Leach withdraws from UWash consideration
I just heard on the latest Sportscenter that someone close to Leach said he withdrew his name from the Washington job. I hope this is true, and I hope the Captain isn't doing this so he can look at the Auburn job. Anyways it's still good that he's done with UW. Go Tech!
Go Tech! Go Tech! Go Tech! Go Tech! Go Tech! Go Tech! Go Tech! Go Tech! Go Tech! Go Tech!

I think Auburn is very unlikely
The way they’ve handled the firing of Tuberville will make it hard to bring in a guy who already has a rather good coaching gig in hand.
Listen to the wives of Auburn’s assistants on radio call-in shows about how they heard the news. Nothing like finding out about the termination of yourself and the entire staff while you’re sitting in the living room of a prospect…
I'm not convinced.
I certainly won’t suggest that the ESPN article is wrong, but Tuberville is getting his buyout, which is unusual for a coach who initiates the process.
My leading theory is that he was contacted through less dubious measures (e.g. their Board of Trustees approaching him off the record) that he’d get the buyout if he “resigned”, but that they were going to get rid of him if he didn’t.
There has to be more to the story than is being released to anybody right now. It’s certainly not a normal firing, but it really doesn’t feel like a routine resignation either. I imagine we’ll find out more in a few weeks.
I listened to the link you provided. That’s sad to hear those wive’s tell their stories. I would hope Leach and his wife would listen to how that went down before even thinking about Auburn as a destination. That administration is just garbage down there.
Yeah, the typical "coach's wife in the heat of the moment" filter applies, but
there is absolutely no way any university should ever allow a recruiter to find out about their termination while talking to a recruit, or find out while talking to the high school coach of a recruit, from the high school coach.
That kind of bush league organization will drive recruits away for years. At the very least, that’s one high school coach who won’t feel good about endorsing Auburn to his own players for a while.
Wow,
Auburn is pulling a Frank Solich.
After a 7-7 season in 2002, the Huskers’ worst record since 1961, Solich shook up his staff. He gave up offensive play-calling duties to newly hired offensive coordinator Barney Cotton and brought in Bo Pelini, the linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers, as defensive coordinator. 2003 began with Nebraska starting out 5-0, before suffering three key losses later in the year; 41-24 to Missouri, 31-7 to Texas and 38-9 to Kansas State. After the final game of the regular season, Solich was fired (after 9-3 record) a by new athletic director Steve Pederson, who justified the move by stating he would not “let Nebraska gravitate into mediocrity” and would not “surrender the Big 12 to Oklahoma and Texas”.
Parentheses added.
Some people call it a R.C. Slocum.
Slocum continually pressed Texas A&M to update the athletic facilities so that the university could compete with the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Oklahoma in football recruiting. The university officials finally listened to his pleas and began a large facility expansion project. Unfortunately, this was too late to save Slocum. He was fired in 2002 after a 6–6 season, which included a win over number-one-ranked Oklahoma.
Wes Welker can't be stopped.
offer
Someone told me earlier that tech has made and offerr of 3 mil, I’m not sure if that per year or added on to the remainer of his contract
D-ron
FWIW,
I’d much rather see Leach stay at Tech than go to Auburn. I like the guy and he’d be fun in the SEC, but I wouldn’t wish Auburn on anybody. Their fans are terrific but the administration is a complete mess.
Tuberville may have quit but....
There are several high profile board member aand alums have been after him since 2003? when they secretly tried to fly in Patrino to interview. So he just wanted to get past last year because he and most of his staff are now vested in the Ala. retirement fund. So thery has been enormous pressure for several years and he finally lost to Alabama. WReck’em Tech Keep Leach
right,
horrible stress. I wish this was already over. I can’t imagine how the kids are feeling down in lubbock about their coach right now.

HOLY COW!
There’s still a LONG way to go, but if this is true:
http://texastech.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=885423
Then today is officially an AWESOME day for Tech football. Leach withdraws from the UW search and according to that article Crabtree is coming back. Obviously that’s really tentative, and he can still change his mind or something, but… wow!
I’ll believe that when I see it. I’d be stunned. Happy, but stunned. BG at 12th man will not like hearing this :)
Oh, I’ll be surprised if he stays also, but I’ll enjoy the possibility for a little while at least. At least now I can believe it’s possible, whereas before (like many draft projections/next year Big12 projections) I was just taking it as a foregone conclusion that he’s gone.
(Maybe he just doesn’t want to risk being drafted by Detroit) ;)
Wish him luck with that.
They’ll be around next year as well. Fortunately, Millen won’t be there to draft that hot wide receiver pick in the top 10. again.
Next week
Unlike the past couple seasons, Leach gave the team off this week from all practices. May have to do with how many weeks between this week and January 2 or fact he had 7 assistants out recruiting while he visited parts of the country he was interested in seeing.

Interceptors rolled back into hanger. Still defcon 4.
i’ve got a… connection of sorts in this auburn thing. he’s been right so far, i’ll see what news out of auburn comes today.
I just don’t see Leach as a culture fit at Auburn. , the guys on their board are very much NOT on the Leach bandwagon. Not that it matters…
Aside…My dad went to grad school at AU and we lived there for two years. My first college football game live was Auburn vs. Miss State at Jordan-Hare. Way cool experience.
Anyone
know the status of Leach’s contract. I heard $2.5 mm plus incentives for 3 yrs. Sound right??
no official word on the details in a new contract. I expect that it will be between $2.65 million and $3 million with incentives (potentially enough buck in incentive to push him above the 3 million mark). It will be all over the web once someone actually gets to know what has been offered/demanded.
Crabtree
I think he really wants the heisman and next year without Grahm getting the attention should make it easier.

seriously?
the last reciever to win was like desmond howard or something. He’s the best and getting no serious play for the award this year and colt and sam are back next year too. I don’t think anyone would turn down 1st round money for a chance at the heisman.
However, the only way I see him winning it if he did turn down 1st round guaranteed money, is if he started returning kicks and stuff.
If he did stay, I don’t think they would try him at kick returns. That experiment ended in a hurry after one or two runbacks and he got hurt.
I think it would be foolish of him to come back, especially with the on-going ankle injury. I wouldn’t chance it if I was him.
That doesn’t mean I don’t want him, though. He’s a once-in-a-generation player, so the longer we could have him, the better. Plus, that would definitely boost Tech’s confidence next year after losing some of the key players to this year’s success.
He’s what – 20? His body still has some growing to do. He may be big and strong right now for the Big 12, but the NFL is a whole ’nother world. Remember Lloyd Hill?
Plus he seems like a kid with his head on straight. NFL cash may not be as big a lure for him as it is for some. OTOH, a cap on rookie signing bonuses kicks in next year.
Lloyd Hill had a bad attitude though….didn’t have good combine performance, bad numbers in college (mainly because Tech was a running offense at the time) and had a chip on shoulder because he was not drafted higher.
Crab will do well because he is coachable, Andre Johnson type size, and is a household name in College football. I would love for him to stay, but I can’t argue with the opportunity to be a top 5 pick. Look how it turned out for Matt Leinart!
Back to the UW withdrawal, this is awesome news. No announcement though on the deal from Tech administration…anyone got scoop on that?
Some blogger
on ESPN had an interesting mini-nugget regarding Leach backing out. Apparently, Leach did want the job, but Washington wanted to wait and he didn’t want to wait. So I’m sort of happy, sort of bitter if that’s true. I sure don’t want him to “settle” for Tech. But that may be what we get. Oh well. Maybe there’s really no right answer to all this. I’ll quit pretending to live with Pollyanna.
lloyd hill
he also played when he wanted too his last season. He would say he was injured and then the next week against someone he wanted to play against he would play then the next thing you knew he was injured again. He was good, but not crabtree good. I think 70% of our current recievers are better than Hill.
