Formal Offer Extended to Leach
Chancellor Kent Hance is confirming that Leach received the formal offer this afternoon. Hopefully, we'll have some closure before the end of the weekend. It looks to be much less than $3 mm per year, from what he hinted at.
I will speculate it's for roughly $12 mm over five years. That would be roughly $2.4mm per year. Seems pretty fair, especially if there are bonuses to push that past $3mm. We'll see how this all shakes out, but feel free to speculate!

Deal or No Deal
For Tech’s sake this had better be good. Things never sit well over a weekend to think about it.
I have a feeling I’m going to hear about this Sunday afternoon which is too long from now!!
What is the capacity at Floyd Casey Stadium? How can Art Briles get $1.8 million/yr without a problem there, yet at Tech, if we go above $2 million/yr, it practically breaks the bank!! Please explain how programs like Kansas and Baylor can afford large contracts, yet we can’t get to $3 million/yr. KANSAS……. not Texas, KANSAS!!!!!!!!!
Top 20
If the numbers work out like I am thinking (nothing to base that on, just a hunch), then it places Leach in the Top 15 on the salary scale. I honestly think that’s more than fair. I think OSU overpaid for Gundy today, but that’s their issue. And if there are incentives that can push him to and maybe beyond $3mm, I’d think it’s a pretty sweet deal. He’s not really worth more than that, to me.

I think Texas Tech either needs a new AD along with a new coach if Leach leaves.
I'll volunteer
Okay, since Auburn is having so much trouble finding a head coach, I will gladly volunteer to close my business and take the job at the bargain price of $1.5 million per year plus perks. I have no coaching experience, but I do love football and payed it through HS, I have visited Alabama at least twice, and I used to be a neighbor of Bart Starr in Green Bay, who was from the great state of Alabama and who lives there now. And I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Don't do that!
I live within commuting distance and would sacrifice my teaching job, not to mention the gas to keep Leach in Lubbock.

Columbus, GA local sports says about AU
Rodney Gardner, is interested. He is a former Auburn player, current recruiter and coach at UGA and would add to the number of African American head coaches.
Sports wonk also mentioned Leach’s contract extension and that Nutt is staying at Ole Miss.
Still sounds like Leach has a place if he wants it.

What if Leach leaves?
$2.4 million is a competitive salary. I think legit for a coach who has never won a big XI title or even a division title. But if Leach leaves what options are we left with?
1. Chris Petersen (have to fight Bulldog AD’s personal connections to get him)
2. Tommy Tuberville (Myers has to loosen his purse strings)
3. Phil Fulmer (gettable but will have to be more generous with compensation when he wins a division titles)
4. Steve Spurrier (the ole ball coach might just fit in our budget) : If he could make South Carolina competitive in the SEC, he will certainly be able to make Texas Tech elite
None of the above
Tuberville showed his lack of success with a spread offense. Spurrier is going nowhere. He’s got the best deal in college football. Expectations at USC are a joke for SEC standards and he just so happens to have a nice little membership at the Masters Golf Club with his salary.
Little Birdie
told someone I’m close to Leach will sign before Sunday…he just wanted a fair offer – and to be wanted by Tech officials. Seems basic enough.
Tech92 seems to have the lowdown…..I hope that’s true, so I don’t have to keep checking DTN every 10 minutes.
Jef:
1) Peterson is rumored to go to Miss State….I do like him, knows how to beat OU.
2) Tuberville will bring back the Spike offense…no to him.
3) Fulmer has had his days….needs to go into broadcast booth.
4) hell no he leaves the SEC
Check out my list:
1) I still have a man-crush for Art Briles
2) Brent Venerables
3) UH Head coach—has Tech ties
4) Sonny Dykes
Just for grins
I’ll play along with who would be a good fit at Tech…
1. Art Briles, though lately he seems to be getting a bad rap. Not sure why.
2. Dan Mullen – Off Coor/QBs coach at Univ of Florida
3. Todd Graham – HC at Tulsa
4. Gunter Brewer – Co-Off Coor/QBs at Okla State (strong Texas recruiter)
5. Trooper Taylor – Co-Off Coor/WRs at Okla State (Baylor alum, strong Texas recruiter)
TT4ever, I think a financial statement that might be a little more revealing
would be an income statement, or as they’re called in non-profit land (which the Tech Athletic Department is), a statement of changes in unrestricted net assets.
the point I was making was...
that nobody really knows what we can afford to offer Leach, but obviously I was wrong,
Tech92 has the statement of changes in unrestricted net assets all laid out on his desk there…witholding details like a scrooge
Tech92…how reliable is your source?
Isn’t it amazing that I get more from this site than the AJ or any of the local news stations? What the hell are those guys out in Lubbock covering? I went to www.lubbockonline.com and the feature story was about some guy who built a frigerator. Their blogs are outdated and always yesterday’s new….somewhat frustrating as all we want is the inside scoop which Lubbock media cannot even provide.
Thank goodness to all of you at DTN!!
Bummer.
I got one right before the economy tanked, so right now I’m just grateful for that. And for the fact that Leach (hopefully!) is going to stay in Lubbock!
