Why the SEC Is Completely Over-rated

This is a good shout-out to the "Wizard of Odds", which posted logically Why the SEC is completely Over-rated

One of the biggest lies going around is that Southeastern Conference football is second to none. Don't buy into it, because it's simply not true, especially this season.

I'm truly tired of hearing of how the SEC conference is dominant, especially from the "elite sports media", who have no-clue (or are supporters of their own conference because they are that conference's alum's.)

Each week, I check out the Sagarin Ratings, and see how the "strength in schedule" changes per team.  And I love seeing most SEC teams "strength is schedule" change drastically.

Rank of Schedule: This is not useful, until the season is over.  Any team will not know how tough their schedule was until the season is over, due to the rise and fall in the rank of each team that they play.  Example: Alabama supposedly played a Top 25 Clemson Team. But in reality they didn't. You have to wait till that Clemson Team's season is over, then look back to see if Alabama's schedule was tough.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

Here in SEC land,

You have 3 teams that are consistant powerhouses that vie for the championship on a regular basis: Florida, Georgia, and LSU.

My guess is that the Big 12 answers with OU and TU.

Second Level SEC (Teams that have a reputation for championship play and win one once in a while): Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee.

Big 12 answers with: Missouri, Nebraska, Aggie

Third Level SEC (usually get the “thanks-for-playing” bowls): Miss. St., Arkansas, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Ole Miss.

Big 12 third level: Baylor, Colorado, KSU, KU, and ISU.

I see Tech and OSU at level 2 in the Big 12. Hopefully Tech will improve to be a solid 2 after this year and then move to a level one next year.

This is just my humble obersvation from living in the region for almost 17 years now.

I don't think

I’d put Aggie in tier two. They haven’t done anything of note since 1998. They have been so consistently inconsistent that you can’t call them a second level power outside of their sheer student body size (in more ways than one) and money they pull in.

They seem have a history of this:

decent year

Top to Bottom

Big 12 vs. SEC

Oklahoma #3 (10-1) – Alabama #1 (11-0)
Texas #4 (10-1) – Florida #2 (10-1)
Texas Tech #7 (10-1) – Georgia #13 (9-2)
Oklahoma St. #11 (9-2) – Mississippi #25 (7-4)
Missouri #12 (9-2) – LSU (7-4)
Nebraska (7-4) – South Carolina (7-4)
Kansas (6-5) – Vanderbilt (6-5)
Colorado (5-6) – Kentucky (6-5)
Kansas St. (5-7) – Auburn (5-6)
Baylor (4-7) – Mississippi St. (4-7)
Texas A&M (4-7) – Tennessee (4-7)
Iowa St. (2-10) – Arkansas (4-7)

Big 12 wins at least 7, more than likely 9/10 of these.

Wes Welker can't be stopped.

If it makes you feel any better, most SEC fans hate that meme too.

It used to come from regional favoritism, but the recent culprit is lazy journalism. It’s like how the announcers only ever talk about 1 or 2 players on each team (the "superstars"). That way, they only have to know anything about a small number of players. They assume that we’re only interested in the starts, so they can blow off the contributions of everybody else.

The talking heads do the same thing with the conferences. They know of a few teams in the SEC, so they hype it up and don’t have to learn about the other teams. That’s partly why you never heard of Kansas last year until they were actually chosen for the Orange Bowl. It just took too much effort to learn that there’s a city named “Lawrence” and that they play football there.

Yeah, the announcers get to me, too. Before last weeks game, I was thinking that if Musburger talked one more time about the ‘strength and size of those hands’ re Crabtree, I might puke.
