Texas Tech Tuesday Morning Notes - A Little Bit of Football Edition

Double-T Nation News:

In no particular order, DTN's Top Five:

  1. Jimmy Kimmel is *#@$ing Ben Affleck (Language Warning).
  2. For those of you curious about the Lady Raiders, Hyatt checks in.
  3. Corn Nation has the Big 12 Baseball Week in Review.
  4. Spread Offense talks with future Texas Tech opponent Tulsa . . . er, wait, we hate Tulsa.
  5. Crimson and Cream Machine discusses who will be dancing and who's on the bubble for the NCAA tournament (Texas Tech is on the bubble) and Sports Nation asks whether Texas Tech can dance.

Texas Tech Football:

ESPN's Tim Griffin is starting to preview Big 12 Football and he starts with key positional battles, coaching changes and other items to consider for spring practices. Griffin rightly notes that the improvement of the defense will determine the fate of the Red Raiders. Griffin has also ranked the Big 12 teams heading into spring practice, with Texas Tech at 4th, which seems about right.

Texas Tech Basketball:

Nothing out there about Texas Tech this morning, but you can read about how desperate the Aggies are here and here. I'm expecting TAMU to come out swinging on Wednesday, they'll be playing for their NCAA tournament lives.

Texas Tech Baseball:

How about that? I'm pretty proud of my Red Raiders for splitting the UTSA tournament, beating the home team UTSA 16-6 yesterday (boxscore). Texas Tech scored 10 runs, yes that's right, 10 runs in the 1st inning. First baseman Doug Thennis started the day with a 1st pitch home run and finished the day 2-5 with 2 RBI. Right fielder Roger Kieschnick (2-5), second baseman Joey Kentworth (2-4) and catcher Monk Kreder each had 3 RBI for the day.

Probably the best news of the day, Cory Large pitched 5 innings of perfect ball, falling off a little in the 6th inning, finishing the day with 6 innings pitched, giving up 3 runs, striking out 4 and walking none.

Up Next: Texas Tech v. New Mexico, Wednesday, February 27, 2008 @ 4:00 p.m. Russ Fornea (TT) (0-0) v. Jacob Norton (NM) (0-0).

Not bad
The start to the season was tough, given the NIU situation and last minute schedule change. But they look to have a nice foundation after the opening tourney.

Kieschnick will have another huge year, then we need to wish him well on his pro career. He's in the top 50 list of prospects by almost every national baseball publication I can think of. Potential first round draft choice! Though in baseball the draft is a HUGE crap shoot. About 2/3 of the first round picks never make noise in the bigs - if they reach the bigs.
