Oklahoma State - Behind the Numbers
Like many of you, I have not had the opportunity to watch much Oklahoma State football this season. So last night, I took some time to review the box scores from their games in detail and looked at the play-by-play from a couple of their games. I made some observations that I think provide some insight into how Texas Tech should play OSU this weekend. You can read them after the break.
Observations regarding the OSU offense.
The write ups by Texas bloggers all commented on how good a team OSU really is, and that the 4 point win in Austin was extremely hard fought. I have to admit, I have been skeptical of OSU as a team. As I mentioned in a response earlier this week, they seem to be streaky to me. Perhaps that is because they are reliant on the big play offensively. When they aren't getting them, things start to melt down. I think that containing the big play - especially against the run - is the key to Tech winning this game. The battle of the trenches just became about 10x as important for Tech in this game in my eyes. The play in the Tech interior d-line will be very important, as it will be their job to plug up the gaps, make a few tackles, and allow the linebackers to make plays downhill. Again this week, containment by the defensive ends will be important, as Robinson is a legitimate running threat (despite fewer carries this year), and I think Hunter would prefer to run in the open field versus between the tackles. According to dedfischer over at Tortilla Retort, the OSU offensive line is pretty good. So our defensive line will have their hands full.
As for the OSU passing game, Tech plays its best pass defense in man coverage. I think that we need to stick to that plan and trust our corners to make plays. Trying to double up on Bryant with a safety opens Tech up to a breakaway run by a team that thrives on that ability. I don't think we should concede to their bread and butter. Make Robinson beat you with his arm in tight coverage. He doesn't have the accuracy of McCoy and is prone to mistakes. Pettigrew is a big target and a potential threat across the middle. We need our linebackers to make good tackles and our defensive ends to keep him busy at the line of scrimmage.
Observations regarding the OSU defense.
I wanted to know how teams performed against OSU versus their average performance. I have included a table below of the conference games:

If the D-line can play as well as they did last week, we should be able to stop the run.
Also seeing OSU’s pass rush is not as good as Texas University’s, I could see Graham having a day like he did against Kansas State. In that game, I was amazed at how long he had back there.
My main fear, in this game, is that we will give up one or two big plays that will hurt us. Bryant probably would not have dropped the passes that Shipley did. If OSU burns us, it will be a long night.
This is one we should win, but in past years lost. That fact alone has me losing sleep at night!

I'm still not sure how
M. Williams, B. Duncan and Bird are going to be huge on Saturday. I still haven’t figured out how McNeill will play these guys (i.e. leave Bird on the bench and bring in a safety?). I thinking that unless OSU says otherwise, McNeill plays it safe.

If I were DC
I would play the base 4-3, but use man coverage on the corners and cover 1 over the top to help out deep. Maybe show some cover 2 and slide a safety up late. Maybe use some blitzes to keep their OL guessing and steer the play where we want it to go, and to force Pettigrew to handle our DT’s without a double team. At least until OSU proves that we need more pass protection. Like I said above, I think if we can stop a couple of drives early, we can force OSU to play from behind. If they start needing to pass to catch up, I like our defense to get pressure and cause problems.
OSU’s going to get some yards on the ground. We just need to keep Hunter’s numbers somewhere near human. We need a big first half again this week from our defense. This is not a game that I want to have to try and come from behind in. OSU will keep it on the groud and eat clock like Javorsky Lane at McDonalds if they are up by more than 3 points in the second half. We need the play of our D-line will set up our LBs to make the plays they need to. If they not able to tie up things in the middle and and contain long enough for help to arrive, Hunter has blockers down field and we’re in for a long night. We’ve got the talent up front and the attitude to do it. We just need to execute and hope there is enough gas left in the tank after last week.

You don't think
we see Howard as much this week? I like your thoughts, but then the best way to implement that would be to keep the Joker package on the sideline unless it’s a true passing down.

Re-reading that post, I seriously need to proof read better. I think we should reserve the joker for 3rd and long mostly, maybe if they are in a 2nd and 15 type situation, or if we are up by a couple of TDs. Otherwise, I think we concede too much in run defense.

In case anyone is interested
OSU has a little trouble converting in the red zone; however, over half of their TDs are scored from outside th red zone. We have to stop the big play.

I still don't
know why this game doesn’t have me very worried. I really, honestly think OSU has a great football team. Balanced, fast, strong. You name it.
But when I look at how this Tech team has matured this season and really seems to rally and focus when it’s needed…I just smell an arse whipping. Our offense is clicking at the right time of the year – crunch time.
