Texas Tech Sunday Morning Notes - Threaten the Bigs Edition

Sorry for the lack of updates of posting yesterday. I mentioned earlier in the week that I was going to be assisting with a benefit golf tournament for a friend of mine who was diagnosed with brain cancer. We were able to raise over $14,000 for my friend and his family to help pay for escalating medical bills.

My brother-in-law and I were in charge of measuring for the closest to the pin. The hole was a 167 par 3 with 5 m.p.h. wind at your back. If there's one thing that I noticed is that 95% of all golfers absolutely stink. We measured a grand total of 3 times the entire day and the winning shot was 81.75", which didn't seem all that close to me, especially considering that there were 80 golfers on the course.

The point of this story, if you are ever intimidated about playing golf in a tournament, don't be. Most guys are as bad as you and most of them are worse. Don't be afraid to hack away.

Items I'm working on: Will Pat Knight be a successful head coach for Texas Tech? Why is one coach considered a sorry S.O.B. for resigning and coaching the way that he did, while other coaches who had to quit their team for drinking related issues and numerous NCAA violations gets a free pass, while the morality of a coach who has done coached without violation is now called into question for being an asshole who threw a chair?

I hope to have a post on both of these topics relatively soon.

Texas Tech Basketball:

I've got the basketball game Tivo'ed and so I have to run some errands today, but I'll have a review of yesterday's game up sometime today. Here's the official boxscore and it appears that the biggest issue was poor shooting, especially from beyond the 3-point line (22.2% for the game). Too many threes and not enough inside as Rizvic, Cook and Suljagic, combined, had 7 points 7 rebounds in 34 minutes. Not the kind of production you need from your frontcourt.

LAJ's Jeff Walker has his game story, noting that Nebraska center Maric simply dominated the Red Raiders. Interestingly, Knight did put the big men on notice:

Wow. I'm actually standing up and applauding in my office at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. This needed to be said for quite some time as the Texas Tech frontcourt, for the past two years has been absolutely dismal.

Knight did give some praise to Zeno, who struggled the last game:

The DMN pulled an old Kevin Sherrington article on Pat Knight when he was the coach of the Wisconsin Blast. If you ever wanted to know who Pat Knight was a person, this is a pretty good place to start.

Texas Tech Football:

Texas Tech has had another player sign a letter of intent when Coronado quarterback Austin Zouzalik was offered a scholarship by the Red Raiders. Zouzalik (6-1/175) was the quarterback for a Coronado team that went 11-2 and Zouzalik passed for 2,908 yards (25 touchdowns) and rushed for 971 yards (15 touchdowns). Williams notes in the article that Zouzalik ran a 4.38 40-yard dash, and who else has visions of Wes Welker dancing in their head? Of course I realize that Zouzalik isn't in the same situation as Welker and had offers from Iowa State, Rice, Arizona and Baylor. Of course Zouzalik isn't even given a star rating by Scout or Rivals, which makes me scratch my head and think how can a kid who is as productive on the field and seemingly as athletically gifted as Zouzalik not even get so much as a rating by either recruiting service? Oh, well.
