LAJ: Mike Leach to Discuss Washington Husky Job

According to LAJ's Don Williams Mike Leach was in Seattle to discuss the Washington Husky job with university officials. I'm just going to blockquote from Williams' story, but this is according to Williams' source:

"As of now, he hasn’t been offered the job,’’ a source told The A-J on Tuesday night.

The same source said although Washington is 0-11 with one game left, if UW officials decide to zero in on Tech’s coach, their potential to hire Leach away shouldn’t be underestimated.

"I don’t care if they are 0-11,’’ the source said. "They’re the state university; he would bring a national flair to the state, and he’d be able to recruit there at a level he’s not able to recruit in Texas. He’s still the third or fourth level of recruitment in Texas. At Washington, he’ll be the first. All that’s true, and a man of vision such as Mike Leach considers these things.’’

This strikes me as strange and a little too surreal. On the same day that Leach won the AP's Big 12 Coach of the Year with OU's Bob Stoops he's interviewing with Washington.

That's a hit in the gut.

And rather than actually have Leach comment on what a great award this is, we have his defensive coordinator, Ruffin McNeill, giving his concession speech:

"I think it’s a great tribute to coach Leach," defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill said. "He’s been consistent ever since he’s been at Tech, so I think that was a great honor for Mike and well-deserving."

Of course in the background, you have Gerald Myers sounding a little bit befuddled about the situation and that he has not contacted Leach since Saturday evening's win agaist Baylor.

Myers said he had not talked to Leach since Saturday evening after the Red Raiders’ 35-28 win over Baylor in the regular-season finale. Myers said no one from Washington nor Leach had contacted him about any discussion between the two.

What?

I thought the deal was that Myers was going to start talking contract right after the season was completed. That was Saturday and it sounds like Leach gave him Sunday and Monday to start talking numbers and that didn't happen.

If Leach doesn't sign a long-term extension at Texas Tech I don't think it will be hard for me to figure out where I need to look for a little bit of blame.

Myers also seems to think that Leach would be the nice guy and contact him if he was looking elsewhere:

"I think he would if he’s serious about it," Myers said. "I think he would let me know. So I don’t know. He wouldn’t have to tell me, but I haven’t heard from anybody, the coaches or anybody else about that."

Right.

There's a couple of things that don't make sense to me and/or bother me about this entire story:

  • The only solace to the story is this bit about Leach confirming on Monday that he wants to stay at Texas Tech:
  • On Monday, Leach told The Associated Press that he “absolutely” wants to stay at Tech.

  • Why is Leach and his wife flying a commercial jet if they're being wooed by UW? Don't you think that a booster could spring for a private jet or something?
  • If Leach leaves between now and the bowl game, who coaches the offense? I've got no idea and I'm pretty sure it would not be pretty.

The third or fourth level of recruiting in Texas is ten times better than the top tier of recruiting in Washington.

Let’s see:
Go from consistent 3.xx-average rating classes and winning recruits on a somewhat regular basis over Oklahoma, Texas, A&M, Oklahoma State and Missouri …
or
Try to recruit against USC anywhere.

As much as Texas is said to have dibs on almost whomever they want, USC is that much more elite in recruiting, especially on the west coast. I dare the next coach at Washington, unless he’s freaking Jesus himself, to pull a single recruit away from USC in four full seasons.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

yeah, it’s not a pretty situation Leach would be walking into in Washington. He’s a strange man, so it could happen, but I wouldn’t consider it to be a likely thing at this point.

As I’ve said many times before, Leach does these interviews for the free vacation and the chance to get to talk to other people and see other places. He took his wife with him on this trip, flew first class on a commercial airline. Sounds like a vacation to me.

so Big K, my question is:

after reading the blog under LAJ’s Don Wms article…..Do WE have anyone with a private jet if we have to go get Art Briles for an interview? Cause I have access to a 4 seat single prop job that CAN reach speeds of up to 180 nauticle MPH. I’m stressed here! I wish I possessed your calmness. I’m affraid Captain’s POed about not getting hid proper respect this Summer. And my answer to Seth’s question on who “would” coach our bowl is again, Art!!! He was on our staff and has, I believe this here, he has ever bit the offensive genius as the Capt. Plus he won’t be doing anything, right? BU is not bowl eligible 4-8(2-6).

by Plano Jeff on Dec 3, 2008 12:02 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don’t think we should jump to Art Briles as our Immediate fix to losing the captain (which, while it’s a possibility, isn’t something you should stress over. I think this comes up every year and the set of schools that are looking this year doesn’t scare me yet. Even if they did, there’s nothing you can do except be sad that he’s leaving). I’m almost certain that we can pull one of our two Leach-taught Coordinators back to Lubbock to run the offense, so that opens up defensive minded coaches to be head coach. There’s a hot-list going around, plus a rumor that Tubs will be on the market soon.

by kayakyakr on Dec 3, 2008 12:28 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

would tubbs come here?

Or could we pull away, would Muschamp want to come here? I can’t even imagine our offensive guys working with Tubberville on the D. Heaven. Well, we’ll see what happens in the next few days. I kind of think UW will fall through for our dear old captain. Obviously the wrong thread for that talk. I just came here first because looked like alot of action over here.

by Plano Jeff on Dec 3, 2008 3:28 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If the unthinkable happens

It will be because of his personality, not because he thinks he can recruit against USC or any other school. I don’t think it’s just about winning for Leach. I think Leach likes the underdog role, likes doing more with less, likes the challenge, and like the environment. I could see him getting bored in a role where he can and is expected to win every game. But put him in a place where he can defy the odds, and he’s licking his chops.

by NM99 on Dec 3, 2008 8:33 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Improves negotiations

From Leach’s point of view, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have another offer (or potential offer) in his back pocket when negotiating his deal with Tech. He did have a historic season and was red-hot going into the Oklahoma game…but that game and a squeaker against Baylor took a little of that edge off.

If you are in demand, you have to strike while the iron is hot in coaching…so lining up suitors to get a better deal at Tech only makes sense.

I will say that Myers is a moron for not calling Leach as soon as he drove his car into the driveway after the Baylor game. I certainly wouldn’t assume Leach is going to stay if I was him.

I’ll be glad when he is finally signed and this is over!!

by Techsan71 on Dec 3, 2008 8:58 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think

he really wants this job in Washington. He applied for it the year Ty was hired, and he’s applied again. Face it, he wants out of Lubbock – that’s why he’s willing to interview anywhere there is interest in him.

Meyers should be run out of town on a rail for not calling Leach the night of the Baylor game and getting this started. I guarantee you part of Leach’s thought process is, “Well, U-dub clearly wants me as they have contacted me as soon as they could…Meyers, on the other hand, has an office within spitting distance and hasn’t called yet.”

I don’t think this is a negotiating ploy because I’m sure Tech will offer a package that puts him near the top 10 of coaches in the country. He knows that, too.

His telling comment to me was where he said he’d been here nine years and that was longer than most jobs and marriages…he’s looking to punch out, from my interpretation.

Meyers better have three or four candidates to replace Leach on speed dial, because I really think he’s gone – and that pisses me off.

by Tech92 on Dec 3, 2008 9:16 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, one more thing

All the above is obviously assuming UW wants Leach…they have a nice stable of candidates to choose from; all as qualified, and some more so, than Leach. But if they want him, I think he’s a Husky.

by Tech92 on Dec 3, 2008 9:17 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Meyers not calling Leach right after that Baylor game makes me sick and nauseau. Maybe Meyers think that since the Clemson job and Tennessee jobs were closed, he was off the hook. This whole situation just pisses me off. Who do we turn to next? Here’s my list:

1) Art Briles ( I really like this guy, fiery and runs the same offense)
2) Chris Peterson, Boise State Coach
3) Univ of Houston coach, name is not coming up right now
4) Offensive Coordinator from Mizzou, again name is coming up blank
5) Any strong defensive minded coach like a Will Muschamp as long at the offensive system stays in place.

by WreckerRaider on Dec 3, 2008 9:24 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don’t think we could buy Briles away from Baylor. We might be able too, but I think it would be a longshot.

I like the Chris Peterson pick, the only concern I have would be his recruiting ability in Texas, but he is a great coach and would be a great pick.

UH has Sumlin tied up, but we could get Dana back,

OC of Mizzou just signed to be Wyomings new coach.

For tough Def coaches I like Tyrone Nix South Carolina, Dick Bumpus TCU and we could call him bumpstache, John Chavis from Tenn.

We cannot take this the way we took the screwing by the BCS

If we ever want to have a chance at kicking ut and beating ou in the same season we had better hold on to the good captain. This talk of who else we “could” get is absurd! We have the absolute best fit for the RaiderNation right here – right now. Lets do all we can to keep him. Get on the horn, cell phone, blogs, DT, whatever it takes. This is so much BS, we are on the verge of some very good years and cannot afford to piss it all away by sitting on our hands.

by blackbeard on Dec 3, 2008 10:19 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Meyers is an idiot

Seriously, have we ever been this good and in the spot light more than this season… NO!
The deal to Leach needs to happen today and it better be a good one at that. He deserves Mack Brown or Bob Stoops money at the least. This guys has put Tech on the map and wins with less. Forget all the talk about who would be a good replacement because there is none. Pull you heads out of your a** and realize what Leach has done for us and pay him. Do we really want to go backwards to the Spike days and be in the middle to bottom of the conference and play spoiler every now and then. Meyers need to be fired if the deal goes bad. Think about it Raiders!!!

by Raider1992 on Dec 3, 2008 10:50 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think the wildcard in all this mess is the opinion I have that Leach wants to leave Tech/Lubbock. If Washington wants him and offers him a competitive package, I don’t think there’s anything Meyers can do to keep him.

If the talkling heads on the radio, who have more contacts in the college football world than all of us combined, are correct, Leach has wanted leave since 2005 for whatever reason. I’ve heard twice today on the radio that Leach likes Lubbock, but not enough to commit to a marriage there unless he has no other options. The only way he stays in Lubbock is if Washington doesn’t offer him the job. There are a lot of good candidates who want the gig there, so it’s not a done deal by any means.

What irks me is that today they are saying Leach and Meyers have still not spoken. He got back from Seattle yesterday around 1 pm, according to one report.

If we do have to make a change, though, I’d like to see us get a young guy who has SW ties and Texas ties. The high school coaching community is very close knit in this state and it’s tough for an outsider to break in and get the quality kids. It took Leach 7 years.

by Tech92 on Dec 3, 2008 10:58 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's why Art Briles should be #1 on the list IF WE LOSE LEACH.

The HS coaches in Texas LOVE him. He can get into any house in the state and look at what he has done since leaving Stephenville. Maybe he can keep what works with this offensive system, tweak it a bit to have a little more conventional run game kind of like OSU’s and build our defense. I don’t want Leach to go any more than any of you, but if we have to look for a coach, I can’t imagine a better pick. While he did play for UH, he graduated from Tech and coached on this staff and he’s a West Texas guy through and through.
I don’t want Tech to become the Tulsa Basketball stepping stone of college football. They made it to 2 Sweet 16s and lost their coach twice (i think, use any analogy here, that’s just where i went to grad school). If we HAVE to do this, let’s do it right.

by Plano Jeff on Dec 3, 2008 12:22 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We Know Nothing...Believe Me I Know

Coach Leach could be using this a negotiation ploy. He hold all the cards, great season, great recruiting class, and plenty of national attention. Tech will offer him the world, and if he wants to stay in Lubbock, he will stay.

On the other hand (as has been pointed out by Tech92) if he want to leave Lubbock, then he’s gone. I don’t think Myers could have changed his mind, even if he called right after Baylor game.

So what’s on Coach Leach’s mind? Does he want to leave Lubbock, or he ready to stay. We just don’t know…I know.

by SenorSackRemembered on Dec 3, 2008 11:11 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

"I will say that Myers is a moron..."

… for not having dealt with Leach’s contract before the beginning of the season. What possible reason could there have been to not address this already?
“Uh… well uh… We thought we were going to have a really special year at the beginning of the season, so we wanted to wait and make sure we would need to give him even more money than we might have agreed on otherwise…”???

by Houston Raider on Dec 3, 2008 11:29 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dunno

To his (Myers) credit, Leach having a contract only makes him more “happy” with the school (in theory) and doesn’t keep him here any more than his current contract does. I can see that the school throwing money at him would give Leach more “warm fuzzies”, but seriously, after last season (another “3rd in the south” kind of effort) was anyone ready to throw an excessive amount at Leach? If we were again 8-4 or even 9-3, does anyone raise significant complaints if Leach leaves for UW?

I like Leach a lot, I WANT him to stay, and I am in favor of making him among the (if not THE) highest paid coaches in the conference, but I don’t fault Myers for waiting till the end of the season to update the contract. (Now, I DO fault him for not updating it now that the season is over if he hasn’t done so) But considering where we were in August and Mike Leach’s relative position at that time, I don’t think it’s fair to “hind-sight” issues with the summer. (I think Leach would have been renegotiated before the year (altho I don’t know how much) had he not made such an obvious play for the Miami job)

Again, I like our coach a lot, I think he has personality and ability, but if Tech92 is right and he wants out, then the contract isn’t gonna change that. I HOPE this is not the case and that Mike Leach stays put. In the absolute WORST case that he leaves, no matter who else is in the mix, Myers better make a serious run at Muschamp. Partly because I think he’s a great coach who is going to make noise, and partly because (since he is a great coach, IMO) I want him off the ’horns.

by HeeroTX on Dec 3, 2008 12:15 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he has 2-3 years left on his contract why offer him one this summer. They just re-did his contract 2 years ago when he was supposed to leave Tech to go somewhere.

by ST04 on Dec 3, 2008 12:26 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As I recall...

Leach’s agent wanted to renegotiate the contract last summer and Gerald assured him that they would do so after the end of this season. I don’t know about you, but even I could see this year had the potential to be something really special. Even if it only turned out to be another 8 or 9 win season, it seems that it would have been a reasonable thing to do.
Leach’s salary this year was not even in the top half of all coaches in the Big 12. Does anyone think he shouldn’t have been in the top half? Do we expect the team to finish in the top half?
I just think Gerald should have made more effort to make him more “happy” with the school or try to give him a few “warm fuzzies.” And a newly negotiated, solid package might have kept him off of a few more schools’ target list…

If wants to leave.....

That seems right that if he wants to move on. But is also interesting that he has indicated at least twice in the media that he isn’t in a hurry to leave and he wants to stay. So is he lying or what? Anyway, UW doesn’t seem to fit his offense because until they build an indoor stadium then weather will always be a concern especially the rain and that is why former coach James had so much success because he ran the ball for the bad weather games. It’s almost noon on 12/3….any new developments in this? My last point on all this is if Leach were leaving, would he have gone out and recruited these last handful of great recruits? Doesn’t sound like a man on the way out to me….more of a negotiating ploy which makes good sense from a financial standpoint.

Is there anything we as fans can do at this point? Call for the ousting of Meyers would be my first thought……

I do agree with all the posts above, we can offer all the money in the world, it’s up to Leach on what he wants to do.

Don't Hang Myers .... Yet

What if Myers approached Leach at the beginning of the year, and Leach told him he would have to wait until the end of the season. Leach was not ready to sign a long term contract.
So what does Myers and Leach do now. If they annouce that Leach would like to wait until the end of season, which would fuel speculations that Leach want to leave, which would distract the team, and kill recruiting. Neither Leach nor Myers (nor any Tech fan) would want that.
So instead, Myers takes all the heat and the team is focused. Recruiting is hurt, minimally.

by SenorSackRemembered on Dec 3, 2008 12:14 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dayum, this is not panic-mode people. Calm, Rationalize.

What we know:
Washington has not offered Leach the job. They have offered Chis Peterson and as far as anyone can tell, Nick Saban (who has connections to the athletic staff at UW) is pushing Pat Hill and against Mike Leach.

What we know:
Chancellor Hance is handling the negotiations to redo Mike Leach’s contract. Meyers is involved, but not as the primary front-man.

What I believe:
We were closer to losing Leach to Miami than we are, currently, to losing Leach to Washington.

All we can do:
Mike Leach is the coach of Texas Tech University and that will remain to be the case until anyone says something otherwise. Don’t freak out, I’m still chilling at Defcon 4. If I jump up to 2, then you can start panicking, but it’s not time yet.

And now, just for fun, hotlist:
Chris Peterson
Kyle Whittingham
Gary Patterson (yes, even though he’s a dick, he’s done a good job at TCU)
 Tommy Tubberville

I’d actually rather not jump to Art Briles as a first step, but the process needs to be fast in order to not lose this pretty awesome recruiting class we have coming in.

I want to keep Leach but.....

If he leaves jump on the Romeo Crannell bandwagon! He was an assistant @ Tech with Steve Sloan and has NFL head coaching experience and he is a very defensive guy. Bring in Dykes or Holgerson for the offense and we could have something. I don’t want Leach to leave, in fact we should hire Crannell no matter what!! The extra help on defense could hurt. Wreck’em Tech Keep Leach

by techgolf44 on Dec 3, 2008 2:58 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My HOT List

First of all, I want Leach to stay and get a big, fat contract extension. BUT, if he decides to leave, here are the coaches I would want to hire in his place.

1. Art Briles – This guy is amazing. He played 3 ranked teams close and brought in Robert Griffin III, who I think will be an amazing player by his senior year. I can see Briles leaving Baylor for Tech, because it is basically impossible to win at Baylor consistently. No one wants to play there, unless they can’t get into UT, TAMU, Tech. Plus, he’s a West Texas man.

2. Chris Petersen – Made Boise State the premier non-BCS program. He must realize that with Boise State, he might go to a BCS bowl every 3-4 years, but he has no shot at a national title. Plus, the smurf turf is an eyesore. The only problem is, he’s not a West Texas man.

3. June Jones – Ok, so it is very unlikely that he will leave SMU, but everyone knows that they are pretty much hopeless. Sure, their offense is improved, but they’re still 1-11 this season and it will be at least 2 more years until they can challenge for a C-USA championship. Even then, a BCS bowl is 4+ years off and SMU has no shot at a national championship. Jones is a great fit, because his offense is similar to the Air Raid and he is apparently pretty good at recruiting and doing a lot with less (look at how well he did at Hawaii with barely any money to recruit with, yet he had 2 Heisman candidates during his 8 year tenure).

4. Brent Venables – The defensive coordinator of OU. Tech needs a lift on defense, even though this was a monumental year, but if we want to challenge for a national title, we need to up our defense. This guy is amazing. Sure, OU’s defense gives up more points than in years’ past, but they create so many turnovers, it’s unreal. He will not be with OU much longer and if Tech offers him a pretty penny, he might just come over to the dark side.

5. Will Muschamp – A southerner. Sure he comes from Georgia, but it doesn’t matter. This guy does not want to wait for Mack Brown to retire, because…well…look at JoePa or Bobby Bowden. Mack has a lot left in the tank with UT and there will be many head coaching offers for this man by next season, that we should offer him a job now if Leach leaves us.

6. Phil Fulmer – It would be hard to Tech to land a deal with Fulmer, but he is a great guy who knows how to recruit, and the players love this man. Sure, he had a bad year at Tennessee, but it wasn’t all his fault and his 152-52 coaching record tells the tale of his success.

Like I stated earlier, Leach is THE guy for Tech and I REALLY hope he stays, but if he leaves, I will probably have a mental breakdown, then pull for Tech to hire one of these six people.

6.

by techfan5730 on Dec 3, 2008 5:10 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Your list, outside of Peterson, sucks.

1. I’m not ready to jump on the Art Briles bandwagon yet. He’s the easy choice, but he’s also not the best available.
2. Peterson – Yes. Currently holds a UW offer.
3 June Jones – Worse than Briles
4. Venables – Benefits from talent + a head coach that knows how to beat TTU. I don’t want him as a head coach.
5. Muschamp – Good luck tearing him away from UT. I’m not sure if he’s “the one” even for UT.
6. Phil Fulmer – Seriously?

Briles will be a step down

Seriously I think Briles will be a step down. With due respect to what he has done at Houston, he failed to make it the number 1 team in its division and that inspite of having all the resources and inside track to recruiting at his disposal. His offenses are predictable and his defenses are not upto elite standards. I like the picks that kayakyakr has, plus a few:

1. Tommy Tuberville (if we thought Myers was an idiot, guess what Auburn created a situation where Tommy had to step down, Auburn got sick of being an elite team I guess)
2. I like Phil Fulmer (though from being an offensive machine, we will transform into a defensive jaggernaut)
3.Chris Petersen (his offensive philosophy will be a great progression to our current style, but can we get him out of Boise? Washington failed)
4. Muschamp is over hyped and frankly I was not impressed with Texas’s defense given the recruiting year they had over the last 3 years
5.Venable: Again I don’t know, Sooners haven’t exactly been defensive number uno over the past few years and that’s what Venable is supposed to be good at

But Phil Fulmer and Tuberville are going to be the low lying fruits that we can grab pretty quickly if captain leach departs but this I don’t think will happen and we will keep Leach in the end.
