BCS Scenario

I posted earlier that OU winning the Big 12 championship puts UT and TTU fighting for the Big 12 at large bid. So now that OU will most likely go to the NC game, what happens now? Do we as Red Raider fans initiate a large scale 39-33 campaign which involves a flyover at the Big 12 championship game, websites, shirts, shameless lobbying by Mike Leach, and just an overall crybaby attitude?

The answer is NO. The great thing about being a Red Raider fan is the fact we don't do things like that. UT, OU, and TTU all had really great seasons. The way the system works when 3 teams tie and all beating each other there is no other way to decide on who goes where and plays who except subjectivity. UT had a great season and yes they did beat OU at a neutral field and they deserve some credit. So does Tech and so does OU. Let hold our heads up high and go into the cotton bowl and destroy either Ol Miss or Georgia. This is the year that the Big 12 surpasses the SEC and we need to root for OU in the NC game as well as UT in a BCS game. If either team loses and we win I am sure we will jump them in the final season polls which will show once and for all we are the best!

Here is my prediction for the BCS bowl games

NC game: OU vs Florida
Orange: Boston College vs Cincinnati (worst BCS game ever and fitting the two worst teams get to play each other)
Fiesta: Texas vs Ohio St
Sugar: Alabama vs Utah
Rose: Penn St vs USC (2nd best game behind NC game)

Let me know if you disagree.

Not of BCS

Why are we conceding the Fiesta Bowl? Head to head we won and whether Texas likes it or not OU will win and go to the NC and why can’t we lay claim to a BCS bowl. All theBCS bowls were at the Texas gameand the Fiesta was at the OSU game so based what they saw there why give up? I think Gerald should lobby hard behind the scenes and even buy our entire ticket allotment up front and push hard to get in like Kansas did last year. Now should the fans begin the 39-33 campaign? Probably not, but the Athletic Dept. can do lots behind the scences!!!!

Because a conference can only have 2 teams in the BCS. Top 4 teams in final BCS ranking are guaranteed a spot. Why would UT fall out of top 4 without playing another game? Their position guarantees them a spot in the Fiesta Bowl.

When did that rule come in?

The BCS was designed to select the top 2 teams not the top 4.

by techgolf44 on Nov 30, 2008 8:25 PM CST   0 recs

It’s always been there. Just like the automatic non-BCS conference qualifier rule (Utah this year) has always been there. Nothing new.

They will take UT in the Fiesta Bowl because Mack Brown will cry and we (Tech fans) will not have websites, flyovers or crybaby campaigns about the Head to Head WIN over UT.
Tech will go to the Cotton Bowl and play Miss. I know I will be behind my team not crying just going nuts for a 12th win and a top 5 finish.

Go Tech.

We’re not going to the BCS bowl for reasons above as well as:

1) We’re not a traditional powerhouse with traditions like Texas that will travel from all around the country and buy tickets to fill an 80,000 seat facility.
2) We don’t have politicians or deep pocket alums lobbying for our spot in a BCS Bowl.
3) We’re not the media darling that get the publicity from the media like ESPN, Sports Illustrated, talk radio. It just baffles me that ABC gave Mack Brown almost 15 minutes during the OU-OSU game.

We beat Texas and no mention of it whatsoever other than we’re the team that gave Texas their one-loss. I’ll accept our Bowl and will be there to support the team. No way in hell will I cheer on OU…i hope they get trashed by Florida in the NC game. I might root for Texas as all of my friends went there.

Still don't see the rule

Just note sure where it says that the top 4 automatically get in. As long you are in the top 10 it seemed postion didn’t matter except for 1/2 and your in a BCS conference. Anyway, we had a great season and I have seen Ole Miss play in person and on TV and if we are healthy we will dominate them. The Ole Miss folks I know(which are several) know they really don’t want us!!!!!!!!!!!! Wreck’em Tech Keep Leach 39-33!

Not really necessary to go through this

Under automatic qualification section, see paragraphs 5 and 6 (right after para 4 concerning Notre Dame, which doesn’t come into play this year):

5. If any of the 10 slots remain open after application of provisions 1 through 4, and an at-large team from a conference with an annual automatic berth for its champion is ranked No. 3 in the final BCS Standings, that team will become an automatic qualifier, provided that no at-large team from the same conference qualifies for the national championship game.

6. If any of the 10 slots remain open after application of provisions 1 through 5, and if no team qualifies under paragraph No. 5 and an at-large team from a conference with an annual automatic berth for its champion is ranked No. 4 in the final BCS Standings, that team will become an automatic qualifier provided that no at-large team from the same conference qualifies for the national championship game.

According to the Rules for the seletion!

According to the rules for selectin the Big 12 Champion and so forth you can find it at http://www.bcsfootball.org/bcsfb/eligibility.

Under these rules which suck, the following:

1. Head to Head to determine any ties. This solves nothing this year for OU, Texas or Texas Tech

2. This one is often forgotten. Head to Head against common ranked opponenets where Kansas and OSU will play a factor. But unfortunately for TTech, does not break the tie where its based on win loss.

3. BCS standing after week 12 will determine the Big 12 Champion only! Thus OU will be the Big 12 champion because of BCS standing at No. 2

Now comes the Issue of who goes to the Fiesta bowl. Texas fans will be in for a shock, but rankings and or wins losses or other stuff will not previel an automatic berth. There is nothing either Texas or Texas Tech can do to get into the Fiesta Bowl as an automatic bid authough Texas fans wish it.

Under the BCS rules in section labled. Team selection proceedures; The Fiesta Bowl gets to choose who it wants to replace the Big 12 champion when the Big 12 Champion goes to the NCG. Thus for Tech, all hopes ride on OU beating Missouri.

Because the Fiesta bowl gets first choice at replacing OU with either Texas or Texas Tech. I do not think Missouri will be ranked high enough to qualify as a replacement. They will only go if and only if Missouri beats OU. In that case, Texas goes to the NCG and Texas Tech will be sent down to a Tier 2 or 3 bowl.

If OU goes to the NCG, then the Board of the Fiesta Bowl will have an open choice to decide on which team they want as a replacement for OU from the field of the Big 12 which is ranked 12th or better. That is the rule. No need to look at the other sections because both Texas and Texas Tech satisfy the 1st rule for selection of replacement.

Thus the Fiesta Bowl board will choose who they want by personal choice or by which team they think will have the greater financial benefit to the bowl as a whole. Here Texas Tech shines because in all past bowls, Texas Tech has had a very strong following and Tech fans spend more money than Texas fans and have set all sorts of marketing records and sales records not only for the bowls but for the local ecconomy.

Basically, Texas Tech exs and fans have more money than Texas exs and fans as far as disposable income to lavish at the bowl. This primarily has to do with the fact that there is no competition for the money in Lubbock or other items. Also, more Texas Tech grads have higher salaries than those of Texas grads in the open market place. Something we should be pointing out to the Fiesta Bowl people.

But that is the rules. Our fate hangs on the selection of the Fiesta Bowl board otherwise we could be very low down in the pecking order and get a bowl we may not even realize that we would fall so low.

I’m all for having this discussion, as I’m actually learning some things I didn’t know…but where on God’s green earth did you come up with this?

Techsan71

Its in the rules and I provided the link to it. You will find the BCS rules for the replacement team for the Fiesta Bowl when the Big 12 sends a team to the NCG under the heading “Team Selection Proceedures”.

There the only requirement for the Fiesta Bowl Board to select its replacement is that the replacement team be ranked better than 12th in the BCS. Nowhere in the rules does it say that the Fiesta has to take the next BCS ranked team. It simply says that the team has to be ranked better than 12th.

This is why Kansas went to the BCS last year when they were ranked lower than Missouri at the time of selection of bowls!!!!

But Shouldn't we get a BCS invite anyway?

That’s a good point. We need to play well in any bowl we get invited to, but I still beg the question, shouldn’t we get the BCS invite anyway? Since we beat Texas in the regular conference game and Sooners are no more in the picture for an at large BCS birth, don’t we beat Texas out in the tie breaker and earn the BCS bowl if the system works correctly? I think we have a legitimate claim to a BCS bowl this year. If done correctly, a good campaign educating the BCS decision makers and football fans around the nation about the situation might actually help us this time because we actually beat out Texas and therefore should get a BCS birth anyway. I think we need to go on a self promotion offensive and make a real good case for getting what is legitimately ours: a BCS bowl birth. Now after that if they still invite Texas, Cotton bowl ain’t a bad thing and we will still go there in full force and with all our fans but why should be give up the BCS bowl claim when we are the once that qualify ahead of Texas this year?

by jef on Dec 1, 2008 11:00 AM CST   0 recs

Jef

The BCS rules say that no more than 2 team from any BCS conference shall go to the BCS. and Only 1 from non BCS unless there is a lack of BCS schools to give 2 non BCS schools a birth.

But Either Texas or Texas Tech can get the second spot in the BCS.

Oklahoma in the NCG seals the First BCS spot.

Thus Texas and Texas Tech must fight to get the other spot which will be the Fiesta.

It is possible for Tech to get selected as a replacement team for say an SEC team the way Kansas was selected. But its not a guarantee.

by Pablo M on Dec 2, 2008 3:23 AM CST   0 recs

Followup

Reason why not guarantee is because last year, Big 12 did not have a team in the NCG.

Also it would mean that the SEC did not have a team ranked better than 18th after the SEC championship game. Thus realistically, not possible.

Thus Oklahoma sealed up spot 1 and the team to go the the Fiesta gets spot 2. The rest of the teams gets the Tier 2 or lower bowls.

Actually, Threre is a rule that could work for the Red Raiders and for Texas

Should Florida beat Alabama but not get better than #3 in the BCS giving Oklahoma and Texas the #1 abd #2 spot, then Texas Tech would go to the Fiesta Bowl.

Highly unlikely, but one more option.
