NEXT YEARS  QB

Does Tech   have any  QB'S in their coffers that have some mobility?  i.e.  like McCoy, Tebow, Bradford, Reisling,Ganz     Does Taylor Pootts have any mobility? Tech needs someone that adds that extra dimension, to their passing game.   Harrell  looks completly helpless when he is pressured.[ Bledsoe like] ...  B J  Symons had good  armand good  mobility in the pocket and ran for several 1st downs on third down situations when flushed from the pocket.

Yes

Actually Potts will move more if the offense calls for it. The kid out of Friendswood is where the future is. Jacob Karam. This is an athletic kid that will be a huge asset in years to come.
Tech has a lot of depth in the QB dept as all upcoming candidates are talented.

Acutally..

I have watched Potts in Abilene his last year and with Tech. He has a better arm than Graham and same amount of mobility.

QB's

Here’s a good discussion about future Tech quarterbacks. I personally like Seth Doege.

Wes Welker can't be stopped.

I’d like Doege add about 15 pounds before he plays. Interested to see Karam, assuming he signs. He’s a bit short, but that doesn’t seem to matter a lick in college.

I was curious about Doege too.

What’s the deal with him? Does anybody have some dirt on this guy they could educate me with?

Go Tech!!!

He’s not a fresh face simply because he was here during the spring, but true freshman Seth Doege is the “new” guy in the mix. Doege is as naturally talented a signal caller as Mike Leach has ever had but he’s battled knee injuries in the past which kept him from playing his junior and senior seasons. What Doege also has going for him is the “it” factor. Teammates are drawn to Doege’s leadership and he has a B.J. Symons/Sonny Cumbie like competitive nature about him that his coaches like, especially Leach. Doege will redshirt but he’s one to watch for the 2009 season.

Doege will be next years QB most likely

Nothing against Potts here. He is a good QB in general. But he struggles in areas he should not at this point in time.

Potts may run the program next year as a senoir. Leach will make the choice in the Spring. But Leach made a strong statement for Doege and the future of Tech QBs back in early August.

Leach pointed out that Doege is no stranger to the Tech program. Doege has come to the Tech camp since he was in the 8th grade and has impressed Leach over the years. Its also why Leach stuck with Doege when Doege could not play his senoir season with not just one knee injury but a double injury to both legs.

Doege is also very mobile and he has pretty good speed. Harrell also has good speed and could have gone to any number of programs which are noted for running QBs. Just wanted to point that out. Harrell ran the ball well against OU and Texas and was able to pull away and make the corner on a couple of scrambles.

Doege is faster than Harrell. If Doege takes advantage of the coach Troy Stevens and YoYo Szendrei they will help him gain a good 10lbs of muscle and make him significantly stronger over the next 6 months.

Doege is very smart and he was able to graduate early from Frenship. Leach likes him and remarks time and again how comfortable he is with Doege and how well he knows the offense.

So its either going to be Potts as a senior or Doege. The shootout for the job will happen in the spring. Much the same way Harrell won his job his sophmore year.

Some points: Potts will be a junior, not a senior. He has also struggled on the practice field but seems to play lights out when he gets significant time in a game.

Doege is a mover. While Graham will move around in the pocket to stay alive (and when he’s moving laterally, he stays alive very well, just needs to not backpedal), Doege will probably play with a bit more reckless abandon, scrambling and trying to make plays with his feet.

do you know if there is any concern about the injuries to Doege? I would be apprehensive about a kid who has had so many injuries while only in high school. Could this also affect his mobility at all? And the lack of playing his last two years would also concern me. I know Leach knows what he is doing, but do you think that could be an issue in the back of his mind?

And how do you pronounce Doege? Is is Doje or Dej or Dogie? Just curious.

Doege currently has not injury concerns.

He had an ACL to one leg and sprained ligaments to the other. He has spent the spring and fall in leg strengthening and working hard to get faster and stronger in the leg department just here at Tech. He also spent a year recovering from the surgery. Something you rarely do not see.
Frenship was blessed this year of a high quality QB who may be just as good as Doege. Frenship is 12-0 and ranked 6th in the state and is predicted to get to the title game. They play this Friday here in Lubbock against one of the Schools from Denton. Game at Lowery Field if anyone is bored and wants to watch a high school playoff Friday night.

I can not remember if it was KMAC Channel 28 ABC or KCBD Channel 11 NBC or The local Fox KJTV channel 34 who ran a spot light on Doege after Leach spoke so highly of him back in August. I saw it and the spot light pretty much put to bed any concerns about knee problems or other potiential problems. Doege stated that because he has not played in over a year his legs have had plenty of time to not only heal properly but get stronger. Thus avoiding the problems which young kids normally have which is return to play before they were ready causing lingering problems. In fact, Doege was doing 40 yard time sprints and posted a 4.50 which was shown in the spotlight

I will try to find where the spot light interview and review of Doege a couple of months ago. But I did see it on one of the local sports broadcasting stations. If anyone knows which station or if the sports broadcaster is reading this then post the link to it.

Kayakyakr

I thought Potts would be a senior. My Mistake. However, with Leach, its who impresses in practice who get the nod not who shows up for a game here or there. That was the reason why Harrell got to start as a sophmore and the other transferred out to a JC for a semester.

I am sure Doege will have happy feet more than Harrell has right now. But I remember that Harrell had happy feet when he started as a Sophmore.

As for Potts playing lights out with the time he has played. I disagree. He played well but not lights out. He made several serious mistakes which was obvious and led to turnovers.

I just think that Doege has the same amount of experience with the Tech program as Potts right now. Spring Red and Black game will tell the tale of who will lead the program into the future.

But to be honest, I do not think its such a bad thing to have a more aggressive QB. Harrell has played it safe. But imagine a QB who has run threat ability with speed who can make plays! Imagine that threat with Crabtree next year. I also am looking forward to Trio of Crawford, Batch and Jeffers who has been pretty impressive on scout team. I think he will have play time next year because he is that good and has blazing speed.

The only thing

I will say in Potts’ defense is that he gets very, very few opportunities to shine. And some of those come with the other second stringers. He has done well, all things considered, when given the opportunity.

It’s tough coming in during a blowout. You don’t have the same focus and intensity when you know your only job is to simply wind the clock and finish things off.

Crabs will be gone for sure next year. The nfl is calling and Crabs will answer in the top 5.

But we should all feel comfortable with the stable of receivers he is leaving behind.

by pcrawttu on Nov 26, 2008 10:38 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If Crabtree has any brains and any smarts

He will stick for at the very least one more if not two more seasons. He is very good but he has some maturity to do before he should go to the NFL. If he leaves early like after this season, he may find himself riding the bench or struggling to get play time at the next level.

Do not mistake what I am saying. Crabs is a very talented player. But he needs to mature a bit more. The game with OU highlighted this point strongly. Although he is talented he needs a few more tools and some maturity. Plus, chances are he would get the Heisman next year if he stayed.

I’d like to see the NFL stop taking any player who hasn’t finished his eligibility for the reasons you mention – better for the kid IMO. But the big money and imagined fame are a powerful lure to most kids. Maturity and seasoning have a hard time standing up against big houses and fancy cars [not to mention the nubile young wenches]. Ironically, the kids with more maturity are the ones that usually resist temptation.

It will be Taylor Potts

Who has the overall physical / mental / competitiveness between the two? Taylor Potts.
He has competed for the position before, he is bigger, he is more mentally tough, he knows the offense better. And he is faster than most think. Youth and inexperience will make a player instinctively run from the pocket. Taylor has grit and strength (which comes from being older and working out in the weight room longer than the other challengers). Believe me, Tech will be a winner either way, but I think Taylor Potts is going to be a great QB next year for Texas Tech!

No question,

Taylor Potts is very good. I just happen to like Doege.

We’ll let the Capt’n decide.

good feedback

Next Year

I think the Capt. has recruited well at the QB spot and if Karam does sign then we will have at least 2 QB’s who can bring some running to the table. Also, it will be interesting to see if Doege is fully healthy and put on muscle if Leach doesn’t put in somethings for him as a change of pace. Potts is a bigger version of B.J. and if he keeps his head he will be very good as he can throw the long ball better than Harrell. Loeng was his teammate in Abeline a they work well together then you throw in Lewis, and easy Ed then things look great. I think James has a breakout seaon next year and I like our variety of running backs. we are on our way UP!!!! Wrech’em TECH Beat Baylor Keep Leach!!!!!

Darn need edit button for these posts

Doege is pronounced that is Dough Gee. I was thinking about how it was pronounced rather than proper spelling of his name!

10forTech

I originally thought as you did just from reading the name. But all the sports broadcasters and the people who interviewed Doege pronounced it “Dough Gee or Gey” Gey like “Key”.

Anyway, that is how it was pronounced at his signing the letter of intent and at all the interviews he has done which is significant. Doege has had about 7 interviews this year. That is far and beyond any of the other signed recruits and 7 more than Potts.
