Where do we go from here?
Losing any game is tough. Dropping a game near the end of a season like this is especially so, with so many big things in your sights. It would be easy to feel disappointment and crawl back home, convinced we don't belong at the Big Boy table. Baloney. That is what OU and Texas expect of Texas Tech, and we should have enough West Texas grit to refuse to give it to them.
There's a saying in live theatre: A bad dress rehearsal means a good performance. It makes you focus. On Saturday, we saw a painful display of the corollary: a great dress rehearsal can lead to a terrible performance. You get complacent. You lose focus. Bad things happen.
Texas Tech's dress rehearsal was 2 weeks ago versus Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State is a much better team than they showed two weeks ago, just as Tech was a much better team than they showed this Saturday. Don't under estimate the effect that playing a near flawless game against the #9 team had on the minds of a bunch of 18-23 year old men. The off week did not help us this time. The college game is cyclical. It is tough to stay at your peak week-in and week-out. This Saturday was a learning experience for Tech. It was the first time EVER that Tech has been in that kind of a game situation. They played like deer in the headlights. This team can play against OU. They beat them in 2007. The biggest difference was that the stakes were not as high. We cracked under the pressure. We've gotten it out of our system. Our coaches won't let it happen again.
We are staring an 11-1 regular season in the face. That is a great season no matter who you are. There is still a chance that Tech will play in the Big XII championship game and possibly a BCS bowl. At a minimum, the Cotton bowl. Playing in Dallas is never a bad thing. Especially for recruiting.
The thing about Evolution is that it is continuous. It doesn't care if there are setbacks, roadblocks, or nay-sayers. When evolution is taking place, it finds a way to continue. We are still evolving.
Some people think this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Tech. I think it is a first in a lifetime. The sun is not setting, it is rising. Year after year, Tech has been able to reload on offense and play at very high levels. Although Crabtree is a rare talent that we are likely going to lose to the NFL (though I would love for him to stay, he would be crazy not to go) and Harrell's 3 years of experience will be difficult to replace, the overall level of talent at our skill positions is much better than it has ever been.
The last time we replaced a multi-year starter at QB, it was Kliff Kingsbury. His replacement was B.J. Symons, a guy with a cannon for an arm that brought the ability to stretch the field. Stretching the field is important in Leach's offense because it creates more space. While Harrell has adequate arm strength, I think there is no question that the heir apparent (Potts) has a significant advantage in that department.
Woods graduates, but Baron Batch will return next year and will be the #1 back. I'm sure Crawford will split time, but Batch will be the go-to guy. How exciting is that?
Morris is the only graduating receiver. Say what?
Our entire defensive line returns.
Our entire linebacking corps returns. Though they have struggled at times this year, the group is mostly sophomores, and they will be much better with a year of experience under their belts.
Though we are graduating 2 starting safeties, we keep Wall and Nickerson at corner. We have spent some recruiting capital on defense, and our underclassmen in the defensive secondary are bigger and more athletic than we have had in the past.
We have at least 2 games left in our season. One against an improving Baylor team and a bowl game. With our record, whomever we play will not be a slouch. We may end up playing in a BCS bowl. Looking ahead to next year, we will have another chance for another Tech first: back-to-back 10 win seasons. We have no reason to expect any less. After that, who knows? In the Big XII south, we will always face Texas and Oklahoma. We have beaten each of them in the past 2 seasons. We had the "Tiger slam" of college football in that we beat both in a 12 game stretch. The next step will be beating both in the same season. It wasn't this year, but it is on the horizon. We have earned the right to be taken seriously. We have pulled our chair up to the table. And regardless of what fans on other sites may be saying, we're here to stay.
GUNS UP!

Awesome Post!
I’m with you. So many people are acting like our grandmother died. We have the same record as 0U and TU, and are tied for 1st in the Big XII South. Our guys still ROCK!!!!
We hang 70 on Baylor Saturday and who knows, the BCS gods might smile upon us and we go to Arizona. If not, I will gladly go see them in Dallas.
Wreck ’Em Tech!

sly is right
I could not believe the number of “Raider fans” voicing their disgust at the team over Saturday’s performance. What a total crock………..must be the same fans that can’t get the fight song correct…………Tech is much like every other school in the country in that they have been winning and losing games for years. In our case, we have been getting better every year as of late and at 10-1 we stand with OU, ut, Florida, and a host of other “traditional” powerhouses.
Guns up! Heads up! Lets do something better than 10-1, lets get to 11-1 BEFORE the bowl. Remember, our house – our time.
If you find that getting wasted by a very good OU team causes you to not be a fan anymore, then got to Walmart and get a ut jersey and cheeer for the second best team in Texas.

Expectations
Some are real, many are false …. for all who are so disappointed and complaining about last Saturday, get a life. The main thing is that Tech put themselves in a position to go to the BCS Championship! How many teams have even a chance to do that so late in the season? We should all be very proud of this program and it’s development over the past years and treat this as just a part of the learning curve. It’s not doom and gloom, it’s something to be excited about and look forward to continued success. If Tech goes to the Cotton Bowl, that’s not a bad deal, and, who knows, they may still get to a BCS bowl. For sure, they have received more media attention and national fan support than any program this year. It’s been a great ride and it’s not over yet!!
Go TECH!!

Yea team
Good post. I have read some of the remarks from other sites as well and there are some supposed fans that are really dissing this exceptional team. They were over-ready for the OU game and never settled down until late in the game, too late to rebound against an excellent OU team. With their heads back on their shoulders and not floating around in the clouds, this team may destroy any and all remaining foes. The talent and expertise is still there. So many here in Austin have never given Tech any credit and they are now gloating because we lost-one game-the same number of losses they have-to us. Keep backing this team. The ride is still spinning. GO TECH!

Enough
about OU and the debacle in Norman. Time for everyone to turn their attention to a much improved and dangerous Baylor team.

I agree
with Tech92, enough about the OU loss. It’s over and let’s support our team against Baylor. They are very dangerous and we need to respond with a huge win!

Keep in mind, Baylor had a bye last week so they have two weeks to prepare for us.
Another key point is Art Briles knows us better than Bob Stoops does…and we know how that turned out.
I hate to use the “T” word (for trap game), but I’m hoping the Captain and McNeil are getting the troops fired up!

Big difference
Briles may know our offenses cause he uses it but he has never seen Crabtree or Batch in a game also there seems to be a great difference in the talent gap from OU to Baylor. And even if Baylor is better our talent is way closer to OU than to Baylor. Defensively, their QB maybe good but is there oline anthing close to UT or OU I think not. Anyway, at the Jones I think our frustration comes out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wreck’em TECH Beat Baylor Keep Leach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

read this
Texas Tech
What’s left: A home game against Baylor and a lot of hoping and waiting. First the Red Raiders have to rebound from Saturday’s huge loss at Oklahoma and avoid a hangover against an improved Bears team. Then they have to hope for Oklahoma to lose at Oklahoma State.
Chances are: Long, but not impossible. BCS guru Jerry Palm still gives Tech a chance to reach the national championship game if Oklahoma loses. In Palm’s scenario, Tech holds the head-to-head tiebreaker on Texas, could win the Big 12 title and finish 12-1 by beating Missouri.

I don’t see this season as once in a lifetime at all. I see some continued development over the next few seasons and the talent pool looks to be improving to help get that done. There may be some initial letdown in play simply because of the experience factor at some key positions but we’ve got several good prospects to work with.
Whether we can meet or exceed this season next year is more up in the air, but it’s not out of the question. I don’t see a big letdown coming at all, but you’ve got to admit UT, OSU and the other conference teams are gonna be gunning for us next year…..just like we’ll be gunning for OU. Those other teams are also bringing back a lot of their best players so it’s not gonna be any easier next time around.
There does seem to be one hurdle we haven’t gotten over yet – the ability to keep our heads about us for every game of the season. Sometimes people say ‘typical Tech’, but it’s really something that every team faces. It happened to USC and Florida against mediocre competition so it’s not a Tech thing at all. It’s almost impossible for young kids to always have their heads on right each and every time, but it can and does get done by the teams that succeed. I don’t have a clue what the secret is but that’s what we pay coaching staffs millions of dollars to take care of. I hope they figure it out.
Whether the school can indefinitely sustain the larger football budget we’ve had the last 5-6 years is another question. But that’s a long-term issue, not something that will hurt us in the short-term.

I agree ot an extent....
This was not a once in a lifetime shot for Tech. I do feel that it was a once in a cycle year for Tech. Every 3 years or so Tech seems to have a peak year with developed senior leaders at skill positions. Tech doesn’t have the depth that UT and OU have and maybe won’t for the foreseeable future. Tech really doesn’t “reload” the way Texas and OU do. That is why this year was so important to Tech. It was a buildup of the right players at the right positions with the right schedule.
The “typical tech” talk is garbage. I saw those discussion on 12th Manchild and couldn’t believe how the only joy they’ve had this season was being able to watch Tech lose.
There is one key for Tech, that in my mind weighs above all others: Tech has to sign Mike Leach to a ridiculous contract. He has steadily brought better players to the Hub and is maturing as a coach. If Tech loses him, I see Tech spiraling back down to mediocrity rather than continuing a steady, upward climb.

As far as Baylor goes
The difference will be in how McNeill goes about restoring some confidence in the 4-3 scheme. Art Briles has been phenomenal this year at putting his quarterback in down and distance plays that set him up for success, whereas many offensive coordinators are satisfied with letting an athletic talent like Griffin set up in the zone-read and leave him to make something happen on his own. This is the sort of situation that McNeill, who is nothing if not conservative in his schemes, will look at and decide to start with our typical zone play and challenge Griffin to find the holes while being pressured. Briles will probably anticipate this by exploiting the soft coverage early, setting up easy throws with good potential for yards after completion, and probably try to get Griffin out of the pocket for some cheap yardage on designed runs and scrambles. What I’d do is challenge our outside linebackers to make plays from sideline to sideline, which, if their performance to date is any indication, would force the secondary to creep in- Bird, Williams, and Riley just aren’t all that fast. I’ll get excited when if we can minimize the damage of this gameplan with solid tackling and quick reads, mainly so we can see more of our dime/Joker package, which I think has just been dynamite so far.
How we have the advantage: McKinner Dixon lives in the backfield, and as such can make a meal out of a quarterback scrambling to make a play. Brandon Williams is as good as he’s ever been, and Baylor doesn’t have the kind of power game that will allow them to run away from his side the way OU did. He’ll make big things happen, and hopefully scramble a still-young quarterback’s composure. Colby Whitlock is once again playing against a spread set that he can wreak havoc on without getting isolated inside nearly ever play. Baylor’s game isn’t anything remarkable in the world of spread offenses- where it distinguishes itself is in Griffin’s athleticism and Briles’ playcalling smarts. That leaves a gap in the team talent department that a pissed-off Raider D should be able to fill nicely.
