country will bring more draft picks out of the program.

But it takes time to break out of the stereotypical mess that you see right now. NFL and many of the recruiters are from Big name programs. I remember a newspaper article back 15 or so years ago predicting the NFL draft then. They made three assumptions then. Michigan by name alone would send 8 to the draft. Norte Dame would send 5 Florida State at that time 8, USC 9, Texas 6, Texas A&M 5. Nebraska 8.

Thus there is the preception that some programs have better players because school has winning programs. All we have to do to get more players into the NFL is achieve the 9+ win seasons for a couple more years and TTU will see a regular supply of players entering the NFL. Success breeds more success. TTU is already looking to send 6 players into the draft with 4 of the 6 going in the first 3 rounds.

Success does and will breed the success everyone points to.
