Texas Tech

McKinner Dixon says "face".

Perhaps the most impressive improvement of the defense was the play of the maturation of the defensive line. Texas Tech went from 82nd in the nation, allowing 177.00 yards a game in 2007 to allowing 133.50 yards a game, good for 45th in the nation. It was a combination of new players as well as other players that just grew up a bit.

Starting with the ends, the arrival of McKinner Dixon gave Texas Tech two quality ends, who could rush the passer, the other standout being Brandon Williams. Rather than have just be a one-trick-pony with just one end that could be double-teamed, the arrival of Dixon signaled an end to focusing on just one side of the line. Dixon's arrival also meant that Texas Tech went from 26 sacks a game, 46th in the nation, to 30 sacks in 2008, good for 25th in the nation. That's significant improvement, and without belaboring the point too much, the conversation as to why Texas Tech defense improved can start here.

Colby Whitlock took his lumps as a freshman and learned quite a bit. Whitlock didn't get the recognition that he might have deserved this year, but the progression that he made from his freshman year to his sophomore year has been dramatic.

The surprise of the defensive line is perhaps Richard Jones. Jones was slotted behind Henley, but after Henley was injured in the year, Jones stepped in and did a decent job.

The biggest problem with the line, is Ole Miss' strength, which is making tackles behind the line of scrimmage. There's no push amongst the defensive tackles other than Whitlock and along the ends it's the "Williams and Dixon Show" and that's it. Texas Tech is 106th in the nation in tackles for loss and I think it was all to evident against the Sooners how this group can tend to be pushed around. Granted, there are some individual players (i.e. Whitlock and Dixon) that still do a good job of stopping the run, but for the most part there's plenty to be worried about with the Ole Miss offense.

I should also emphasize that the rushing defense got worse as the season progressed. Texas Tech did give up 161 yards against Kansas, and I realize that this was a blowout win, but gave up 186 to Oklahoma State, somewhat expected, 299 to Oklahoma and 229 to Baylor and the incredible Robert Griffin. Not to mention, Texas Tech gave up 11 rushing touchdowns in those last three games, and only gave up 10 in the previous 9 games.

Things have got to tighten up.

Mississippi

Peria Jerry, he is hurting people.

These guys are good.

For the year, the most yards in any given game that the Rebels gave up is 131 against Vanderbilt. The Rebels' last 4 games weren't against the best competition (Auburn, La. Monroe, LSU and Mississippi State) but during these last 4 games these guys only gave up 75, 72, 37 and -51 yards.

Yep, these guys are good.

The leader of this group is Peria Jerry, pictured above, and is an absolute beast. An astounding 17 tackles for a loss and 6 sacks from the defensive tackle position. Peria is probably the highest rated defensive tackle on NFL draft boards in 2009. There's a couple of guys that you should pay attention to on the Ole Miss defense, but Jerry is, without a doubt, one of them. He's going to play on Sundays.

Right behind Jerry in terms of production are defensive end Kentrell Lockett, who, for the year, has 11 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks and defensive tackle Greg Hardy, leading the team in sacks with 8.5 for the year. I should also note that Lockett has been much better in the 2nd half of the season, where he registered 8 of his 11 TFL's in the last 6 games.

Ted Laurent, Marcus Tillman and Emmanuel Stephens all dominate the team stats in tackles for loss and once again proves that this is an active defensive line that is doing a tremendous job of getting penetration, pushing opposing offensive lines backwards and making plays.

I've saved the best statistics for last. As good as Texas Tech has been defensively, especially in terms of sacks, Mississippi has been on another level. For the year, Ole Miss is 5th in the nation in sacks with 37 for the year and averaging over 3 a game. If you want to look at tackles for loss, the Rebels are 1st in the nation at 8.92 PER GAME! How about them apples? For the year, Ole Miss has had 107 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for 454 yards and I find that utterly amazing. This is going to be a real test for the Texas Tech offensive line that only gave up 5 sacks for the entire year and only lost 150 yards rushing (58 of those yards were Harrell's) for the year with Baron Batch only losing 12 yards for the year on 111 carries and Shannon Woods only losing 11 yards for the year on 135 carries.

Conclusion:

Ole Miss may have the best defensive line in the nation with 4 or 5 guys that could be playing on Sundays. They're just loaded with talent up and down the line. The Texas Tech defensive line has been improved, but this one's really not close.

Lines

What will be interesting seeing a team that has given up (what did you say 5 sacks?) take on D line that has been completely dominating teams now that everyone is healthy. It should be fun to watch (Obviously I’m hoping for more fun from the Ole Miss point of view :) )

It will be fun to see how your run game and your QB are able to handle the amount of pressure these guys have been able to bring this year.

11 sacks. 5 before OU. 6 after.

It should be a good match up in the trenches. Where Tech has been successful in the run is when teams over-play the pass. We are not (obviously) a run first, pass second team. We don’t have a power running game, and we’re OK with that. 20 carries a game combined for our backs is about what to expect, versus twice that many in other offenses. We’re generally happy with a 100 yard combined rushing game. We’re going to come out with 4 receivers and 1 back on most plays, 5 receivers and an empty backfield on others, and a 2 back set only a handful of times. And just because they are lined up in the backfield doesn’t mean we aren’t sending them out on routes. If you are used to playing 7 in the box, that leaves you playing zone somewhere and a receiver is open. Harrell has been pretty good at reading the coverage and knowing where to go pre-snap. Disguising the coverage and playing more of a nickel D gives you the best chance to man up and force Harrell to go through his progressions. Just don’t forget you’re going to have to almost always double Crabtree. The catch (and where this gets back to the running game) is that if you start cheating too much in coverage, leaving your safeties in cover 2 and moving LBs out to cover slot receivers, Harrell will see it and check to the run.

There are 2 things that are key for you guys (Ole Miss), and they don’t have much to do with stopping the run or getting lots of pressure.

First is making sure that the pass coverage is tight enough to make Harrell go beyond his 2nd read. If so, you’ll be able to get some pressure. If not, he gets rid of the ball long before the pressure can get to him. Where in a traditional offense it may take 3-4 seconds for a pass play to develop, Tech throws quick, short passes. Rarely does Harrell have the ball more than about 2 seconds. See the comments about leaving 7 in the box above.

If the only goal of your D line in the game is to get pressure, you could be in for a long night. OU was able to shut Tech down and get their sacks by focusing on filling the passing lanes with bodies first, getting their hands up, and waiting for the pocket to collapse in order to get pressure. Meanwhile, Harrell was unable to see the middle of the field and was having to wait for a receiver to get where he could see him in the flat. OU then knew where he was throwing and was able to make plays on the ball and sure tackles. It was the only game where Tech was stopped all year, and it wasn’t due to stopping the run.

I think when favoring one defensive line over another, you have to look at the opposing O-lines. I think the Tech D-line will have an easier time against the Ole Miss front than vice versa.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

SEC is an overrated conference

THe truth is that most of the numbers are inflated because the SEC sucks generally on offense. Yes there are a couple of teams have have better than average offense. However Florida which is the best is far from the top 10 in the nation offensively!

As far as OIe Miss is concerned, they are just as overrated as any team in the SEC. The numbers against the run seem pretty impressive until you look at the realities of the teams they play and how those teams actually fare for the whole season offensively and then compare that against non conference teams. Thus there is nothing impressive about Ole Miss defense in general.

Even so, Any team on any given day can beat any other team regardless of how good or bad they are. But Its not right to compare apples and oranges.

Example here.

Florida which played Ole Miss. had 124 yards rushing and 354 yards passing.
While Ole Miss Rushed for 140 yards but only had 185 yards passing. Turnover margin kept Ole Miss in this game and made the score closer than it really was.

LSU. That was a game I did get to see part of. LSU QB could not hit the broad side of a extra wide Barn that day. Passing was so bad it was horrible. Ole miss sold out to stop the Run with 8 to 9 in the box. If the QB could have just hit a couple of extra passes, LSU wins that game.

Same is true for Auburn. Ole Miss sold out to stop the run and dared Auburn to beat them with the Pass. This is the standard defense setup in the SEC. Most teams sell out to stop the run. Thus only those teams which can have at least some minor success passing wins the games. Auburn has a horrible offense and they killed themselves with turnovers which auburn was in the red zone twice and in Ole Miss territory on the third interception. Ole Miss simple survived because Auburn had no real offensive threat.

Alabama game Alabama rushed for over 100 and passed for 219 in a very sloppy game. Both teams looked horrible as far as execution is concerned. Ole Miss rushed for 158 but passed for 201. Ole Miss and Alabama had turnover fever in the game as well which killed each teams advantage at the time.

Thus when you look at Ole Miss you will find that they win when they play a team which is struggling offensively or commit horrible errors with turnovers. The Florida game which Ole Miss won, the defining events which helped Ole Miss was the turnover battle. Ole Miss caused 3 turnovers which led directly to 21 points. Florida had more offensive output than Ole Miss but committed the errors of multiple turnovers which caused them to lose.

Thus the truth is that Ole Miss is not a power house offensively or defensively. They are however very good in getting turnovers and using those turnovers to their advantage. In game with few to no turnovers by the other team they face, Ole Miss loses.

Ole Miss against the pass is horrible in all the good teams which they play, all the good team post 350 to 400 yards passing. Tech should be able to rush for more than100 and pass for 600.

Ole Miss is a rushing team. They live and die with the run as they do not have power passing game. Thus Tech’s success against the Rebels will be at stopping the rush and forcing Ole Miss to have to pass to stay in the game. If Ole Miss has to pass to stay in the game because the run is shut down, then they will find themselves in a blow out special game where they can be humiliated.

But it comes down to the effort of actually really putting a real effort into stopping the run. Unlike the Big 12, the SEC is about running the ball. Teams that can run win while those whose rush is shut down loses.

Thus Tech should concentrate on litterally selling out to stop the run and committe to the 1 or 2 deep man under with run support priority scheme.

Its that obvious of a game plan that its not even funny!

ole Miss has not played our o-line...

Even with all that pressure what is their record? Oh that’s right 4 loses. I know very close but loses indeed. Ole Miss has sold tickets well, somewhere around 25,000 but let’s give them 5,000 more so let’s say they sell 30,000. New capacity @ the Cotton Bowl is 92,000 so if it is a sellout—— Tech home game!!!!!!!!!!! So if it can becoome Jones East then our O-line will do just fine. Also, if they don’t get to the QB then Ole Miss has been torched andt they have not seen anything like our passing game since 2003 and they gaven up 660—- look for something similar as this is Harrell’s last Tech game!!!! Wreck’em Tech Keep Leach

For what it’s worth, capacity for this game is 88,000…not sure how, but that’s from the Cotton Bowl people.

Tech vs Ole Miss

will be a great game……….for about 1/3 of the game. When Leach sees where the weaknesses are for the Miss D he will strategize a huge beatdown. I really do respect the Miss D, but they are going to be rudely awakened when they go up against the Tech O. And, the Tech D should fare much better than anticipated against the Miss O. This looks like a huge party for Techs outgoing class of seniors.
How about Tech 55, Miss 21?

The game

I think you guys are under estimating us. Not that I am saying we are going to win, but this game could be very close. I undersatnd you being 11 -1 and us being 8 – 4 but I think the way our team is playing right now they are quite scary. As long as we stay healthy and play like we have been, it should make us a great team to play against you guys.

While it is not a secret our secondary has been weak, they have greatly improved as the season went on. With the increased play of our defensive line it has def helped our secondary out. We have also been able to only rush 4 and still be able to get to the QB. If our secondary does not have a good game we are going to be in for one looooooong game. But I’m hoping that with the kind of pass rush we have the ability to provide it should be able to help them out.

On Pablo M’s comments:
While even though Florida “lost the game themselves” they did fumble the ball. If you watch the replay our team was playing with a vengence to try and strip the ball every chance possible and apparently it worked out for us. Our D Line was also introducing themselves to Mr Tebow a lot which I think made them have to worry a lot more on incoming bodies instead of securing the ball. But we did force some of those turn overs (and missed 2 other chances for turn overs)

I am truely looking forward to a great game against you guys. I was there in 2003 when you guys beat us so I’m hoping we fair a little better myself haha I had to watch the 2002 game on TV and was not so happy with that outcome either… but I am never really happy when we lose so it’s nothing personal :)

I do enjoy reading these match ups, but I do think statisics in no way tell the whole story. I know that you have not watched the Rebels play this season so statistics are the best way for you to analyze them. I understand they are (and most people on this site) are going to be Tech biased, but it is still nice to read from the other sides point of view sometimes.

Thanks for stopping by

and adding to the conversation.

You’re right, it’s not the best way to look at matchups, but I’ve found it to be a great exercise to get ready for the game and hopefully everyone is enjoying the information. I truly believe that this is strength (UM defense) vs. strength (TT offense) and cannot wait.

I’m interested to see how the UM secondary plays the TT receivers. Again, cannot wait. Should be fun.

D-LINE

Don’t think that Ratliff has 5 sacks. I believe it is more like 0.5, You have forgotten charlie hustle #53 Daniel Howard. If you watched any of the games you would have noticed that alot of the sacks registered were caused by Howard coming off the edge and forcing the QB to Dixon. Not only that he was credited with 3 sacks, according to the statitician. To his credit it was more like 6. All that was done while playing either hand down or standing up as the joker and only getting about 20% of the snaps. I like his ratio fo snaps to sacks, Sadler needs to wake up and get the playmakers on the field instead of sticking to the base defense that got our butts handed to us in the OU game. When you have a prolific offense you can afford to blitz more, again I refer to the OU game and the way that they blitzed us from every concievable angle known to man, and it worked. Scoring alot of points on offense can be an aide to the defense. Stop playing scared and attack the offense instead of playing base scheme after base scheme. Any good offensive coordinator could be a star if you know what defense your up against every snap. With the personell we have, and as deep as we are, there is no reason that we should ever get tired of attacking. Bring it from everywhere.

Didn't forget him

Just had to cut it off at some point (actually I just ran out of time. No disrespect to Howard. And I think Ratliff shows to be having “.5” it’s just that the “.” is hard to see.

Records

Ole Miss lost to Wake Forest on a field goal as time expired. They also blew a 17-0 lead against South Carolina. On Ole Miss’ final drive of the Vanderbilt game, Dexter McCluster fumbled on the opponent’s 2 yard line. A few breaks and Ole Miss could be 11-1. There was also a 4 point loss to a top 5 team.

Texas Tech tried their hardest to give away that Nebraska game. Baylor had them beat, just couldn’t finish the game. I’m sure I don’t have to remind anyone how close the Texas game was. That would make Texas Tech 8-4 when you take into account the most embarrassing game played by a top ten team this season.

The records could be reversed and it would not change how well either of the teams have played this year. You can’t look at Ole Miss’ record and pretend they don’t deserve to play Texas Tech.

I'm amazed Tech isn't in the BCS Championship game!!!!!

I mean as great as ya’ll are and as great as the Big 12 is……. Surely you should be playing each other in the BCS championship game.

Wait…… not realistic to have two Big 12 teams in the Championship Game, well certainly the Raiders should be playing USC in the Rose Bowl or Penn State in the Oragne. Of course if there were two Big 12 teams in the BSC Championship Game, the Red Raiders wouldn’t be one of them.

Nope, you got stuck with little Ole Miss. To bad. Nothing to gain, everything to lose.

No one to blame but yourselves. We saw the Oklahoma and Baylor games. After that what the heck did you expect. Eight or nine SEC teams would have done better than the Raiders in those two games.

You talk about stats built up against the weak sisters of a no defense league. Give me a break.
