KTXT taken off the air by administration ...

I know it's not directly TTU sports relevant. But I rather enjoyed the sports talk and the music. I just thought people should know ...

"Representatives with Texas Tech’s Student Media Department announced the student-run radio station KTXT-FM went off the air today for good.

Citing budget issues and the shift of media to a more online presence, officials said use of the station’s FCC license will be turned over to Tech’s educational station, KOHM-FM.

No plans for use of the 88.1 FM frequency or the station’s Web site have been announced."

Yup. I am rather upset about this.

It’s just more bad news out of the university. It’s like someone came out and said, “Let’s make December a bad month for Tech”

by kayakyakr on Dec 10, 2008 10:50 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow

That’s a shame. I remember listening to that station from my early childhood days outside of Lubbock (that and FMX..talk about longevity) and knew quite a few of the DJs when I was at Tech.
This is one of the times when I’m not so happy that we feel the need to spend untold millions on a stadium expansion but can’t raise enough money to keep something as great as a student-run radio station open.

Shame. Shame.

I’m so tired of bad news. I hope the $ wasn’t diverted for Leach’s contract. I loved 88.1 the couch. wtf? What’s going on?!

Go Tech!!!

CRAP!

That’s so depressing. I worked there in 2002-2003, and for a short time (summer 02) had my own punk show called the Tuesday Night Riot. Until I got fired for not showing up for meetings.

I went out to Lubbock for the Baylor game, and after the game I walked over to the Student Media Building and stood outside and dialed 806-742-KTXT and hoped a DJ would answer, and let me in to take a last look around. I saw the phone light flashing through the window but apparently, the station was on autopilot.

Keep it Locked to the Left!

I grew up on a ranch in the

middle of freaking nowhere. That was where I was introduced to so many great artists and alternative scenes. Though I am still very conservative, I like to think that radio station had an influence on my tolerance of ALL walks of life and showed me there were all types in this world after having access of nothing but country radio in the sticks were I was raised. Conservative as I am, I still believe colleges are a place where young people should have learning experiences and explore other ways of seeing things. I hope that our U isn’t being being stripped of any more opportunities for the kids to express their creativity. These types of programs(88.1) give avenues to our “creative” types to learn how to communicate and express their thoughts and opinions.

That’s a great story. Should email this to the university president, or Dr. Shonrock, the man directly above those responsible for shutting down the station.

by kayakyakr on Dec 11, 2008 8:42 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I just got off the phone with Susan Petersen...

Director of Student Media. She says she is solely responsible. She was very very nice and answered all my questions..Equipment maintenance, and on-going repairs are to blame for years. Plus, the radio station has not sold one bit of advertising this entire year. She said that student media inherited the station from mass com in 2001, b/c mass com was going broke. Because of the station. Now student media is broke, and she had to stop the bleeding.

Go Tech!!!

by jwhitettu on Dec 11, 2008 8:45 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Shonrock is not responsible, but he is, as far as I’m aware, above those responsible. I may be wrong in my knowledge of campus hierarchies, though, I’m getting that connection second-hand. I’m doubtful that appealing to those directly responsible will produce any results.

by kayakyakr on Dec 11, 2008 8:46 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

She knows everyone is dissapointed.

But says that her hands are tied unless the alumni come through with a lot of $$$ in a hurry. Also the DT brings in $$$ and supports the station. Well, b/c of hard times, this year the DT sold less advertising, = less $$$= no $$ for KTXT. She said it’s unfortunate, but there is nothing she can do. Oh, and don’t try to call Dr. Shonrock about this, b/c his secretary Rita will just redirect you to ms. Petersen

Go Tech!!!

Shonrock

I have to agree not the most trustworthy person at Tech.

by ST04 on Dec 16, 2008 11:33 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You bring up an interesting point Jeff

I’ve been wondering in the last 24 hours if indeed the cut had to do with something other than just budget cuts. Lord knows there was a “leftist slant” to a couple of the conversation shows. I really hope that an hour or two a week of commentary did not somehow convince administration officials to ditch the great music, sports talk, and concert attractions that KTXT bought. And I agree with you Jeff, colleges are supposed to be venues of open discussion, ESPECIALLY a large public university like Texas Tech. I’m so angry about this whole thing.

There’s a petition in the works, I’ll try and keep everyone updated on it. For now you can join the facebook group “SAVE KTXT 88.1 FM”. It’s open to everyone so please join.

by maliath on Dec 11, 2008 12:04 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I just joined the facebook group. Shutting down KTXT 88.1 is a complete travesty! This station I can say changed my taste in music entering college. I was a top 40 kid coming out of high school and this station certainly contributed in opening up my horizon. It’s a darn shame it shut down with no warning and no reason. I will help with whatever to keep this great station open!! Maybe Leach will accept the contract and give a kickback to the station..

by WreckerRaider on Dec 11, 2008 6:49 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Budgetary Issues?

What is the major expense? Electricity to broadcast the signal? Why not partner with the Wind Energy Research group to provide the electricity? They just received a big grant. The task of providing continuous power a that capacity would be a great learning experience for them and would help the station.

by NM99 on Dec 11, 2008 7:05 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah.

They don’t pay the DJ’s. What’s the cost?

Go Tech!!!

by jwhitettu on Dec 11, 2008 8:24 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was under the impression that the fee from the FCC is next to nothing for the airspace. Also under the impression that they don’t pay royalties to anyone because of that whole indie music thing. Unless the department budget is that small, in which case that seems to be more a problem with the department’s budget.

by kayakyakr on Dec 11, 2008 8:44 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Regardless of the reasons, the Student Media people handled this poorly

This was my last semester at Tech, and i have been dj’ing Getting Harder, the metal show, for the past three years. The way they went about this was pretty sneaky and underhanded in my opinion. Yesterday, at 2:30 they called the station manager and told him what was happening ten minutes before they pulled the plug. One of our other exec staffers was on the air at that point. By the time I got there, they had painted over the KTXT logo on the wall in our lobby and were shooing everybody out. They had threatened to change the locks and the entry codes before anybody even had a chance to get their cd’s out of there.

They are shutting down a Texas Tech institution that is 50+ years old. They can say that we weren’t holding up our end but I would be doing my show until midnight and see our exec staff up there working their asses off to get new shows or listening to cd’s to put on the air. And I would seriously like to see a college radio station that generates a lot of revenue. To me the excuse of maintenance of equipment is laughable. Most of the maintenance was carried out by people on our staff, and most of the hardware in the broadcasting booth hasn’t been upgraded since around 1999 when we were the first station in Lubbock to broadcast on the internet.

They need to look long and hard at the cultural implications this has for the surrounding area. There are now no local fm stations that are not owned by Clear Channel, effectively homogenizing what the people of this city listen to. Why couldn’t they have a sit-down with our staff and let them know how bad it was? I had talked with our Program Director the week before and he said everything was going great. The College Music Journal has ranked KTXT in their top 10 consistently.

KTXT was a place for the outsiders of Texas Tech to gather and have our own little influence on the University and Lubbock. For lots of us, we were moving 6+ hours away from home and found a great group of people to hang out with. Through KTXT, we brought in hundreds of bands to a city most of them had never heard of.

It just upsets me that something that has been a Tech tradition for so long is being swept under the rug like this. But I know the exec staff is trying to get some stuff together.

In the meantime check out the facebook group and the myspace http://www.myspace.com/ktxt for updates on the situation.

I just can't figure out the cost of continuing the station on the web

Versus on the air. The only difference is maintaining the broadcast and power right? The comment I appreciated most in your comment Cane is that the station is not there to be a “profit” making enterprise for the university. Horticulture and Animal Science, as well as Chem and Bio must also be extremely expensive majors to offer, and while the Ag department does “sell” some meat, they can’t come close to paying for themselves. If a University of between 25-30,000 students can’t pay for a little radio station, then how can Breckenridge, Eastland, Vernon have stations, for goodness sake, even Memphis, TX even keeps a radio station up and running. The thing is, TECH is THE university of WEST Texas. We’re comming off like we’re a damn sattelite campus of Texas A&M-Commerce.

1) nice to see you posting here. can’t check SA at work so it’s bringing a bit of SA back here :)

2) did the station not do any advertising? was there a reason why there were no ads on the air or was it an FCC thing or what?

I think that people are most upset about this because of the way they went about closing the station down. No warning, no attempt to let the students solve the problem (ie the station wasn’t pulling in any money), just a shutdown notice right when the semester ended, done fast to prevent fallout. Well, they’ve now got fallout on their hands and a lot of alumni coming back stating that this isn’t right.

Apparently since they have an educational license (or something like that) from the fcc, they have pretty strict limitations on advertising. They did occasionally do a “This block of programming sponsored by [usually a club or restaurant],” but I doubt those brought in any substantial amount of money.

They’re the lifeblood of live music in Lubbock, and I have no doubt that all the people who would go to the shows they sponsored would gladly spend 10 or 20 bucks on a benefit show to save the station if it came down to that.

Whether or not that would have been an option, they were given no opportunity to try to save the station in any way and it sucks.

by boar_amour on Dec 11, 2008 2:26 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just Like PBS

I worked at and managed an FM radio station when in High School in the 1970s. With that type of non-commercial license you cannot run advertisements. Limited sponsorships of programmiing are allowed, but not quite the same as selling ads. You see the same types of program sponsorships on PBS television.

by jeffinhouston on Dec 11, 2008 2:42 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So they are limited to doing pledge drives like PBS, getting said limited sponsors, or making money off of bringing in shows (which they probably don’t make money from)

What the fuck.

KTXT has been the only radio station I’ve actually liked or cared about, ever. I’ve been listening to them off and on since the first time I lived here, in 1988.

Bummer…I discovered Echo and the Bunnymen, Sisters of Mercy, Jesus and Mary Chain, REM, Front 242, Skinny Puppy and a ton of other great bands from listening to KTXT.

Unfortunate to see a Tech icon go by the wayside.

Radio Head, Fugazi, Catherine Wheel, all kinds of old school Ska, Tool, Reverend Horton Heat even Nanci Griffith, Amarillo’s Joe Ely, and Lubbock’s own Jimmy Dale Gilmore. This sucks.

Joe Ely

may have been born in Amarillo, but after the age of 12 he was in Lubbock, graduating from Tom S, Lubbock High School (Yes, it used to have the Tom S. in front of Lubbock-named after the founding father of Lubbock) in the early 60’s. While he hangs around in Austin now, he will always be linked to Lubbock and where he got his real break: Stubb’s Bar-B-Q, on East Broadway, across from the fair grounds.

I saw Doyle Bramhall Sr. perform at Stubbs CA 1994

(When Stubb’s was at I-27 and 19th) Bought him a few beers between sets and talked about the songs he wrote for SRV. I loved Stubbs, God rest his soul “There will be no Bad talk or Loud talk in this place.” You’re right about Ely. His fellow flatlander, Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s dad was the boss at the Tech dairy, and both gentlemen put out great music for those who appreciate a great songwriter. I’m so proud of my West Texas (Abilene area) heritage and Tech. I hope we get our crap together and have a college radio. I know alot of us are waxing about the old college memories, and I thank DTN for letting me reflect on the rich college experience I had in the best college town in America. I wouldn’t go back and trade it for Austin, College Station or even Stillwater, even knowing all the athletic heartache I have suffered in the 12 years since I graduated. From Here, It’s Possible! Dammit

by Plano Jeff on Dec 15, 2008 11:17 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can see where the maintenance costs of a broadcast station might get serious whenever some kind of major equipment problem came up. Even though it’s a low-power station, it’s not hard to imagine a $10K repair item popping up now and then (electronics, antenna, wiring, etc). And of course the bean counters always attribute a portion of total costs to something like this, making the radio station technically responsible for a share of everything from insurance premiums to lawn maintenance. If you went pure internet, you could avoid the costs of maintaining the broadcast equipment (maybe even sell that part) but you’d still have the ‘paper’ costs the accountants gave you.

But even if they were on solid ground about the cost issues, it’s still pretty cheesy when they play the surprise shutdown game right at semester’s end. It’s just their way of saying we don’t care what you think about it.

by TT_ on Dec 11, 2008 5:22 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

or that they do care what people think about it, but they’re going to do it anyway and they don’t really want to hear the bitching.

What is the shortfall?

How much money are we talking about? Did Ms. Peterson say that it was a one-time infusion that would solve the problem – or is there a more endemic issue with the budget?

As a KTXT DJ in 1978-79 (The Yawn Patrol 6-10 mornings). I am really upset and sursprised to hear this is happening -

by Let's Go Tech! on Dec 12, 2008 10:19 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Rumor has it ...

the station costs just over 100K a year to operate. To me, that really isn’t all that much money for something like KTXT in an institution this big. They simply need to find a new place for it besides the student media department and they’ll be fine. The sad part is, it doesn’t appear that anyone at TTU is willing to figure out how to make it work.

by maliath on Dec 12, 2008 1:18 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That Sucks!

I can’t beleive that Tech can not find a way to fit the station in their budget.
