Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance on Wednesday morning said the university will do what it can to retain football coach Mike Leach, but remained consistent with earlier statements from athletic director Gerald Myers about having to watch spending.
"My comment is, we want to keep Mike,’’ Hance said. "We like him. We’re a good fit for him, and he’s a good fit for us. We’re going to do what we can to keep him. Anytime somebody wants you, you’ve got to listen to them, I think. I don’t blame him for listening, but I don’t want him going.’’

Apparently, the UW interview with Leach was only “OK” according to the editor of Dawg Pound. The guy seems very well connected in Seattle (I’ve been following their site for a while now) and pretty much everything he say’s ends up happening. I could see Leach not being great on a job interview…probably pretty hard to get him to speak to the things you really want him to speak to.
Maybe they don’t want him as much as it would appear he wants them. Apparently, UW wants this job filled by Monday.

That seems to be the theme with Leach
He generates great buzz and he obviously is great fodder for sportswriters. Of course, then when he shows up to the interview carrying a tote bag from Trader Joe’s and wearing black socks with his Tivas, suddenly the old money in the room starts freaking out about whether they really want to entrust their team and their reputations to a goofy looking guy who just answered a question about his offense philosophy with a rambling story about Finland. I don’t know why, but it seems like many people have difficulty meshing their understanding of his coaching ability/accomplishments with what they see when they’re in a room with him.
