Cotton Bowl Rematch?

I know somebody mentioned this once before.... but things are different now.  If Bama loses to Florida, does anyone know if they will drop to the Cotton Bowl?  The only reason I want to know is because I watched that game in '05, and have never been more pissed, or felt more robbed, for whatever reason than I was after that game.  Maybe it was the wobbly dead duck of a kick that the ghost of Bear Bryant willed over the crossbar.  Or was it the flat performance of our offense in that game?  Or was it the bad calls I remember?  Whatever, we lost.  I would love to redeem that loss.  Revenge is sweet.  Maybe we get some?  Anybody looked into this?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

I think

Alabama would have to fall to 3rd in conference standings to meet us in the Cotton Bowl. I’m not sure, just a guess. But, like you, I would L O V E a rematch. I was at that game too (my face was the sad one plastered over the screen after we lost!), and I still have nightmares about that kick. I swear it didn’t go over the crossbar…anyway, I would be really excited for a rematch! It’d be a great game.

That kick....

That was nonsense. Whatever that guy’s name was that kicked it…. He is the luckiest sob of all time.

Go Tech!!!

Right after that game

… I stumbled into Wal-Mart wearing my TTU sweatshirt. A lady from Aggie Land began to give me a hard time.

I was able to point her to the scoreboard of the Tech/A&M that year (56-17) and punctuated with, “What bowl did Aggie go to this year? Oh, that’s right! You all didn’t qualify for a bowl this year. Ooh, sorry!”

by Red Raider in South GA on Dec 1, 2008 5:20 PM CST   0 recs

I won't forget...

…the fact that the Alabama receiver’s knee was down behind the line of scrimmage but still managed to score on the play. Thought that is what happened while at the game and then the fact was sadly confirmed by replays at home.
Other than that, though, Tech played like crap so I can’t harp on one play that didn’t go our way.

by TracySaulRulz on Dec 1, 2008 5:37 PM CST   0 recs

Yeah

I saw that too, from the other end of the field. If I could have known that play would be the major difference in that game, I would rushed up to Leach, grabbed his red flag and thrown it myself!

The winner of Florida/Alabama will go to the National Championship, most likely while the loser will probably be Sugar Bowl bound. Either one will have a better record than the 3rd place team, Georgia, at 9-3. They will go to the Capital One Bowl. So it would be pretty impossible to have a TT/Alabama Cotton rematch. I’m still waiting for the Cotton Bowl to pick up the tab for my tv that I kicked when that dead duck sailed through the uprights. Damn that pissed me off.

The 4th SEC team will go to Cotton, which should be Ole Miss. Even though it’s not the same as the Alabama Cotton Bowl rematch, we did play them a few years ago in a home/away series. I’m pretty sure Tech won both of those over Eli Manning, so they would be the ones looking for revenge. We just have to be sure to not be down on ourselves for getting the shaft from the bcs. Remember when we went into the Holiday a few years ago and ripped Cal a new one after they were in a similar situation.

I was at the Tech/miss game in Lubbock...

We rattled Eli Manning to no end with our EEEEEEllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiii chanting. He was visibly rattled b/c of it and it was very satisfying. Every incomplete pass….. eeeeeelllllllliiiiiiiiii, EEEEEEELLLLLLIIIIIIII, it was awesome

Go Tech!!!

by jwhitettu on Dec 1, 2008 6:05 PM CST   0 recs

that chant...

…is ingenious in its simplicity.

by djollie111 on Dec 1, 2008 7:07 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

How about this logic… Tech will beat Mississippi because Tech already beat UT, and Ole Miss qb was not good enough to start for UT. It’s quite simple.

We can get the Cotton Bowl rocking with
JJJEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVAAAAAAAAAAANNNNN.

I don’t know if it sounds as good as the Eli chant, but surely Tech will have an advantage of fans there to make it happen.

Tech/Ole Miss in Oxford

I was @ the game in Oxford and that was the nite that Eli had one if not his best game passing(444yds). Only trouble BJ(freakin) Symons had the 2nd best game passing in NCAA history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ole Miss could not stop Wes Welker!!!! It was awesome. So anyway, living in Mississippi if we can’t go a BCS (which is totally wrong) then smacking Ole Miss would be jsut fine in the Cotton Bowl. I even heard Houston Nutt say on his radio show tonite that if they play Tech they will have to get pressure on Harrell and he felt they could possibly have some success. But he said they only hoped to slow us down because he knew we would get completions. They also joked about the poor cornerbacks who would have to cover Crabtree. Anyway, good luck Ole Miss on getting pressure on Harrell without sending 8!!!! Wreck’em Tech Keep Leach

by techgolf44 on Dec 1, 2008 7:43 PM CST   0 recs

The Eli chant was very condescending....

Like a scolding mother scraping her finger at her naughty child. eeeelllllliiiiiiiiiiii…….EEEEELLLLLLLIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!! It was so funny. My current roommate and I were both there and it still makes us laugh when we watch him play for NY.

Go Tech!!!

by jwhitettu on Dec 1, 2008 7:48 PM CST   0 recs

then when we beat them...

we can make obnoxious comments about how we are CLEARLY better than Florida, since they lost to OleMiss at home!

by kevinkinsler on Dec 1, 2008 9:40 PM CST   0 recs

OLE MISS DEFENSE

Miss defense is damn good, and getting better as season progressed,. If we play them ,,their defense will be comparable to Texass or OU. Their offense is pretty good ,but their def. will kick our ass if we are not up to snuff,. I’m saying this way early but, I’m really worried there going to kick our ass. We cant afford to lay another EGG on national TV. Leach and Ruff better be schemming right now—with them not even being ranked,it will be hard to get this team ready, especially the way they played the last 2 weeks. chris on December 1st, 2008 9:50 am WROTE
The real bummer: losing to an "inferior" unranked 8-4 Ole Miss team in the Cotton Bowl. Tech will have to play WELL to beat Ole Miss, which won at Florida and has nothing to lose/everything to gain. Once again, Houston Nutt has taken what should have been a 10-win team and squeezed eight wins out of it. Ole Miss will be seriously jacked to knock off a Top 10 Tech team. This is Houston Nutt’s dream scenario. He excels as the underachieving underdog who pulls the big upset Jan 2. Look out Tech fans! You’ve been warned,
Another Arkansas Raider—-thanks Chris I still cannot believe any bowl especially the Cotton would match Tech#7 with an unranked team…GOOD LUCK TECH WE NEED THIS WIN BAD

can't wait

I can’t wait.I hope the stadium is full of TECH support in Dallas lol.And I am already having day dreams of the first kickoff in 09.“WRECK EM”

by slycanyon on Dec 1, 2008 10:39 PM CST   0 recs

Dr. Mark

Which Ole Miss team have you been watching? I live in Jackson, MS and have seen them in person. They are a decent defense but in no way comparable to Texas and especially OU. They have some decent linemen but they very first thing from Ole MIss fans and Coach Nutt(last nite) is that they are very, very concerned about their defensive backs!!!!!!!!! Don’t let the Houston Nutt hype get out. Yes we must play our game but I promise if we play like we have most of the year we will win. And don’t forget HOME GAME in Dallas!!!!!! Wrech’em Tech Keep Leach

How about some Red Raider revenge?

Independence Bowl 1986
Ole Miss 20 TT 17

Independence Bowl 1998
Ole Miss 35 TT 18

We’re 0 for 2 against the Rebels in Bowl games.

Why are you people giving up on the Fiesta bowl?

Texas Tech still has a shot at going to the Fiesta. Unless you make such a noise that the Fiesta will ignore Tech all together and take Texas.

Tech has equal shot at the Fiesta Bowl with Texas. Its a matter of choice with the Fiesta Bowl. Both Texas and Texas Tech qualify as a replacement team. There is nothing in the rules which forces the Fiesta to take Texas over Texas Tech.

So if We demand that we are a better team and have the head to head with Texas, we have a legit argument to go to the Fiesta.

Stop being negative and acting like whipped dogs. We have just as much of a right to the Fiesta as Texas. Possibly more.

by Pablo M on Dec 2, 2008 8:16 AM CST   0 recs

I don't think we have a shot...

at the Fiesta. There is a chance, but it’s like a 5% chance. I’ve been thru denial, then anger, now I’m in acceptance and reconciliation mode. Sorry.

Go Tech!!!

by jwhitettu on Dec 2, 2008 9:10 AM CST   0 recs

and i'm damn sure not

apologizing to ut/ou fans for the things i thought and wrote about them.

by Plano Jeff on Dec 2, 2008 11:48 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

The reality is that yes, the Fiesta can take either Texas or Tech if OU wins. The other reality is that there is almost no way any bowl game, regardless of head to head, would bypass Texas for Tech at this point in time. If Tech had a long history of traveling in droves compared to UT (we don’t) or if we had more of a national fan base compared to UT (we don’t) they would consider it. I’m sure their bowl rep’s will say all the politically correct things about Tech and all that if asked, but you can pretty much ink the Longhorns into that one if OU wins.

by Tech92 on Dec 2, 2008 12:27 PM CST   0 recs

Actually the Fiesta can't pick

If Texas finishes either #3 or #4 then they are in and we have no recourse because the BCS bowls can only take 2 teams from each conference. So if OU wins their in the NC game and Texas goes Fiesta if they finish #3/4. I didn’t realize this either until 2 nites ago. I always thought the BCS was about the top 2 but it is not it is about the top 4. If Texas somehow dropped to #5 then the Fiesta could still pick us and then I think it is a toss-up because the I think the Fiesta does like us but who knows. Wreck’em Tech Keep Leach

by techgolf44 on Dec 2, 2008 1:38 PM CST   0 recs

Man what a bunch of lies are being spread!

The Fiesta does not have to take the top 4 as a few suggested! That is a lie! I will call anyone here who continues that line a liar!

The BCS rules for Team Selection is there for anyone to read. The only requirement for the replacement team is that they are ranked better than 12th in the BCS. If there is not a team better than 12th then 18th if still no team is ranked 18th in the BCS then they can take a team outside the conference.

Thus both Texas and Texas Tech are legit replacement teams. Its all on who does the Fiesta want.

After all, Kansas was a replacement team and was taken over a higher ranked Missouri last year.

Geez, People learn to read and know the rules!

by Pablo M on Dec 3, 2008 5:49 AM CST   0 recs

Followup

The issue is which bowl and when they have the pick to get a replacement team. Because the Fiesta will lose its champion to the NCG, it gets to pick a replacement for its bowl.

The Fiesta gets first pick this go around first. Which means that they can pick who every they want as long as that team fits the requirement for replacement. Which is a team that is ranked 12th or better in the BCS and from the Big 12.

The other items matter not! That is the rules! My God people stop being ignorant!
