Harrell Snubbed
I don't care about the Heisman. I know that I'm not supposed to say that, but it's really how I feel. I've always felt that it's a popularity contest with the criteria being amongst the voters: the award should go to the best player on the best team, not the best player in the country.
Tuesday night Graham Harrell was not invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony and as Skin Patrol noted, this entire series of events may be a blessing in disguise as Graham Harrell demonstrated that he's got more clsss and presence in his broken pinky finger than any voters:
"I thought I would be, but that’s the way it goes,’’ Harrell said. "I didn’t really think too much about it (beforehand). I would have been fine being there. I’ll be fine not being there. It would have been a huge honor to be there. To be mentioned and considered to possibly be a finalist is a great honor as well. We’ve had a great season. I don’t think it takes anything away from it.’’
The Captain was not as kind:
"If Graham is not invited to the Heisman, they ought to quit giving out the award,’’ Leach said in a statement released by Tech. "It is a shameless example of politics ruling over performance. The other guys are deserving, but he has earned a place alongside them."
Last night, my anger was with the Downtown Athletic Club, but then after sleeping on it, Harrell's fate was sealed by the voters.
One of the reasons some voters are voting for Colt McCoy is because did more with less talent.
If that argument is true, then shouldn't Harrell win hands down?
I find that hard to believe that Texas Tech has more talent than Florida, Oklahoma and Texas. Yep, Texas Tech has Michael Crabtree, one of the best that has ever played the game, but Harrell certainly shouldn't be penalized for being his teammate, especially in a year when Harrell spread the ball around more to his other receivers and had a running game to bring down the attempts from last year.
Defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill also backed his quarterback:
"I think it’s disgraceful not inviting the best quarterback in the country, bar none, to the Heisman,’’ Tech assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill said. "He’s one of the leading quarterbacks in the history of the game. He’s won more games and done more at Texas Tech than any quarterback in the country could have. He’s the epitome of what you want, not only a great signal caller but a great student academically.’’
All true Ruffin.
The three writers for the Dallas Morning News, Tim Cowlishaw, Kevin Sherrington and Brian Davis, each have a vote, revealed their ballots and I believe that this is symptomatic of the problem. Only one out of the three voted for Harrell and that was a third place vote from Davis.
That's probably how the votes broke down overall and the Downtown Athletic Club knew that Harrell had received only a handful of votes.
After this snub I'm more jaded than about the entire process and college football in general than I've ever been.
A real conversation with my wife this morning, who knows absolutely nothing or cares about college football (really . . . she has no idea, although I'm sure that some of my opinions have influenced her, a bit):
Me: I'm probably going to be running a little late this morning because Graham Harrell wasn't asked to go to the Heisman ceremony?Wife: What? That's a bunch of bullsh!t. Who did get invited? Oklahoma, Texas and some other big school?
Me: Yeah. Florida was the other school.
Wife: That's a slap in the face. If I was Harrell I'd be pissed.
Me: Harrell's handled it with class so far.
Wife: I don't care, if I were him I'd be pissed.
Me: Yeah.
Screw 'em.
They can have their awards, I could care less at this point.
All I care about any more is what happens between the lines on the field and right now, we've got coaches and a team that does more with less talent than anywhere in America and I'm pretty damned proud of that.
Wreck 'Em.

you preach a good word seth!
Last night I was talking with my fiance, who has been fed up with football a time or 2 this semester. And I just told her how disappointed I was. She wholeheartedly agreed. Going into this season I had always had a little bit of soreness towards Graham, mainly because of the Missouri fiasco my freshman year, but this year I have found TONS of respect for the guy. It makes me sick that he has had to go through all of this at the end of the season. If there is a player in CFB that deserves this, it is not Graham. Seeing how he handled it only makes matters worse for me, because it confirms that he is the class act that I knew he had become. Congratulations on a fantastic season Graham!!

Updated info on Harrell not making finalist...
After speaking to a source with inside info on the process, I was able to get some clarification that has not been made public.
Apparently Graham totally bombed the Swim Suit portion of the competition. And with the low score in such a pivital portion of the pageant, there was no way to include him with the guys invited to New York….BS
I completely agree with Seth’s wife. This is complete bullshit. I appreciate the way Harrell has handled the snub. I’m not sure I would have been able to do it.
Bottomline, it takes away form the integrity of the award. For some time now, I’ve felt it was more and more of a popularity award. This just seals it for me. I really could care less who wins the award. It’s become Best Player from a Big School that is constantly talked about by the Media.
I think all self-respecting Red Raider fans should simply not watch the ceremony on Saturday night . You can bet your ass I won’t be watching. I’m planning to watch the Tech vs UT game on DVR instead. That would be the one where Harrell completely out-played one of their heisman finalist.
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

This blows
This blows but what can you do. We have always been the ugly step children and we always will. That really does suck for Graham. At least Graham won the heart award, Tech got more of it than any school I know.

I think "The Snub" is a blessing in disguise for Harrell
The Heisman has lately been the kiss of death in the NFL in regards to a players success. Not to say that I am not disappointed but not suprised.
I think everyone should know by now that Tech will never be given anything! The way we ever win anything is if we ram it down their throat as in going undefeated. Because if the press is given another plausible alternative they will chose them everytime.
So I say they take take their Heisman and shove it. I just hope Graham goes onto the NFL and finally proves that he is no “system quarterback.”

I think the Big XII Tie-breaker was the deciding factor...
I think Bradford is going to win it. However, I think if Tech or UT had won the tiebreaker, the QB of that team would have won it. Most of the voters only care about what happened at the very end of the season.
But who knows, Tebow might win it again…

He Heisman is a joke and I will never watch another awards presentation. The other thing about Graham is he is sorta “Joe QB”…he is the working class and will not make millions in the nfl like the 3 other guys. Sending him to NY would be like him representing the “little people”. The heisman is a joke and mocks this country in this rough economic times and awards the rich and the famous.

To paraphrase Mike Gundy...
That Heisman finalists list is GARBAGE! And the people who selected it that way ARE GARBAGE! You penalize a guy, who does everything right.
But to me, this line of thought is even WORSE than anything else:
I find that hard to believe that Texas Tech has more talent than Florida, Oklahoma and Texas. Yep, Texas Tech has Michael Crabtree, one of the best that has ever played the game, but Harrell certainly shouldn’t be penalized for being his teammate, especially in a year when Harrell spread the ball around more to his other receivers and had a running game to bring down the attempts from last year.
If people (and yes, I AM one of them) believe this statement “Texas Tech has Michael Crabtree, one of the best that has ever played the game” (which I realize is Seth’s opinion and not a “released statement”), then the Heisman is the BIGGEST sham in the world. If the trophy is supposed to go to (according to the Heisman website): “the most outstanding college football player” how is Crabtree not there? You either throw out that “not as much talent” load of crap buoying McCoy (or agree that Mack Brown is an AWFUL coach since his recruiting classes are always at the top) or you give the award to Crabtree right now, if he’s so “outstanding” that McCoy is obviously handicapped by comparison. If neither of those two things are true, then Harrel should be in New York.
I always knew the Heisman wasn’t going to “the most outstanding college football player” (at least since the start of the BCS era), but when I can even listen to Longhorn people agreeing that Harrell got snubbed (either with glee or confusion) then screw the Heisman voters. Screw ‘em anyway, until the day a Texas Tech player (not a “small school” player, but a Red Raider) wins the thing, I’m done caring about who everyone else thinks is great. I’d say I’m done with it period, but I’ll admit that I’ll watch the “achievement” if it’s made by one of our boys.
I know it would never happen, but I would LOVE it (and he’d be the greatest legend the school ever produced) if Crabtree comes back, leads us to a championship (or even “just” BCS game), wins the Heisman and then snubbed the award (doesn’t go to claim it).

CRAP CRAP CRAP
This really is a huge snub. I live in Austin and I know this is a huge snub when Austin sports talk radio agrees with me. Every commentator ever in the past said the reason Tech never got anyone mentioned in these awards was because we never had the record or wins to go along with the stats, now we have the wins and yet again no AWARDS representation. Pure and simple if you’re not from a high dollar school or traditional power you just get overlooked, unless you break every record. Total and utter crap. I hope Harrell goes to the pros and proves everyone wrong.

This award has become completely controlled by espn
Every week they tell you “who” the worthy kids are to be in your heisman ballot and after every game, they tell you which kid has moved up in the race and they tell you it’s his to lose, and he just passed him on the list. Blah, blah! Cowlishaw is just a shill for espn and has been sucking their teat for the past 5 years trying to make it big time. He even tried to become their"NASCAR" beat writer. It’s funny when considering how DMN is tanking, that they go and give a local kid the shaft. I need to think about my DMN subscription.

I almost sounds believable
when they say this “While the task of designating the most outstanding college football player was daunting, a crucial decision was the group of individuals chosen to select him. It was determined that a logical choice was sports journalists from all across the country who, as informed, competent and impartial, would comprise the group of electors.” (heisman.com) The only part I take issue with is “informed, competent and impartial.” You want to discount Harrell for the Oklahoma game? He completed 60% for 361 yards and 3 touchdowns. And that was his worst game. At the absolute minimum, an “informed, competent, and impartial” group sends Harrell to New York.

Interesting web site
This site predicts the voting outcome based on infomration that they have received from actual voters. The distance between 3 and 4 that they predict is much larger than I would have thought. Harrell 4th, Crabtree 6th.

Wow!
That is a huge gap. I pulled up last year’s results because I couldn’t believe that Brennan got the nod to go to NYC last year but Harrell didn’t this year. The gap between Tebow/McFadden and Brennan/Daniel was pretty big, but not as large as that site suggests it will be this year. Plus, Brennan finished third…I guess I completely missed that last year…or didn’t care…:o)
Player 1ST 2ND 3RD TOTAL == = = = === Tim Tebow, Florida 462 229 113 1,957 Darren McFadden, Arkansas 291 355 120 1,703 Colt Brennan, Hawaii 54 114 342 632 Chase Daniel, Missouri 25 84 182 425

My take on that...
I can fully believe that voting breakdown, and here’s how it works:
-Sam Bradford (leading his team to the BCS championship)
-Tim Tebow (leading his team to the BCS championship)
-Colt McCoy (been having his jock ridden by sports “journalists” all year)

I never realized exactly how the voting works. Each ballot only votes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I guess if the top 3 are so clear cut that they are virtually the only ones getting votes, that’s what happens. Though I tend to think the biggest reason Tebow is getting looks is because he won in the vacuum that was last year’s race.

Still a blessing in disguise, this time for the school and the fanbase. There isn’t allegedly much to commend of Texas Tech fans who are the most maligned “Classless Clowns” of all fanbases, at least in the Big XII. I love it. The giant stadium sized chip on the collective shoulders of Texas Tech partisans just got a lot bigger, and I’m happy claiming that as the defining characteristic of Texas Tech football. We are the mistreated and abandoned shaggy mutt sick and tired of being thrown scraps. We bite, and we have something.
We need to focus on beating Ole Miss and forget about Heisman “snubs.” I love that Harrell, when asked about what happened, continues to emphasize that it’s about Texas Tech football, it’s about our team and not some stupid hardware. We take of our own, first and foremost, because it’s obvious no one else will. That is fine by me. World-is-against-us, snubs, mistreated abandoned, etc. these things make people dangerous, awesome.

If you are using a smartphone...
..just select the full version option and post a comment that way. That is what I’m doing right now. I’m also using Opera Mini as my mobile browser. Much better than IE Mobile. And if you want mobile Flash support, try out the Skyfire Beta. Not the most user-friendly but supports Flash. I can watch Hulu using my mobile phone with Skyfire.
I wouldn’t be wasting my time wisely if I didn’t take advantage of reading and posting on DTn from my phone.

Yeah, I thought Graham did very well in the interview for College Football Live.
The first 8 minutes of the show was on the snub. I’m very happy to see there are some media people agreeing that it was wrong. At least we are in the conversation i.e. getting the Texas Tech brand out there in the spotlight to some degree.

Why does the OU game have such an impact on Harrell's Heisman?
Harrell threw for 361 yds, 2 TDs and 1 int. They scored 21 pts against the #1 team (if you believe the BCS) on the road. Against an unranked Ole Miss at home, Tebow willed his team to score 30 pts and against Hawaii he completed 9 passes! Even in the TTech blowout, Bradford completed only 14 passes and was the Big12 player of the Week, even though OU had 2 backs over 100 yds each at >5yds/carry and at least 2 tds each. It was the OU running game, not Bradford, that beat Tech. And McCoy was not much of a factor in the TTU game.
I just don’t buy the excuse that a bad loss did him in.

Frustrated Incorporated
I’m trying to find the silver lining in all of this. I’m still fuming at the snub. Not only is Graham most CERTAINLY one of the best overall players in the Country, he exemplifies the student-athlete. I would take him to run my team over McCoy ANY day……….hands down, not even close. What also concerns me is the way potential recruits will look at this. What we’re basically saying is, you might be the best QB, RB, WR in the nation, you can come to Tech and have enourmous success (both statistically and in terms of wins) but it won’t mean jack-crap as far as anyone outside of our circle is concerned. How can this not hurt us from a recruiting standpoint? My heart tells me somehow el Capitan will use this as some sort of motivational tool, but my head tells me it won’t matter when OU, UT et al come knocking at those kids’ doors. Can someone tell me how this can work in our favor looking ahead? I’ve read about the optimism for Graham as he moves on, but my God, to call him out tonight on ESPN and say “sorry Graham, you’re not going to be with us in NY” and see him with his head down……….they can stick sorry up their a$$. Nobody likes injustice, particularly if they’ve had a taste of it. I’m pissed-off and this is going to take awhile for me to get over. They treat our players and program this way, then act befuddled when our fans raise ten kinds of hell when the opportunity arises. My wife is an Aggie and even she’s pissed at this. She finally understands my David vs Goliath analogy that I’ve always tried to make her understand as we compete against the OU’s, UT’s and now the national POS media. I’m rambling now but I would love to know that this won’t hurt our program moving forward. I know we’ve had more exposure this year than ever really but how can we build (better recruits from bigger schools) with this type of treatment? I’m done, thanks for the opportunity to vent.
