Anxious to hear your thoughts about the Heisman, here are mine

Star-divide

To those who should no longer be able to vote for the winner of the Heisman Trophy:

How much longer do you think the intelligence of the college football fan will stand to be insulted?  We’ve gone from reminders that college football is a sport driven by politics, money and greed to not being able to get away from it.   What’s the point of having an award given to “the nation’s most outstanding football player” if it’s seldom given to the nation’s most outstanding football player?

Likewise, what’s the point of having a “National Championship” when only eight (maybe?) teams are actually allowed to play for it? But that’s another story for another day.

The best players in the nation are supposed to be invited to the award ceremony in New York on each Saturday that the Heisman Trophy is presented.  This Saturday, for the second consecutive year, Graham Harrell will be denied his shot at the most hallowed trophy in sports not because of the name on the back of his jersey, but rather the one on the front.

Every year, someone gets left out, in college football and in countless other places; understandable.  But where college football is concerned, why has it become so pathetically predictable? That’s rhetorical (obviously, as everyone knows the answer).  However, if the award is indeed given to the nation’s most outstanding football player, what have the three finalists for the Heisman Trophy accomplished this year that Graham Harrell has not?  What case can be made that they’ve been more successful or more important to their team?  Are their statistics better?  No.  Have they led their respective teams to better records?  No.  Do they have the “privilege” of having played for a storied program that has alumni and boosters with influence on the outcome of the Heisman vote?  Yes.

I guess you can say that it’s Graham Harrell’s fault, for choosing to play for a school and a head coach that has had players at the same position put up similar numbers. None of those others in that same system however went 11-1. While McCoy, Tebow, and Bradford all finished with the same record, Harrell did so surrounded by vastly inferior talent (except for one player).  However, just like last year, Harrell will be punished for playing for a coach other coaches don’t like, due to the fact said coach has assailed conventional college football wisdom (someone arrest him).  Anyone who truly believes that any of those other three quarterbacks is more important to his team’s respective success simply isn’t watching the football games, and if that’s the case, how can they be allowed to vote?

Again, the knock on Harrell is that he’s simply another player in a system producing similar numbers as those before him, making him a product of that system.  However, let’s take a quick look at everybody’s darling Tim Tebow.  How can a player who’s not projected to be able to play the same position at the next level not be a product of his college system!  Am I missing something?  If you’re only able to succeed at your position in college, then is it not that college’s system that allows you to be successful? Was not former Heisman winner Eric Crouch, who couldn’t play the same position in the pros, the very definition of being a product of his system?  If Andre Ware was playing for Houston right now, putting up the same numbers he did in 1989, he’d have absolutely no shot at winning the Heisman.  We all know that to be the case, but doesn’t that mean something’s wrong?

If Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford accomplished the exact same things that they’ve accomplished at UF, UT and OU at another school not part of the “elite 8”, say at Army or Baylor or East Carolina or Texas Tech or Wake Forest or Oregon State, would he still be able to win the award?  When the answer to that question is so sadly obvious, how can the award be taken seriously?

It’s a shame what college football has been reduced to.  College football has plainly become just as corporate and as money driven as the NFL, which is fine; business is business. Just don't make it so obvious.  I’m too young to know what it was like to watch BYU or Army or TCU win a national championship, but it’s a shame those things are impossible now.  It’s also a shame it’s gotten to the point where even the players on such teams are disqualified from contention for the Heisman Trophy.  This would all be OK with me and many others like me if the Heisman Trophy were presented, treated, and revered for what it really is, or at the very least become.  Don’t insult fans by calling it an award for the nation’s most outstanding football player when it clearly is not.  Call it what it really is: “The award given to the most outstanding white quarterback or black running back playing in a pro-style offense or one very similar on one of these 8 or so teams that have previous Heisman winners and national championships under a  white head coach who believes in playing football the way we believe it should be played ”

What a joke this college football charade has become.

Sincerely,

Your average college football fan

So true....Also here's something to think about

I couldn’t agree more with the thoughts of the so eloquently put “your average college football fan.”

The heisman trophy is a complete joke now and to be honest it has been since 1998 when the last best player in the country at the time, that being Ricky Williams, won the heisman. The media, the boosters, the alumni of all these respected schools, if that’s what you want to call them, are a joke.

It’s sad but true….. It’s all politics and that’s the way it’s going to be probably for a long long time.

Ricky is strange but I like him

Speaking of a “system” guy. You go out there and RUN the ball as much as they (UT) did and with the monsters he had blocking for him? That’s not a system?

Perfectly put, David

This season, above all others, has proven that there exists total vaccum of intelligence in the media. For you east and west coasters, and the dumbasses in Dallas, here is why we are bitching……..(see below). It is not a case of ut loast because their freshman db can’t catch, it is not a case of the whorns losing out in the last second of a game, it IS a case of TOTAL DOMINATION against a team which YOU – you stupid, uninformed, never watched the game, moronic media pundits graced as #1. Face it, ut is at best a one demensional offense, which when you stop the playmaker you stop the team. Sportswriters, take heed, your bothers in the rest of your paper are facing layoffs and bankruptcy because they failed to do their job, but rather depended on others to think for them……

When it’s so obvious as to how meaningless the award has become, why insult the collective intelligence of every college football fan by touting the award in the manner the media continues to tout it.

It’s frustrating. It’s not a matter of the little guy wanting attention for his school, or of the outsider wants to hang out with the big boys. It’s simply seeing someone get the accolades and the attention they deserve.

by davidttu on Dec 11, 2008 8:38 AM CST reply actions

You know, I can see how Harrell got left out. He was a distant 4th because of all those that voted for him, the likely voted him third. They only vote for 3 spots. Last year Brennan got an invite because behind tebow, there really weren’t any strong candidates (I would have voted for Dennis Dixon)

Now there’s the real shame of it. Why only vote for top 3 when, yearly, there are many more deserving? I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t give 5 spots. See a lot more players like Crabtee and Shonn Greene getting votes and even getting higher votes because you no longer have to leave off the popular candidates.

by kayakyakr on Dec 11, 2008 8:52 AM CST reply actions

I agree

Again however, it’s frustrating how predictable it is that Harrell would be the one left out. While he may deserve it no more than Tebow and Bradford (McCoy, IMO is the least deserving), he certainly is no less deserving.

just before the OU game the media was ready to give it to Harrell if he beat OU. Granted, that didn’t happen, but it shouldn’t have totally erased him. The timing thing seems to hurt here as much as it does in the rankings. Since UF, OU, and UT all loss earlier to Tech, their qb’s had time to wait out for Harrell to lose and pass him. stupid monkeys

Diehard Fans

The Heisman Trophy voting has become a popularity contest ,instead of best college player, athlete. Remember , “fan” is short for ‘FANATIC’, DIEHARD FANATICS, AND DIEHARD MEDIA FANATICS, vote for the Heisman. Fanatics like winners, media likes winners. Tech and Harrell lost on NATIONAL STAGE against OU. The loss took away all the attention Tech had been awarded previously. [Texas,OSU] . When the media gets laughed at on national TV, they come back with a vengeance. This happened to Tech and Harrell. The only defense against the media is “just win baby”, sad,but true.—— GO RAIDERS, make a statement in the Cotton BOWL, WE CANNOT AFFORD ANOTHER EGG.

I don't think Harrell should win

But he should definitely have gotten an invite.

If it makes you feel any better, we got screwed out of a national title game simply because people wanted to see the SEC vs. Big 12 matchup, not because of an objective analysis of our respective resumes (Florida doesn’t even come close to Texas or OU there).

And while Reggie Bush was a deserving player, the ridiculous margin he won over Vince Young shows how stupid these voters are and how prone they are to media hoopla.

And of course, the stupid autobid system and the stupid conference limit screwed you guys out of a BCS game while teams like Virginia Tech and Cincy get in.

So join the club of people getting jobbed by the powers of college football. Somebody will be screwed again next year.

by TheElusiveShadow on Dec 11, 2008 3:04 PM CST reply actions

Sure. Don't give Graham the trophy.

But he deserves to sit in a suit next to those guys. He has the same record, and better stats than all of them. He also gave Colt his only loss. He has earned recognition the old fashioned way. He deserved an invite. Whether it was a forgone conclusion that was not going to win or not.

Go Tech!!!

Ricky Williams not a product of the system

He may have had big lineman in front of him but he was a freak. While I was living in Austin my father, who is a UT alum, had season tickets and we went to every home game, granted I was also about 14 years old at the time but Ricky was a stud in every aspect.

He had good WR’s around him as you might recall, Kwame Cavil, Wayne McGarity, Ryan Nunez, and Derek Lewis not to mention Hodges Mitchell who fared pretty well at Texas as well.

Now granted none of these guys really did much after their college careers in the NFL, but they did pretty well for themselves during their college years. So really to say that in Mack’s 1st year as head coach at texas with ricky and that ricky was a product of the system is a bit “untrue.” I kind of see what your saying Plano Jeff but its not valid enough because when you have a guy like Ricky who was literally a man amongst boys you give him the ball 90% of the time.

I’ll also say that the same year Reggie Bush won the heisman was the only other year in my mind that I can recall when the Heisman trophy got the award right. He was by far and away the best player in college football. Vince was close but not the best player.

The Heisman as most of us know is primarily an east coast biased media based group that does a majority of the votes. I don’t think the east coast gets to see alot of Texas Tech football and that’s a shame because they would thoroughly enjoy watching our high octane offense. Maybe the only way to actually get the east coast media to see Texas Tech play when we have heisman trophy/maxwell/bilitnekov/ etc contenders out there is to schedule games against the ACC and Big East I suppose. That way they’ll get a chance to see us destroy, annihilate, and obliterate any of those teams and see that yes we do have worthy candidates.

If not I don’t know how anyone there (east coast media) are going to be able to look through their glasses any time soon and see how scrutinized the awards are nowadays.

In my opinion…Winning the Heisman trophy nowadays it seems like is like cheating on an exam and getting an A but knowing that you didn’t really work at it to earn it. I think it’s like that nowadays.

Did anyone mention that 85% of McCoy’s passes were to the damn sideline all year long??? Graham could of done that in his sleep……

WRECK EM TECH!!!

I posted all that at work before I left so there are any mistakes I apologize....it was from the heart!

Graham should at least win the Davey O’Brien award but unfortunately he won’t and that’s a damn shame.

At least Crab wins back to back Biletnikoff awards….about as impressive as it gets to me.

by tturaider1284 on Dec 11, 2008 5:31 PM CST reply actions

I agree that Harrell was not the best player in the nation…I think it was Crabtree. I think MC is better at what he does than any other player in the country is at what they do.

That said, I am disappointed for him but I have no real heartburn that he didn’t get an invite. It is what it is and this was our first year to really get on the national stage and receive the exposure we’ve been begging for. That award doesn’t usually go to someone from an up and comer program, it goes to a guy from a been here a while program.

It’s a tough thing because you want your favorite teams’ players to be recognized, but Tebow, Bradford and McCoy have certainly had fantastic years as well. Hard to unemotionally take anything from those three. If Graham didn’t get enough votes, he didn’t.

I agree on Crab

I agree ,but i have to adnit since they were all QB;s, all QB;s, they should have let him go. Three years with all kinds of records, and the fact he stayed in school and gave his school 4-5 yrs, He paid his dues,, thats what bothers me. He did win the Johnny U award, given to best qb in country,,not bad. As a college football player the Heisman would be greatest , but the Johnny is given to best QB

by DR.MARK on Dec 11, 2008 10:16 PM CST reply actions

well,

it goes to the best senior quarterback, which he definately was

by kevinkinsler on Dec 12, 2008 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

Crab is a Two Timer!!!

Everyone has made a great case for Graham so I am going to take a different approach…

If Crabtree wore the Maze and Blue instead of the Scarlet and Black he would have already been annointed the Heisman in October. I am sure several of the Michigan Alums would have claimed to see him also cleanse lepers and cast out demons…

This award is sooooo ridiculous…. I can guarantee that none of the three current nominees would have led us to an 11-1 season, instead I think they would have probably lost two additional games which would have led to a direct flight to the Alamo Bowl.

by ttu_porters on Dec 12, 2008 8:40 AM CST reply actions

Best players in the country....here's my list

First off I am a die hard Tech fan so I’ll try not to be biased here but without a doubt as far as athletic ability and skills Michael Crabtree is by far and away the best player in College Football. He has the ability to change a game in the blink of an eye. These other names are guys who are just phenomenal athletes as well.

Next is Shonn Green. This guy is flat out just good. He’ll be playing on Sunday’s soon and making big time bucks. Has speed, power, agility, and can also block well for a running back.

Lastly it’s got to me Javonn Ringer. Another great RB and just like Green he can run with the best of them.

Honorable Mention: Sam Bradford, Rey Maulauga, Brian Orakpo and Percy Harvin (when he’s healthy)

Dez Bryant will win the Biletnikoff award in my opinion next year and is the next coming of Michael Crabtree. He to is a stud.

by tturaider1284 on Dec 12, 2008 8:53 AM CST reply actions

Ringer is overrated and gets shut down in big games even with an offensive line that is better than Iowa’s.

Graham Harrell--Texas Tech Hero

Because Graham Harrell is allowed to make his own calls if he feels it is best when the coach’s choice may not work, proves how amazing this guy is. No other QB in college could have accomplished what Harrell did this year at Tech with the same team behind him. NO ONE! NO HOW! Without a doubt, he is the best QUARTERBACK in the college ranks. He grew up in a football environment, as some other players did as well, but has absorbed so much more, allowing him to read defenses extremely fast and accurately. This has made it possible for him to make those changes as he feels necessary. Mike Leach really trusts Harrell’s decisions, being very secure in the knowledge that Harrell will deliver the best play for the defense being shown. While all three of the other Quarterback candidates, as well as the running backs and receivers (including Crabs) are really good, Harrell simply stands out above them all. The thing is, he is not from one of those "elite" schools. It is a shame. Of course, this is not the first time a "maverick" has had a chance to break into the crowd, but it is now and Harrell is so good, it is just too obvious what the voters were trying to do.

Not to defend the media homers, but the FWST stopped covering Tech after Leach cut them off from all player access, etc a few years ago. Until then, they usually had pretty good coverage of Tech – the best among big town papers in the state. It’s hard to get big media coverage when the reporters are cut off from any information.

Not true

Dwain Price covers Texas Tech better than the DMN and probably with less resources. Price is constantly writing about Texas Tech.

Considering current coverage

it’s not even close. Price may not have the access like other outlets, he is the dedicated reporter to Texas Tech and the Ft. Worth Star Telegram covers Texas Tech better than the DMN where they have to split reporters covering the Big 12 South teams. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about the FWST and Price.

True about FWST

The Startlegram proved their committment to have the best sports page in DFW when they ponied up the cash to steal Randy Galloway from DMN years ago. Until then, DMN was considered the bible of sports pages nation wide. They are in a dying industry and they simply cater to the schools with the largest fan base, ie… they are trying to save their industry. You want to see a joke of a sports page, check out the Houston Moronichle.

Ok, now what?

I agree with just about everything written in this post in-so-far as it is what it is and we’re calling a spade a spade. But what can we do about it? Are we to just go back to West Texas with our tails tucked, mouths shut and expectations low? Some would say win. That’s a laugh. Some would say put up stellar numbers. That’s a laugh. I hope Leach comes back and next year and we pummel every non-conf team by 50, rip thru the Big XII and have a player get invited for the award………………and he refuse to go. THAT would send one helluva message. I know I’m delirious with frustration but that would truly be awesome.

by Shampoo your Mullet on Dec 13, 2008 5:57 PM CST reply actions

Tech has no one to blame but themselves

Sorry, but you can’t hype two people for the Heisman, and expect that not to hurt the voting.

If you can’t agree which players is the best player on your own TEAM, why should the media consider one seriously for best player in the NATION?

Harrell did deserve to go to NY, I agree with you there, as did Crabtree, but Harrell isn’t anywhere close to Heisman worthy. The incredible collapse/chokejob against Oklahoma killed any shot Harrell had for the Heisman. Add in the fact that Sonny Cumbie showed that anyone with a pulse can pile up incredible numbers under Leach’s tutelage, and you can understand why the media ignored Harrell’s numbers. Harrell had to impress the voters with wins, and when it came down to crunch time, he couldn’t do it. End of story.

"The award given to the most outstanding white quarterback or black running back playing in a pro-style offense or one very similar on one of these 8 or so teams that have previous Heisman winners and national championships under a white head coach who believes in playing football the way we believe it should be played "

Archie Griffin, Bo Jackson, et al. who won the Heisman while playing in option offenses would disagree with you. Charlie Ward would especially take exception to your racism.

Anyone who truly believes that any of those other three quarterbacks is more important to his team’s respective success simply isn’t watching the football games, and if that’s the case, how can they be allowed to vote?

You could put Taylor Potts at QB and with Michael Crabtree healthy, Tech’s offense can still move the ball and score, so to say that Harrell is more important to Tech’s offense than Tebow or McCoy is to Florida or texas is ludicrous. Take Tebow away from Florida or McCoy away from texas, and both of those offenses are dead in the water; take Harrell away from Tech, and Potts steps right in and the offense keeps moving.

by Beergut on Dec 25, 2008 5:39 AM CST reply actions

Let's be honest here

I disagree on McCoy. His biggest selling point over Harrell(by the media)was that he didn’t have the supporting cast that Harrell did. What??? Let me list all the years that Tech has had better recruiting classes than Texas.

1) N/A

There it’s done. Now, let me list all the years that Tech had more 5 & 4 star recruits than Texas
1) N/A

There, it’s done.

How can you make the case that McCoy didn’t have a good if not great surrounding cast! IF anyone has done more with less, then it’s Harrell. T

by ttu_porters on Dec 26, 2008 8:32 AM CST up reply actions

never heard that reasoning from the media

only reason I consistently heard was that McCoy was more valuable to his team as a player than Harrell was, a contention I agree with

I don’t think you would argue, though, that as far as supporting casts go, McCoy was at a disadvantage at WR when compared to Harrell, simply b/c he didn’t have an uncoverable freak of an athlete at WR like Crabtree on his team.

As for better supporting cast, I will say that in two important positions (WR &RB) that Tech did have better players than texas. texas has no one to compare to Crabtree, that is not in dispute. I think Batch and Woods are both better RBs than Chris Ogbonnaya ever thought about being. texas won this season b/c McCoy was a difference maker in the air and on the ground (out of necessity, texas had no running game to speak of), which is why McCoy deserved consideration over Harrell.

Harrell never did anything to make him stand out as the best player on his own team, forget the conference or nationally.
