Potential Fallout over Leach Drama?

I understand the back and forth in contract negotiations.  But has anyone thought about the potential fallout on recruiting on all this drama?  There are several outstanding recruits, including Rex Burkhead from Plano, that have Tech in their finalists.  But I am not sure, if I was a recruit, that I would be too excited being surrounded by all this uncertainty.  You can bet your life that the other schools competing against Tech are using this for all its worth to have the recruit scratch Tech off their list and commit to them.  I would hope that the lead Pirate has thought of this.  Even if he has his coaching staff staying in constant contact with the recruits you can be the situation is causing many to consider committing or even de committing if they have already listed Tech as their choice.  Your thoughts?

I can’t imagine what kind of positive effect it could have. Even if tomorrow’s newspapers have pictures of Myers and Leach in a big man hug with signed papers in hand, this over-played drama could only hurt this year’s recruiting and maybe the next few. At the very least, a recruit will have a hard time being confident that the coaching staff will be the same when he graduates as when he started. Are any of us confident about who will be here in 4-5 years? I’m sure not.

This is a nightmare for recruiting in my opinion.

I wish he would just sign already. Or not sign at this point. Jeez, diva.

Go Tech!!!

If he doesn't sign

then we have a problem. The deal is for 5 years. Even though we know it will be renegoitiated again in 3 years, recruits will see 5 years and know that he will at least be around for their tenure.

We are a program on the rise. We’re expanding the stadium, winning lots of games, getting lots of attention. Our coach’s contract was extended. It’s as much assurance as they can get anywhere. That’s what recruits want in a school if they have any further aspirations.

In the short term, it may have delayed commitment from 1 or 2 guys considering Tech, but if they haven’t committed by this point, they were holding out for a better deal anyway.

Help Yourself

Agreed, but if we had an pro-active AD we would offer a bit more $ on the front end and make the buyout clause a little more painful for a possible suitor…its how the big boys do it.

I agree

Something is definately wrong with our behavior lately. I’m really surprised with such a great year that we had it’s ending like this. What a disaster. First not getting into the BCS, then Leach and the administration playing games with his future as our head coach and lastly Graham not being invited to the Heisman ceremony. What a slap in the face by the college football commnunity. I guess success comes with a high price after all. Personally, I feel like the recruiting will be fine once Leach gets his ego in check and signs the contract. What Tech is offering him is way more than fair. If he continues to shop the market next year..Fire his ass! Tech is better than this and deserves more respect.

This must be the karmic inverse

for being national media darlings for a those weeks after the UT win. Going down the list:

1) Most successful squad in the program’s history gets left out in the cold by the Big 12 and BCS in favor of big names and big money.
2) Leach shops himself around to no less than three other programs, then holds out on negotiations with Tech (taking a break for awards week? Puh-lease).
3) Scholarship player gets arrested by the Feds on drug charges.
4) Best QB in school history and one of those most prolific passers ever can’t pull enough Heisman votes to even get invited to the same ceremony as a guy he beat.

Did I miss anything else that belongs in the News Cycle From Hell?

4 star OL recruit Joel Gray who had "committed" to Tech

Took an official visit to UCLA. http://texastech.scout.com/ Of course, I don’t know ALL of the story because I refuse to PAY to read the rest of the article.

Correct me here because I don't dabble in recruiting

Don’t Mack and Big Game Bob yank the offers when a “committee” takes another official visit elsewhere?

JUST A THOUGHT

I FOR ONE would start interviewing new coaches. Every year that coach Quixote starts his yearly sojourn of AD"s across the country,Tech ought to start interviewing new coach’s. As dumb as this sounds, we may actually find a real diamond in the rough. Turn the tables on his stupid ass, make him look stupid for a change. …… Yes it does effect recruiting, really gives other coaches plenty of fodder. MAYBE WE CAN GET MEYERS TO SPRING FOR A WINDMILL ON THE NEW EAST SIDE ADDITION—-JUST A THOUGHT

Leach Myers Saga

I think $2.4 million is a good offer for a coach who has never won the Big XII, let alone the division in 8 years. I think by delaying this process of accepting or rejecting the offer, Leach is burning up precious goodwill and political capital. Not only this, we might lose out on recruits in a year that should have been our best recruiting year ever. When your coach tries to go shopping for himself instead of strengthening recruitment, its a bad sign. Hope this drama is over with before the end of this week, or else the date with Ole Miss for Cotton Bowl won’t be pretty.

At this point, I could care less if Leach strokes out over Harrell not being invited to NY, parachutes from the Eiffel Tower, swims with the dolphins, or falls bassakwards into a Shallowater mud slop.

Just give a solid yay or nay. That’s all I care about right now. Our football program is much bigger than Leach, so if we need to go to plan b, let’s get cracking. He has a massive hand in our offense, but if he leaves guess what? The players can’t go with him. There are other capable coaches out there, so let’s not assume all is lost if this jacka** continues his standard MO.

If I’m on the BOR, I probably start asking what it will take to get rid of him and find someone who acts like they want to be here. Enough already. I don’t care if he’s in NY, London or Bermuda. That extension ain’t that hard to read. You either want it or you don’t. I don’t believe there is a ton of negotiation room with the numbers.

GOOD POSTS

JEF- Tech92—- I had to live through this kind of drama back in the late 60’s and early 70’s with then coaches JIM CARLEN and then STEVE SLOAN. Both were good coaches in their days at Tech. I think two of the best coaches at Texas Tech . In fact ,the last time Tech was ranked #7 in the nation was with Sloan and Rodney Allison at QB. Both of these coaches had a wandering eye and left Tech , using Tech as a stepping stone. I think david McWilliams stayed one year after they left. ,Carlen left for south Carolina,Sloan to Ole miss[wanting Alabama job] and McWilliams to Texas, Both McW and Sloan were fired within a year or two at their new jobs and Carlen i can’t recall,-My point is Tech sat back passively and got F##### The best place for LEACH is. at Tech I dont personally care what happens to LEACH if he leaves, I just want what is fair for Tech. This kind of ploy does no good for either side. Shit or get off the pot, The school is right, the money is right,so commit or let us make a move in a positive direction.

Myers

I think Myers is under Leach’s skin with his ‘wait til’ the end of the year’ crap. Myers is a loon, and I think he has been a huge hindrance in getting this done. If Gundy and Mangino are worth aroun 2.4MM, then up the offer to ML and get a large buyout clause. Any yes, if I didn’t think Hance would go buy ‘green’ light bulbs with my donation, I would cheerfully make an offering to go directly to ML’s pocketbook.
Mike likes Tech, but hates dealing with a douchebag….do you blame him?

I think your definitely right, some Tech alums and myself were talking last week, and they think it mostly stemmed from Leach talking to other schools after he signed his last contract, ,,Meyer’s is old school Tech and that did not set well with him then, or now. I can’t blame all this on Meyers though, they have bent over backwards for the football program, I’m not a big fan of Meyers,[ although he is a frat brother] ,,but he is dedicated to Tech,. I’m behind Leach,as are most alum for the time being, IF the money is really there, and he’s [-Meyers] -not paying him thats one thing, but if we really dont have it ,thats another. I tend to think we offered all we could. I dont see Bailey,Hance or involved alums holding back on this one.

I still don't understand our financial situation....

How has our athletic budget finished up in the red 2 out of the last 3 years?
Somehow, we’re planning and spending more than we bring in… Who’s responsible for that? Myers?
We couldn’t “afford” to work something out with ML before the season, but we thought we could do it after the season? In what way did we think we’d be in a better position to do it after the season?
While I obviously don’t understand the details behind all of this, it just doesn’t sound like very effective management to me….
Personally, I think the failure to do something earlier caused more of a rift between Myers and Leach. And it certainly didn’t help in restraining Leach’s eye toward other opportunities…

Synopsis

Mike is the perfect fit for Tech, we couldn’t do better with almost anyone else. The impetus was on Gerald to let him know that, by any means necessary. I know Gerald is the one that is credited for bringing Mike on board, we can’t let him be the reason he doesn’t stay.
My first games at Tech were watching Jerry Moore’s anemic offense and Top 10 Defense. Mike has changed the way I look at all football, if you aren’t trying to attack….what the hell are you doing. I personally hope that Mike doesn’t accept the first proposal and we have to give a bit more and get the large buyout that will make us all feel better.

I agree but,

It’s not entirely up to Meyers on the amount Leach is paid, the school- Tech- pays a base salary and some bonus perks, that is mostly Meyers, the rest is paid by alumni. It’s basically what the alums will guarantee, Keep the alums with deep pockets happy and you get your raises,so it is not all Meyers. Leach is not the greatest in the past to attend large alum functions,Dallas,Houston, Meyers , or some rep from Tech ath. has to go instead to appease them. When Leach says he wants more cash, he’s talking to alum, not Meyers , I think some deep pockets balked this spring, not much an AD can do.

by DR.MARK on Dec 11, 2008 9:42 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think his base salary this year around 300k and some perks. the rest of his salary comes outside Tech indirectly, i think total this year at about 1.85 mil. ,,,public knowledge, can;t remember off hand

Honest

I am willing to confess that I don’t know how his (and other coach’s) compensation looks on paper. What I do know is that Montford and Schmidly were fantastic at raising money for projects and bettering Tech…..Tech grew more during their years together unlike any other time. I don’t want Mike to be that great at schmoozing alum’s….he would be the next Auburn coach if he was. Is it that the money isn’t there or that it would require Gerald and others to have to work for it. I personally think Mike is worth the extra effort. I approach what I do for a living very aggressively, and I expect the Tech bureaucrats that we have to do the same.

I have changed my mind

Early this season I thought if Leach leaves, we’ll fall back to mediocrity, so I didn’t want to see him go. However, I see that it is clear that Leach is leaving at some point soon as the right position opens up.

To really become a sustaining better program, we need a coach that is committed to the university. You can see what a coach can do with time (e.g., Leach), but I don’t want Tech to be a place where coaches build up the program to almost success and use the success to move on to the better school/position, i.e., I don’t want Tech football to just be successful every 7-10 years. Therefore, I think a key decision in hiring the next coach should be ties to the school and/or the region, something to motivate a coach to stay even if a bigger program offers a competitive or better deal.

So now, I just as soon see Leach move on, b/c he obviously wants to, and for Tech to move to the next coach that can hopefully build and maintain Tech football as a top-tier competitor. I don’t believe Leach is the only coach that can do this.

On a separate note, here is an article about Leach that appears on site probably not seen by the majority: http://www.law.com/jsp/tx/index.jsp

See you

at the Poulan Weedeater bowl…
There are others that can be as successful, why look when we can keep Mike if we are pro-active?
