Evolution
To those outside of Double T Nation, Texas Tech’s rise to the top of college football this year is unexpected, ludicrous, a Cinderella story at best. But to those of us who have been following Texas Tech football and the transformation that it has taken under Mike Leach, this story is one of deliberate steps, building on one another. A success story not by happenstance, but one that has been years in the making and anticipated by the Fans of Texas Tech football. Let’s take a minute to remember from whence we came.
2004 – A rough year in the Big XII south for Texas Tech. Losses to
2005 – A better year. A 9-2 regular season finish with losses to
2006 – A rebuilding year. Graham Harrell secured the starting QB slot as a sophomore. A 7-5 regular season finish (4-4 in conference) with no remarkable wins was most notable for losing to
2007 – A somewhat disappointing year. To the outsider, this year looked to be a chance for Texas Tech to move beyond the middle of the pack and perhaps break out. A returning starter at quarter back and strong recruiting made the season look promising. However, disciplinary issues limited the play of Shannon Woods, and Baron Batch was out with an injury, making the offense rely almost exclusively on the passing game. Difficulties on the defensive side of the ball led to the firing of the defensive coordinator mid-season and promoting assistant Ruffin McNeill into the position. A home victory over #4
2008 – 10-0 to this point. Back-to-back victories over 2 top 10 teams. Ranked for the entire season, most of it in the top 10. I could name the entire starting lineup and most of the second string as outstanding performers. The year started with many questions to answer: How would the supposedly improved defense perform? Could Harrell and Crabtree repeat the statistically phenomenal season that was 2007? Could Texas Tech avoid the “bad loss” that has plagued them the past several seasons? How would they stand up to a rigorous conference schedule? Can they really compete with
So far, all of these questions have been answered in the affirmative. Only one remains, and the answer will come on November 22. Looking back, the comeback win over
Over the past several years, improved recruiting has brought much needed consistency to the roster, allowed players to develop as a team, and added noticeable depth. In 2007, we saw glimpses of what this team could accomplish. The defense began to find itself, especially in the
The confidence inspired by the 2006 win coupled with the desire driven by the disappointment of 2007 have culminated 2008. We have seen the strengths and weaknesses, overcome the mental obstacle of beating Texas and felt the joy of that dramatic win, seen the team perform nearly flawlessly at times, and nearly watched all of our hopes disappear in a blocked extra point in overtime and in slow motion during a last minute drive as a tipped ball came down through the hands of the opposing safety, only to fall harmlessly to the ground.
I cannot predict with certainty what the next 7 weeks will bring, but I can say this: it has been an incredible time to be a Red Raider.

memories. I missed out on the 2006 season (AFN coverage of college ball is even worse than ABC’s regional programming, heh), and will always kick myself for my missing out on the comeback vs the Gophers
disagree on the 2006 class. It was a big class with a lot of big names, but it also had only about a 50% success rate. On paper it may have been the best, but the 2004 or 2005 class is far outperforming it.
You are much more up on the recruiting scene than I
But there is a success/failure rate for every class. Even if you only get 50% success, the fact that you are starting with a better pool means the 50% that do turn out are going to be better than the 50% that turn out from a less talented pool. My point is that Tech has been able to draw better recruits and is not as reliant on JC transfers that provide only about 1 year of top level performance (assuming it takes a year for most to learn the system).
If you look at the number of 2006 recruits that are seeing playing time this year versus the number of 2005 recruits that saw playing time last year, how do they pan out?
I have really enjoyed being a Red Raider fan these last several years. Even if I knew in my heart of hearts we wouldn’t be a serious threat to the conference championship, I always knew were in 98% of our games and nothing was impossible. In the two decades prior to that, we could hope for the stray 8- or 9-3 season…but for the most part, it was a good year if we scored the Independence/Copper/All-american/Alamo Bowl (before the Alamo Bowl was moderately cool).
It’s been a fun ride, for sure. Hopefully (and it won’t get mentioned) there is the status quo at Tech and we continue on this path of national prominance.
credit where due, a small question...
Tech’s victory over Cal in the Holiday: I thought Cal was rated #5?

So Proud to be a Red Raider
This post really takes me back, I graduated in ‘05, so all of these things happened as I was back in Houston desperatly trying to find the games on TV or listening on the radio. However, when I was at Tech I NEVER missed a game, we have come so far in that time. I have to say it is refreshing to see a QB start for more than one year at a time, after Kliff, it just felt like such a rough patch, we never knew what QB we could be getting, or if he could pull out the big ones. But year after year we made strides, and it did feel like we had a few steps backat times, and times where the whole Mike Leach ’system’ was in serious question.
You really pegged the highs and lows of these times, but I have to say you missed the pivotal moment that really shaped This season was the Gator Bowl. The comeback from 18 points really made this team gell and I believe created the confidence that everyone has in each other to win no matter what (example the Texas game or Nebraska game). That really is the only thing I would add. Great post
The Gator bowl comeback was great, but I thought that the win over OU last year was more impressive, considering OU was ranked #4. I agree that, between the two, it probably helped to solidify things going into this season. I also thought the Minnesota win was more of a turning point; however, in that it came during a rebuilding year and I thought that the light all of the sudden went on for Harrell especially. He drank the kool-aid after that game and started trusting the system versus trying to do it all himself as he had often done earlier in the 2006 season. I thought that in 2007, they expected everything that happened, and wanted more.
Golden Gopher game
I remember that game….I was a true PAIN to watch…not for the football. But for the fact that Dick Vermiel and Marshall Faulk called that game on the NFL Network. Atrocious!!! its amazing how we take good commentators for granted.
Dick Vermiel: ooooooh, that’s a good play. Huh, Marshall?
Marshall Faulk: Yeah, coach. I remember running that play in practice with the Rams
Dick: oooooh, So and so. He’s a good player.
Marshall: Yeah, Coach
in-fucking-sufferable
But the good part was I remember playing The Matador Song over and over on my mp3 player over the stereo for good luck…HA HA! It worked!!!

Gotta Keep Leach
I have living and breathing red raider sports since I was big enough to walk. I have been to the Jones in the late 1960’s for games and I was there when beat Texas in 1974. I entered Tech in 1977 and saw our dreams go down the drain at the A&M late hit and the dreadful 1980’s. I love Spike and he did a good job but Leach has taken to a new level as has been shown here in such a great way!! I could tell from the beginning of Leach’s tenure that we finally had a chance in every game we played. It did mean would win but at least we could finally compete. And as for the bad losses as most of us know that didn’t start with Leach but it did continue until now. It really is amazing to see that Tech at worst will finish the regular seaon 11-1 and I think and hope it will be 12-0. I think Leach will get a great new contract and will stay especially with the next round of Stadium improvements and don’t you think Under Armour might be a little reluctent to sign a new 5 yr contract with Tech if they think Leach is going to leave? Anyway, I just hope the contract gets done and we have several more years of great football on the South Plains!!!! Wreck’em Tech!!!!!!!!!!!
Under Armour
I didn’t think about that, but logically you would have to assume they might be reluctant to make this new deal with Tech if Leach was leaving.
Being an accountant and famous don't go together. If you're a famous accountant, you probably did something wrong.
Under Armour
I guess I don’t understand why Under Armour would care that much if Leach stays or not. It is money in their pocket either way, right? No, I do not want Leach to go either. I really don’t, but I think Tech would hire someone great in his place. Art Briles to be specific. Let’s just enjoy the ride that we have right now because it is truly special.

Under Armour
Ask yourself who team has lead the nation in offense/passing? who is # 2 right now?
Who is a media darling as a coach? Would Under Armour really want Art Briles instead of Mike Leach? So why didn’t Under Armour pick Baylor? Leach is a huge part of this.
It is marketing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
From then to now
Great write up. This team as come from so far. My son (then a TT freshman) and I watched their leader as a RS freshman play a few series at that heartbreaking Cotton Bowl. I remember thinking, so this is the future. I screamed at the television as that sophmore threw interceptions in 2006. I thought of the lost opportuniites after attending the Colorado loss in 2007 and watching the Okie lite loss on tv. Yet today as GH has led this outstanding team to the brink of places no Red Raider has gone, I can only say thanks for the wonderful ride. Regardless of what the future brings it has been a great time to be a Red Raider and I trust GH and Crab because they only know how to play all in. That is how this whole team plays and they learned it from that old pirate, Captain Leach.
Wreck Em and Harrell for Heisman (Crab will have to settle for $25 million over 4 years).
