An unofficial Auburn representative has reached out to people close to Arkansas' Bobby Petrino and Texas Tech's Mike Leach to gauge their interest in succeeding Tommy Tuberville if the school decides to fire him, a source familiar with the contacts told The Birmingham News.

Those contacts took place before talks between Tuberville and Auburn officials about the coach's future resumed today.

Three sources close to the Leach camp said the Texas Tech coach would consider Auburn if the job were open.

No....say it isn't so....

I also read on ESPN that Myers has yet to contact Leach’s Agent…..

No Negotiations!?!?
Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers says the school is negotiating a contract extension with Mike Leach, amid reports that the Red Raiders coach has met with the University of Washington about the Huskies’ top job.

However, Leach’s agent told ESPN’s Joe Schad that no talks are currently under way.

“We have not received any information about Mike Leach’s contract from Texas Tech via phone, mail, e-mail or fax,” Leach’s agent, Gary O’Hagan, said Wednesday. “At no point has there been any offer. There have not been negotiations.”

Yes, this is all annoying

and I’m not talking about you, but rather the lack of urgency/speculation.

All this talk of Leach leaving is pissing me off. All the talking heads on ESPN says that Leach has done all he can at Texas Tech and the Big 12 is about Texas and OU. In my opinion, Coach Leach has just gotten started. I think I’m just going to stay off the web sites until this blows over.

I agree with WreckerRaider.

I am beggining to dislike the ESPN “drama-makers” also

I think

he’s as good as gone. This tells us all we need to know about what the Tech administration wants to do…"However, Leach’s agent told ESPN’s Joe Schad that no talks are currently under way. "We have not received any information about Mike Leach’s contract from Texas Tech via phone, mail, e-mail or fax," Leach’s agent, Gary O’Hagan, said Wednesday. "At no point has there been any offer. We are now four days removed from the end of the season and the phone hasn’t even rang for Leach. I’m embarrased.

I agree with Tech92

It sounds as if Auburn booted Tubs because they think they can land Leach. That, with the fact that Meyers and Hance are not coming through like they should, shows us how this thing is spiraling down the porceline convenience.

Auburn

Auburn is about a 2 hour drive from this Raider outpost. That would put me a very uncomfortable love/hate relationship with him as the Auburn coach usually makes a stop for boosters nearby.

If I could, I would show up wearing my Tech hat, sit in the back and scowl.

by Red Raider in South GA on Dec 3, 2008 5:13 PM CST   0 recs

As my mentioned on my earlier post, if Leach ends up leaving, all this falls on Gerald Myers. There are a lot of smoke screens out on the web right now, but I believe all Tech fans want to read about is “Tech has offered Mike Leach contract extension worth xxxxx amount for xxxx years.”

If Coach Leach wants to go somewhere else, so be it and we all can move on. I just want to see that our administration went above and beyond to keep him. I honestly thought we would see an announcement the Monday after the Baylor game. I was appalled that nothing had been mentioned but the standard BS lip service from the Chancellor and the AD.

Also, where the hell is the Lubbock media……if I were Don Williams, I would be scouring the entire Athletic Department right now to get the scoop. What else is going on in Lubbock tonight….hasn’t the Carol of Lights been lit already????

by WreckerRaider on Dec 3, 2008 5:21 PM CST   0 recs

Maybe

Just maybe, Meyers realizes Leach truly does want to leave Lubbock (and I really think Leach wanting to leave is the most likely truth in all this). Maybe they’ve had conversations to that effect and Hance/Meyers Wonder Twin duo isn’t interested in giving him an extension…or at the price it would take. Maybe Tech really doesn’t have the money and we’re just waiting for him to bail so we can go hire another relative unknown – as Leach was – and see what happens. Of course, if we have money to expand a stadium that may very well sit 1/4 empty in two seasons, then more power to us.

Maybe Meyers is working back channels to get interviews lined up with other guys (I hope he is, anyway…if he’s not looking for Plan Bs right this minute he’s the most incompetent AD in the history of ADs).

At the end of the day, I am starting to feel like the 8 at the bar whose date keeps eyeing the 10 over there in the corner – without even trying to be sly about the flirting. I’m tired of his extensive and out in the open interest in every other job in the country. I don’t want him here if he isn’t committed to Tech for at least the next few years. If we’re going to take a step back next year, I want to do it with the guy who is willing to move us forward in the years after that.

Forgot to mention

that Dan Patrick said on his show today that Leach was heading back up to Seattle for a final interview this week.

Well said

Tech92, I think most Tech fans feel that way, if you don’t want to be here, so be it. We want someone who will be with us in the long haul and not flirt every year with the next best job. Leach’s moves are becoming very Petrino-ish, and I think Tech fans are starting to lose their patience.

One thing I do is I keep reminding myself this is a business. There are no loyalties anymore (see Bobby Petrino, Nick Satan..I mean Saban). I only hope all of this is a way of Leach upping the ante and this will be the end of it.

by WreckerRaider on Dec 3, 2008 5:40 PM CST   0 recs

I wish it was just Leach playing poker

but I really deep down think he’ll jump at the first BCS school besides TTU that offers him a job.

by Tech92 on Dec 3, 2008 5:43 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

What’s interesting, is if you click on the article link and read the comments, it would appear that most of the fans don’t want Leach there.

Oh, and on ESPN SportsCenter they just mentioned that Auburn has reached out to Leach…nice.

by Tech92 on Dec 3, 2008 5:41 PM CST   0 recs

Of note: Leach’s agent is not talking to Tech. Tech officials are intending to contact Leach directly.

…I don’t think it will matter…

If he wants out,

Do we really want to keep him?

If someone wants out that bad it could be worse for us in the long run if he stays while continuing to try and leave.

is this maybe what Myers is thinking?

And then there's this today from

the Dallas Morning News:
Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said Wednesday he’s working on a contract offer to extend Tech coach Mike Leach to five years and give him a raise.

But Larry Anders, Tech’s Board of Regents vice chair from Plano, said Wednesday that regents would be advised about the parameters of a contract offer before one is proposed to Mike Leach and that hasn’t happened yet. Tech has a regents meeting scheduled for the end of next week, however.

“I would be surprised if we don’t have some discussion by next week,” Anders said. “Before the season began, his agent, acting on Coach Leach’s behalf, wanted to renegotiate that contract and we said we’d have some interest but some of the numbers he was proposing weren’t realistic. But we absolutely want to keep Mike.”

Re-read the second to the last sentence…you think that number went DOWN after the season we just had??

by Tech92 on Dec 3, 2008 6:14 PM CST   0 recs

I kind of thought there might be a little bit of a strained relationship. But I didn’t think it was an irreperable rift. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. Either way, nobody is winning many friends in this battle.

My guess is the contract from Meyers has been delivered to Leach. If he wanted to stay, he’ll be locked in sometime before Monday. Conversely, if he leaves, I think he’ll be announced as someone’s new coach by Monday as well. That made no sense, so I apologize. Fighting a cold.

by Tech92 on Dec 4, 2008 1:21 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

KAMC28 in Lubbock reported on the evening news at 6pm that...

A source with the Tech program said that a new contract from Texas Tech is on Leach’s desk…no comment from Chancelor Kent Hance or Gerald Myers.

Disgusting

If they let Leach go without effort and won’t/can’t pay Top 20 money for a Head Coach you can cancel my four season tickets. I have know interest in traveling from San Antonio if no commitment can be made by our administration. As a 77 Grad I am disappointed in both Meyers and Hance. I thought they had more commitment to Tech than they are showing. A season of sellouts and $3 million extra collected for the stadium expansion are because of Leach and a Top 10 team. I see us falling down the Rex Dockery spiral of second rate coaches again and it makes me sick.
