Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

2009 Signal Caller

Good morning fellow Techsters. I was at a Christmas party Saturday talking to a former players' Dad. We were discussing next years' QB situation. Is T. Potts the front runner for the starting job or do we have a hot Freshman that will compete?  I told him I wasn't sure but I knew where to find out. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  Beat Ole Miss. Go Tech!!!

It won't matter

because according to the media, we will only finish at best 4th in the division, and besides we are a gimmick and/or system offense.

Duh

We’re Texas Tech. This season was a total fluke. Lets hope it NEVER happens again.

Potts is #1 but will face stiff competition from Thursday night standout Seth Doege.

Hopefully Doege coming up from behind

will stimulate Potts in his eternal quest to figure out how to throw a 5 yard route at something less than hypersonic velocities

If the new left side of the O-line can keep the rushers at bay, Potts will bring a new element to the offense – the deep strike. Not to diminish Harrell by any means, but the 30 yard frozen rope is not his forte. Potts will keep defenses from flooding the 5-15 yard zones like OU did by making the deep pass a very real threat. Like mojavereject said, he just needs to settle down and take some of that zip off a 5 yard screen pass. Hopefully with Doege nipping at his heels, Potts will max out his potential.

yup. kid has all the upside in the world, I’d even go as far as saying that he’s the first NFL-caliber body that we have. the question is, does he have the NFL mind and the NFL touch.

Potts adds the deep threat. If Crabs sticks around (substitute Eddy B. if he doesn’t), he won’t be able to outrun the quarterback any longer.

Doege, believe it or not, adds a mobility threat that you wouldn’t think you’d see from a kid whose blown out his knees twice. The question for him is if he’ll have the maturity plus the arm strength to run the offense and throw 40-50 passes a game. Expect to see the quarterback keep the ball on a zone read more often.

Taylor Potts

Seth Doege

Jacob Karam

Wes Welker can't be stopped.

Just dreaming…

Wes Welker can't be stopped.

Translation:

Taylor Potts has a cannon for an arm, and Seth Doege has "it", but Jacob Karam is the "Steve Young".

Wes Welker can't be stopped.

I think Potts

will be the choice, if he can soften those short ones. Doege, if his knees hold up, might have the best overall game, though. I am not sure about the other three (Loucks, Sheffield, Riley), but Potts and Doege may be the frontrunners, especially Potts because of the experience. Either way, next year could possibly match this one if any of the five step up and produce. I am kind of excited thinking about it because we have had some great signings the last couple of years. GUNS UP!

If Doege has had 2 serious knee injuries, I’d hate to go with him, only to have it happen again and leave us starting over. I hate to hold it against the kid if he’s worked hard to get healthy and all things were equal otherwise, but like “Pilk” says, the experience, and the stunning arm Potts has makes me want to see what he can do.

by Plano Jeff on Dec 23, 2008 8:45 AM CST reply actions

Doege’s knee injuries: according to everything I’ve heard, they were both freak accidents and he was young enough that his knees have made a full recovery from it.

by kayakyakr on Dec 23, 2008 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

Didn’t know that. So would he be a Junior after two years behind Potts(assuming he’s 2nd in line)? After I broke my collar bone and separated my shoulder in Football practice, my linebackers coach told me laughingly, “Freak accidents only happen to ‘Freaks.’”

Yes, Potts, Potts, Doege, Doege, Karam, Lee/Young/?

by kayakyakr on Dec 23, 2008 5:01 PM CST up reply actions

this is assuming that Potts holds of Doege and Doege holds off Karam.

by kayakyakr on Dec 23, 2008 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

Doege

I have to think Doege was a little bit of an experiment. He looked to be great as a sophomore in HS, but didn’t play for 2 years after that due to injury. Leach already had Potts in the stable being groomed and figured to get 2 years out of him. If Doege was to be the next Joe Montana, then practicing 1-2 years in a college program would help him to heal and polish his game. The problem is, he hasn’t seen a live game in 3 years now. If he was the next Montana, I think we would know it by now, and people would be talking about him in more definitive terms. But the comments seem to indicate that unless there is some dramatic improvement, Potts is the guy.

got a good look at Tech's (possible)signal caller Potts...

a couple of weeks ago in church at Abilene. He’s an impressive physical specimen! In high school, he had that knack of making things happen – just like Graham has had the past few years. Let’s all remember, Potts had a serous offer to go to Michigan AFTER his Texas Tech commit. I believe he is a very mature player who knows he has what he takes (confidence factor). He knew all along that he would play behind GH and wait until his Jr. and Sr. years for his chance to shine. As great as this season has been, it is entirely possible that Potts may be part of an even MORE special Red Raider team – more likely his Senior year than next. I like the future when it comes to QB’s!!! And it feels GREAT to have entered a new realm as a Texas Tech fan – the realm of believing that competing for a Championship is very, very possible year in and year out!

The Abilene Eagles had a QB....

that passed all over the defenses of in the old 3-5A. He looked impressive when he was put in at the end of the some of the games this year. He looks bigger than I remember him and not as skinny. As I recall, one of his favorite targets in High School was a WR by the name of Lyle Leong.

by ttu_porters on Dec 26, 2008 8:21 AM CST up reply actions

I am not too worried about Potts...

other than his release. He no doubt has the most prototypical NFL build of any QB in the Leach era, and most likely the strongest arm. The one thing that concerns me is his release can look a little slow and unnatural at times. Perhaps this is why he gets so much power into his throws, but it looks like he almost side-arms the ball sometimes. Anyway, it should be very interesting to see a new QB behind center next year. Even though I will miss Harrell quite a bit, it’s always exciting to bring in new blood.
