I was trying to figure out a statistical method of determining the overall play of the offensive lines and although I don't have the mathematical smarts of Rock M Nation I did come up with a few metrics to figure out offensive line play.
Up first, passing stats. Texas Tech gave up 5 sacks for 604 passing attempts, which turns out to be 1 sack for every 120.8 attempts. In terms of a percentage, the Red Raiders are giving up a sack at a 0.83% rate, which is unbelievable. This offensive line has done an unbelievable job of keeping Graham Harrell upright all season long. I wish I had the time to look at offensive lines and how they have historically done as this seems almost unbelievable considering the volume of attempts that Texas Tech has. Granted, most of those throws are short passes, but still, this offensive line is outstanding at protecting it's quarterback.
The running statistics are plainly yards per attempt, where Texas Tech averages 4.71 yards per attempt and to top it off, Texas Tech averages a touchdown for every 10.82 attempts (303 rushing attempts and 28 touchdowns). For comparison purposes, this leads the nation. Again, pretty amazing stats for a team that primarily passes. Nationally, just basing this off of yards per attempt, Texas Tech sits 31st in the nation.
Post-season awards have seen quite a few of Texas Tech's offensive linemen receive accolades. Brandon Carter was named to Phil Steele's 1st team offense and the AFCA coaches' All-America team. Louis Vasquez was named to Steele's 3rd team offense. Rylan Reed was named to the Walter Camp All-American team and ESPN's 1st team all big 12. Bottom line, three of the five offensive linemen have been named on various all-america teams for their play this year (Brandon Carter, Rylan Reed and Louis Vasquez).
Quite frankly, this is an offensive line that folks have noticed and may have missed the most consistent lineman in right tackle, Marlon Winn.

Same stats above apply to grade out Ole Miss' line. Ole Miss gave up 23 sacks in 311 passing attempts, which works out to be one sack for every 13.52 passing attempts. In terms of a percentage, Ole Miss was giving up a sack 7.40% of the time, and as mentioned above, Texas Tech's percentage was 0.83%. These Ole Miss numbers aren't bad, in fact, I think they are pretty good.
As far as rushing statistics, Ole Miss is averaging 4.62 yards per attempt. Nationally, this puts Ole Miss at 36th in the nation in yards per attempt, which is a very good rate. As far as attempts per touchdowns, Ole Miss is scoring 1 touchdown for every 25.05 rushing attempt (476 attempts and 19 touchdowns). This ranks 68th nationally and puts Ole Miss near the top half of punching the ball in the endzone rushing the ball.
Michael Oher is the unquestioned leader of this offensive line and future top 10 pick in the NFL and much like Crabtree, would be silly for me to name every All-American team Oher is on, because it's probably every one. To put it simply, he is absolutely dominating. Michael Oher is to Ole Miss as Michael Crabtree is to Texas Tech.
Tackle John Jerry is on Steele's 2nd All-SEC team , as well as 1st team All-SEC according to the AP, and Ole Miss' other offensive line standout.
Conclusion:
A close matchup again, but a slight edge to Texas Tech. Ole Miss has one absolutely dominating tackle in Oher and Jerry is an All-SEC performer. It bothers me that Ole Miss has given up so many sacks relative to the number of passes. The Texas Tech line does a better job of protecting it's quarterback and is slightly better running the ball on a yards per attempt analysis.
I know that this is looking a little one-sided, but it's not even close to being over. Be patient Ole Miss fans.

How biased can you get......
At Texas Tech you have to hold a block for a fraction of a second. The QB has many many quick reads and dump offs. It’s why your running backs have so many receptions.
And…. you don’t have stiff defenses coming at you and when you did in Oklahoma you stunk.
Ole Miss’s line did good against Bama and Florida, two teams with great defenses. We also do great against LSU an Auburn. Another two teams with great defenses.
Averaging 30 points a game in the SEC means we will put close to 40 on your weak defense. More than enough to beat ya’ll. 38 – 28 Ole Miss.

Considering how many times Tech was on ESPN this season, I’d have thought you would bother watching a game before making statements like those.
After all is said and done, more is said than done.

I don't get it.
Why is it such a stretch to say that Texas Tech’s offense is better than Ole Miss’? There’s no doubt in my mind that the Rebels’ defense is superior to Texas Tech’s.
I’m glad you’re here, just relax a bit.
Go Raiders . . .

Go-Ahead Old Missy...
Show up on January 3rd. (someone must have took you on your expensive cotton bowl tickets, cause the game is on Friday, January 2nd!)
We will be there on January 2nd to point out every flaw in your defensive secondary!
Just, go back to your Grove, and sit underneath your “old missy” tent, and drink mixers while all your other fans are travelling back to Oxford, with sullen faces….
====
I wonder why you “old missy” fans haven’t created a “Old Missy SBNation Blog”?…
a) So we wont troll on your blogs and trash talk?…
b) Or is it because your still underneath your Greek Grove Tent from the home game losses of South Carolina(HC) and Vanderbilt?…

please keep things civil. You are a guest here and, while most of us would love to hear your viewpoints, this is a Texas Tech blog. You won’t find much sympathy for your cause, especially if you start up this mess of trash talking.

my point was who will show up the day after the game to eat crow and....
since ya’ll like facts and figures.
I know Texas Tech was number two at one point. I know Texas Tech is 11-1 and didn’t want to play an 8-4 team. But…..
You have only yourselves to blame. What did they expect to happen after the blow out loss to Oklahoma? Who did they expect to represent the Big 12 South after that game.
What did you expect after the sloppy defense in the Baylor game? Your last two games on national TV sealed your fate. You played your way down to the Cotton Bowl.
Texas Tech gave up 113 points in their last three games. A hundred more points than Ole Miss gave up in its last three games.
Texas Tech scored 112 points in its last three games. Ole Miss scored 135.
In the last three games Ole Miss out scored their opponents by 122 points. Texas Tech outscored thier opponents by one point.
No wonder you are all in such a bad mood. You have played yourselves into it.
Number one Big 12 plays number one SEC, Number 3 Big 12 plays number four SEC. Should be two good games. After they are over we will all know if the Big 12 offense out trump the SEC defense. I hoping its not a split.

Bad SEC offenses = Great SEC defensive statistics.
http://cfn.scout.com/2/821841.html
8. The SEC offenses were really that bad, and the defenses just weren’t that great.
The SEC’s defensive statistics look great, and while Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina and Ole Miss really could play a little D, they were helped immeasurably by the horrendous SEC attacks.
(and there is more…. click on the link)
Most SEC fans only see SEC football on TV.
Most SEC fans are totally biased fans due to the above statement. It’s not your fault that you don’t get to see how the BIG 12 has changed college football’s offensive mentallity. When Offenses are clicking, (not dripping), no defense can stop them from scoring.

yeah, let’s face it, Tennessee, Mississippi State, and LSU are bad teams this year. LSU’s defense is probably about the level of oklahoma state’s. And are you really including stats of a 4-8 Louisiana Monroe as why you’ll roll TTU?
I’m not one to say that it’s going to be a TTU blowout. Ole Miss hasn’t been blown out yet this year and have lost to a few mediocre/good teams by very few points. If Tech comes out flat again as in the first halves of the last three bowl games we’ve played or finishes flat like against UT, then there is a very good chance that Ole Miss can beat TTU.
Flat start: TTU falls behind 14-3 or so, falls to 28-10, and pushes back in the 2nd half to bring the game close within the last 5 minutes (win or lose)
Flat end: TTU goes ahead 21-0, slows up and goes into half 28-10 and goes scoreless in the 3rd quarter making another exciting 4th.
What I hope: Mike has TTU fired up and Tech plays their 3rd complete game of the season (KU, OSU were the first two).

Hey, don’t pick on the missies. They’re entitled to T-shirt fans who have never seen the inside of a college classroom just as much as UT or OU. Only why would you want a T-shirt from a team that has had such a bad record for so many years?
Tech has been to a bowl game every year since the Big 12 started. Ole Miss doesn’t have a single coach or player who has ever been to a bowl….except with other teams.

I will put an OleMiss pic icon if Tech loses. If Tech wins, you put a Texas Tech pic in your icon. How about it?

You struck a nerve(kayak). You mentioned being"flat". Have been bothered since the OU fiasco & the Baylor near miss. This is just me; but, didn’t feel that the team was emotinally ready/prepared for these games. I feel that is a/the coaching staff’s responsibility. And, with Leach hither & yon & not signed, the Heisman slight etc., am concerned that history will repeat. They need some strong motivating!

this is very true. then again, last year they came out flat for virginia and there wasn’t much of this drama. Same thing for the insight, the team didn’t get up for that. same deal for the cotton bowl against alabama, there wasn’t any major drama there. Maybe all this drama will keep the team’s head on the game, even if it’s not actually on the game.
also, for gods sakes Mike, sign your damn contract. I’m tired of people asking all the time.

Agree (on drama & contract). Way too much drama; hoping that it is a positive motivation & not a distraction to the team & our recruits.
Sign the contract Mike!
