Texas Tech Tuesday Morning Notes - He's Going To Be Back Edition

Double-T Nation News:

DTN Appointments: DTN's Basketball Report is scheduled to go online at noon.

Mike Leach Watch:

FWST's Dwain Price is reporting that AD Gerald Myers is working off the premise that Coach Leach isn't leaving Texas Tech:

"He's going to be back,'' Myers said on Monday. "It's just a matter of getting (contract negotiations) done.

"I expect to hear something from them, but I haven't. I guess they're working on something.'''

Hmmm. The good part: "He's going to be back." The bad part: "I guess they're working on something."

I'm so tired of this game. It would be real nice to get this done yesterday and I'm saying that as nicely as I possibly can.

Texas Tech Football:

Found this interview from FWST's Stefan Stevenson with receiver and Texas Tech commit Aaron Fisher, who is up for Jerry Rice Award, which honors the best high school receiver in the nation. Good stuff.

Cotton Bowl:

Well, it appears that Ole Miss linebacker Ashlee Palmer was able to get his grades in order and will play in the Cotton Bowl. The Ole Miss defense is at full strength. And this seems strange, but after Christmas, the Ole Miss players are responsible for meeting in Dallas for practice on December 26th and the players are responsible for their own travel. You would think there would be some sort of team bus that goes from Mississippi to Dallas, but the players need to make it to Dallas on their own.

Texas Tech Basketball:

Last night, I blockquoted the quotes from the DMN college blog and this morning, DMN's Chuck Carlton writes the article with more detail and what happened Sunday:

The result: a 45-minute chat on how to improve the defensive performance. The immediate result was an all-defensive practice Sunday. Texas Tech has allowed 10 more points in the second half than the opening 20 minutes through the first eight games.

For those of you who are still a little upset about the loss to Lamar, last night Syracuse lost to Cleveland State. I'm not trying to excuse Junior Knight or any of the players for losing to an inferior team in Lamar, but I am trying to say that it can happen to the best of them.

If anything, I think it's going to be pretty interesting to see how this team reacts on Wednesday against UTEP. The Miners has two very talented guards (both average near 20 points a game). Let's see how PK gets his team to respond.

RTC with their weekly look at the Big 12 and the Topeka Capital Journal Online rounds up the Big 12.

rumor: Mike Leach’s current contract hang-up is over the contract prices for his assistants.

Just wondering?

I have been thinking that as much as we love Capt. Leach, and as much as I want him to stay and I think he will stay, is it possible that his persona has really become a detrament to other possible coaching jobs? Is he type cast now as the “mad scientist” and that his “interesting” behavior really only plays at a place like Tech? Don’t get me wrong, it seems that maybe afte all this stringing along we get to keep him and that in the future( at least the next 5 or so yrs.) we will not have to go thru all this “stuff”. Anyway, Capt. please sign the contract and let’s get on with this great recruiting class and beating Ole Miss so that we can finish in the top 5 of the BSC!!!!

This is why Myers has gone back to playing hardball. His agents get his name out there, but he rarely interviews well (I think it’s on purpose. He goes to the interviews without intention of really landing the job).

I’m just ready for him to sign.

I don't really

think he intentionally tanks interviews. I think he would have gone if someone would have offered him a job and that just hasn’t happened. Probably won’t any time soon, either. By now, some schools may think he’s just using the interview as leverage since he does it all the time (or tries to).

But I don’t think he fails during the interview process on purpose. That only hurts him in the long-run and he’s too smart for that. Those ADs talk to each other…

I don’t mean that he purposefully tanks interviews. I just don’t think he keeps his eccentricities in-check in order to interview better. He can interview well, he did when he was hired by Tech.

Been ready.....

….since before the season began.
The unfortunate thing about going through the process this way is that it just continues to degrade the relationship between Leach and Myers. And puts too much uncertainty around our ability to get to that ever elusive “tipping point”….

In reality...

…he is still under contract and this is only an extension. He probably doesn’t feel a sense of urgency in getting it signed nor see it as a show stopper if he decides to leave after next season.

Leach

If he dislikes Lubbock so much why doesn’t he leave? Him signing this extension isn’t going to make him stay for 5 more years, he can head out anytime he wants.

Whatever happens, I am quite sure that many Tech fans will never look at Leach the same after this. I personally lost a lot of respect for him – not that I originally had a ton to begin with – over his flirtations this year. He’s done it in the past, but this season he was open and brazen about it. Clearly, it was in relation to his contract extension negotiation, but I still don’t like it and won’t shed many tears if/when he leaves.

I put too much time and too much money into the university to be treated like that. Meyers didn’t win my affection with his delay of the offer; but he did make a VERY fair offer.

I take nothing away from Leach’s ability as a coach. He’s proven he’s good. But he’s also proven to be someone who isn’t afraid to show reckless disdain for his employer. Not a great character trait in my book, regardless of who you are or the strategy behind it.

i love leach and will even if he leaves tech. this has frustrated me with him and with his agents, but i don’t dislike him for it.

I do dislike his agents, though.

fair enough

I’m one of the few who has never really been that fond of him to begin with. I like his offense, but I’ve never liked him or his goofy act – which is what I think it is. An act.

Recruiting

It is very interesting how Leach handles his schedule. As we learned from Don Williams this is the 6th yr in a row Leach has been awol after our last reg. game. He has apparently allowed his coaches to continue to recruit like gang busters. I guess I had a good feeling about Leach staying when I realized that the coaches were out following our recruits and on to new ones. They had to be telling the recruits Leach was staying and to disregard any word otherwise. But, it still seems odd even if he has done it in the past, for Leach to just fly under the radar for about 10 days. Anyway, I hope this all gets done this week and we can move on to beating Ole Miss! Wreck’em Tech Keep Leach

Let's put this contract issue in perspective....

Like it or not……..everybody hates the business side of football…and college football is BIG business. It is the ugly underbelly of the sport. We just need to accept it, hard as that is. The coaching issue will work out and all will be well in Raiderland. I don’t see any reason to believe that Captain Leach will not be back.

Besides, for those of us that were here in 1986, how could ANYTHING…. and I mean ANYTHING be worse than the David McWilliams coaching debacle. Up until the past two weeks (BCS and Heisman snubs) nothing has EVER made made me madder about college football (ut in particular). I’d bettter stop now because I can feel the blood pressure increasing and a rant is not far off……so………That’s all I have to say about that .

I will never, EVER forget that pond scum of a man flashing the horns during his press conference…on Tech’s campus. What a pig. Wonder how that move has worked out for him in the long run?
