Well, did it ever occur to any of the media, that the SEC West is not all that great?
Anyone as suprised as me to see Alabama to be the last of the BIG 12 and SEC colleges listed?

I’ve been saying that for a while, especially when Alabama had a couple nailbiters against average teams.
Also, I know Tech lost big and at the end of the season, but this SOS is the kind of thing that voters should really be looking at when they make their not-so-objective votes. It needs to be noted that Tech’s SOS is 26th in the country. This after everyone rags on them for their weak non-conference schedule. Compare that to the four non-Big12 teams ahead of them in at least one of the polls (all polls not exactly the same)…
26 Tech (bad loss to 11-1 #2 OU; wins over 11-1 #3 UT, 9-3 #14 OkSt.) Pretty impressive wins by any standard. Late loss hurt.
28 Florida (pretty close, so I would give them the benefit of the doubt with decent teams every week; best wins #16 Georgia and #24 Florida St.; but they lost to an 8-4 Miss. team); if they beat #1 Alabama, they will definitely deserve the jump in the polls…
33 USC (big wins over horrible teams with loss to 8-4 Oregon St; only notable wins over #10 Ohio St. and #19 Oregon); obviously not as impressive resume as Tech. Scheduled game on day of other confereces championships to yell “Look at us, we’re relevant and need attention!” over a bad UCLA team…
59 Penn St. (another team with loss to 8-4 team; notable win over #10 Ohio St. and other “good by default of being in weak conference teams” #22 Northwestern and #21 Michigan St.)…
72 Utah (good wins over TCU and BYU, but who else have they played?); Do give them credit for being undefeated, but over clearly inferior competition.
It will be very interesting to see how far Alabama drops if they lose to Florida on Saturday. Alabama’s only win over currently ranked opponent was #16 Georgia. Their non-conference games are almost as weak as Tech’s with Ark. St., Tulane, Clemson, and Western Kentucky. Late losses are always worse, right? With all the good 1 loss teams, they should fall to the bottom of the pack according to logic.
And not that the rankings even matter for Tech much anymore since they are virtually locked out of the BCS, but this is how the next rankings should look if politics were set aside and logic were applied equally to all teams (as the computers try to do):
If Alabama loses to Florida, (assuming OU beats Mizzou):
1 OU
2 Florida
3 UT (unless we used UT’s head-to-head argument and drop them to 4, but I won’t go there right now)
4 Texas Tech
5 USC
6/7 Penn St. / Alabama (depending how much Alabama’s SOS is boosted by playing Florida)
8 Utah

Nine ACC teams are in the top 20 in SOS and all 12 teams are in the top 35. But somehow, Baylor who played OU, UT, Tech, and OSU is 5th? Even the SOS rankings are BS.

I agree
the bizarre rankings for the ACC are the canary in the coal mine for this statistic

Duke’s hardest games were
15 Georgia Tech
22 Northwestern
25 Virginia Tech
They didn’t even play 2 of the best teams in their own conference in Florida State and Boston College.
plus they had a game against Div 2 (or whatever it’s called) James Madison which should hurt the SOS.
How does all this add up to the second hardest schedule in the country?

SOS
Is determined by Defensive effort added to Offensive output then they throw in rankings.
Thus teams that have higher defensive played games are given higher scores than teams whose defense gives up lots of points.
Thus a team which scores well but holds teams scoring against them down plus playing ranked teams gives them a boost which is how Baylor got where they are.
In the ACC, this shows up in defense battles because the ACC sucks on offense as a general rule. Thus you get a higher number for having what looks like a good defense.
Thus the SOS calculations were originally created to boost SEC and ACC standings.
What hurts Big 12 overall, is that the Big 12 has extremely powerful offenses with defenses struggling to contain those power offenses.
But should the Big 12 next year have lots of lop sided scores especially against other conferences, then the Big 12 will see another boost in SOS.
It was SOS and Offensive scoring that gives Tech the 4th ranking in the Computers in the BCS

HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!! LOOK RIGHT IN FRONT OF ALABAMA
UTAH!!!!!!!!!!! They have a legit argument to be number 1 after seeing this stat. How could you have 2 undefeated teams with strength of schedule ranks 72 and 73, and the easier strength of schedule team be 1 and the other be 6???
