Texas Tech Sunday Morning Notes - Mike Leach Watch: Day 5

Double-T Nation News:

I've been meaning to mention this earlier, but good friend and Red Raider Steven Leija has some awesome photos from the Baylor game at his website, SidelinePros. Too many good ones to mention all of them, but there's a very cool picture of Crabtree gliding through the air, a very proud Emo, a beaming Sally Kipyego, a prayerful Ruffin McNeill, the moment right before Crabtree got hurt, Dixon sacking Griffin, etc. Lots of great moments, go check it out.

How many sets of knee-pads does Gary Danielson go through during a Florida game? Just curious.

This is not going to become high school-central, but I was following up on Texas Tech commit Jacob Karam and noticed in this story that after last night's win over Beaumont Central, Karam and his Friendswood teammates will be facing UT commit, Lake Travis' Garrett Gilbert. The game's in College Station at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.  If anyone goes and wants to give a scouting report, that would be awesome.

Mike Leach Watch:

I don't think I missed this yesterday, but according to ESPN, Mike Leach is to sign his contract within the next 48 hours. This story was posted yesterday evening at 6:27 p.m. ET, which means Leach should sign his contract sometime Monday.  That's assuming the story is accurate.

I was hoping that the LAJ would have some sort of update regarding the situation, but that hasn't happened yet and it's pretty close to 7:00 a.m. as I'm posting this.  I will update here if anything newsworthy happens.

Texas Tech Football:

The BCS Guru ha weighed in on who will be going to the BCs championship game, and its . . . Florida and Oklahoma. If you want to check out BCS Guru's projected BCS matchups, none of which include Texas Tech, then click on over.

FWST's Trae Thompson takes a look at the 2008 Heisman Trophy candidates and weighs in on who he thinks will win. Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree are both on his short list of 5.

CBS

While I completely understand that CBS has a contract with the SEC and likely forms good relationships with players due to the constant contact, is there not a way to keep Gary Danielson from cheering AGAINST other conferences, teams and players? I mean, NBC comes nowhere NEAR the level of homerism for Notre Dame that CBS does with Tim Tebow and anything Florida and/or SEC. It’s absurd!

And really, the loser is Danielson and CBS. Nobody outside of the SEC gives him or the network any credibility anymore.

I know the SEC is known for defense, but can we now also definitively say that they have still not discovered the joy of the forward pass? Those defenses are really good against the run…but which QB in the SEC is the one who can pass? I think it’s Stafford, right? Maybe Snead? I really think OU will steamroll Florida and we will steamroll Ole Miss…just out of spite.

Ole Miss scares me

based on how OU ran all over us and BAYLOR did last game, I am legitimately scared about the Rebs. I know if our D plays up to their potential we should have problems with them, but if they play like they did against baylor I expect them to run all over us and for it to be uncomfortable close. They also have a LOT of team speed, and McCluster is ridiculously fast.

sorry

that should say “have no problem” with them

The two styles are so different, it’s hard for me to get a good feel for how they’ll play out. I’ve always thought the SEC would have their hands full against one of our teams, but Florida isn’t the typical SEC team.

I feel like the Gooners owe us some kind of kickback. The only reason they’re up there is because we beat UT, laid down and let them run up the score against us, and came back against Baylor. If we do any of those three things differently, Texas goes to KC instead. Hell, now we gotta show ’em how to beat up on an SEC defense before they have to play Florida.

It sure stinks being kept out of the BCS bowls while all those lesser teams get in. Call me cocky, but I see five teams we could put a serious hurting on. And why don’t they just give Texas and Bama their bowl trophies right now? I’d much rather see those two play against each other (and I feel pretty sure Utah and Ohio State feel the same). Oh well, we can still show the SEC that our “3rd place” team can whip one of theirs.

Question

Let’s just say Leach stays on, but decides against signing his extension. Strange and unlikely, I’m sure…but what direction does Tech then take? Do we start looking for his replacement? Does Meyers try to raise more money in the coming months to up the ante? Does Tech decide to fire Leach and start with a clean slate?

I realize that’s all fairly preposterous, but given the fact he’s had the extension for about two days and nothing has been updated anywhere, it seems fair to say he is at least considering all options outside of signing. So my brain started to wander and that’s what it came up with.

Just like any major decision, I think Mike Leach is just making sure it’s the best decision. I feel this deal would have probably have gotten done if the deal did not come right before the weekend. He can’t stall any longer:

1) He has a Cotton Bowl to prepare for and needs to get the troops ready.
2) Any further delay will hurt recruitment and he has better get on the phone to talk to those who are now waffling because of his actions.
3) In our tough economic times, the court of public opinion will be all over him for asking for money as his offer is Top 15 coaches money.

I think the only thing administration should start thinking of is moving Gerald Myers to another role in the athletic department. I do like another member mentioning finding some young Theo Epstein-type figure to replace Myers.

There's

a lot more to this story than meets the eye. Clark was recently demoted to his Juco’s 2nd team.

Kyle Clark is solid as long as Leach stays.

I think that Kyle Clark is solid as long as Moore remains the line coach, in all honesty.

Is Kyle upset about contract too?

by TT4EVER on Dec 7, 2008 4:39 PM CST reply actions

Yes. Leach leaving throws a monkey wrench into everything that’s already been done.

sad but it’s to be expected. Look at what’s happening at Auburn.

If Leach signs, we go back to where we were.

Team is off until Thursday

Then preparation for bowl begins. Hopefully Leach’s contract situation will be taken care of well before then so everyone can focus.
