Interesting article from CNNSI about Tech's financial budget

Interesting read from CNNSI about Tech and its athletic program's budget.  This goes to show it gives Leach more reason to stay and continue to build his program, rather than start all over with new players and fans.

At sports sites, and ROCKY TOP TALK, they seem to think Tech has no chance of keeping Leach. They see us as naive to the financial details. I hope Leach stays, and I feel that he will. Now more than ever.

Go Tech!!!

I wouldn't quite put it that way.

At RTT, most of us think the odds of Leach coming to Knoxville are something less than 50% (hey, that’s about as accurate as any assessment in coaching searches anymore). We are fully aware that TTech has its share of deep booster pockets (hello, oil!), and that the football craziness in Texas ensures that the money will flow in.

Actually, a lot of people in the UTenn camp think that Leach is playing up the Tennessee gig for leverage in contract negotiations. If so, we certainly don’t hold it against him. (If I had that luxury, I’d probably be looking for a raise myself.)

But what we do prate on incessantly is whether or not we’d like Leach to come over, not really whether or not he’s likely to. Most of that is driven by our starvation for an offense that works, FWIW.

Not suprised

Texas Tech is in a Building and expansion period with the program. Thus Tech is spending much more than average right now.

Texas has the slush fund that they can use thus they do not have to add some things to the budget. Example is UT has their football stadium upkeep paid for by the school. At Tech, the football budget has to pick that up. There are other simular examples.

But the special extra money that Texas gets along with Texas A&M make it impossible for Tech to ever catch them.

Most of the big deep pocket schools have these kinds of slush funds. In the SEC they have corruption and kick backs that would mind boggle even a politician.

When the Big 12 gets off its duff and launches the TV network with at a min a 4 to 5 channel network, the amount of funds for the programs will jump significantly.

I also think its time for the Big 12 to renegociate the terms of the compensation of the Big 12 to more properly fit what is seen in reality. Nebraska and Texas A&M are no longer the draw they once were and its unfair to give them more money because of their past. I think that money should be distrobuted either equally or give teams that have success a bonus type of share system. That way they benefit for having a winning program and the programs on the bottom have something to fight for but still get significant money to compete.

UT's

athletic department is a completely self-sufficient entity apart from the University of Texas. It pays for itself and funds all sports with zero help from the college. In fact, the athletic department gives approx $5 mm annually back to the general fund of UT for other uses.

Amazing article in the last Texas Monthly on this and how it works. Pick up a copy. It’s an interesting read.

UTenn operates the same way.

At least, the men’s athletic dep’t does. The women’s side does rely on some state funding, although the basketball team really helps. That’s probably the reason that Fulmer was dismissed, actually. With attendance and merchandise sales down, the budget was taking a hit. Without state funds to help soak the blow, that presented a serious problem for the other sports (baseball, track/field, swimming, etc.) that rely on the football and basketball surplus revenue.

Between licensing, parking fees, ticket sales, merchandising/licensing, etc., UTenn makes a lot of money off the mens’ athletic department.

Good read indeed...

I read that article on a plane trip to Los Angeles last week. It is a fascinating article. You’ll be amazed at the numbers thrown around, but you can’t really complain seeing as how they run it like a company. I definitely recommend the article.

in $$$,$$$,$$$ ... Tech Cannot Compete with uT or aTm.

Permanent University Fund

This fund was set up back in 1839, and now the wealth only is used at .. uT’s.. or.. aTm’s.. main campuses or satellite campuses.

I applaud Texas Tech for keeping us in the Black.

Its hard to compete with fund forces this large, using a pre-conceived funding program before the university of Texas was even born. How can other ‘State run’ campuses, like Texas Tech get into this mix? We can’t. We don’t have the Alums’ in the Legislative body to pass such a bold change.

Not to mention the legislature is ten minutes away from UT. Makes lobbying a tad easier when Earl can take you to lunch every day.

UT Has always been in the black

As pointed out, University of Texas has more money than they know what to do with.

The athletic budget does not have to carry many things that other schools do. When the school can afford to pay for stuff for the athletic programs then those programs do not have that kind of pressure nor have to worry about making a profit. Thus Texas and Texas A&M do raise lots of money because of the size of their schools and the fact that they have had a long time in generating income.

Another thing, when you see that an athletic program has pure investments to generate income that should be a signal of just how much money they are rolling in.

Imagine if Tech suddenly wiped out 1/3 of the budget for the athletic programs and paid for them out right. What effect would that have across the board not just in football. Thats the kind of power the permanent fund has.
