Texas Tech Thursday Morning Notes - No NCAA Bracket Edition

Double-T Nation News:

I know that I haven't so much as mentioned the NCAA Tournament, in part because I just haven't had the energy to talk about the Tournament without Texas Tech in the mix. Not only that, I very much doubt that you guys care about who I think will win and to continue my defiance, I will not be filling out a bracket. I'm sure that makes me un-American, but we're going to be able to talk about spring practice in less than a week.

In no particular order, DTN's Top Four:

  1. Here's how to watch the NCAA Tournament on your computer while you're working.
  2. Here are the games you local affiliate will carry today.
  3. Sportsline's Dennis Dodds with a pre-spring Top 25 and Texas Tech checks in at 12.
  4. Bring On The Cats is all growns up, make sure and check out BOTC's tribute to Texas Tech.

Texas Tech Basketball:

South Plains defeated Georgia Perimeter, 88-83, and Texas Tech signee, David Okorie, had a very efficient game. How about 7-11 from the field, including 1-2 from beyond the 3-point line, for 18 points. I'm interested, very interested.

Texas Tech Baseball:

Don't forget that the next 10 games are in Lubbock, starting with this series against the Longhorns. Go watch some good baseball this week.

Date Texas Tech Texas Result
Thursday 03/20/08 @ 6:05 p.m. Nate Karns (1-2, 9.72) Austin Wood (2-1, 3.18) Boxscore
Friday 03/21/08 @ 6:05 p.m. AJ Ramos (1-2, 5.73) Kenn Kasparek (1-1, 4.24) Boxscore
Saturday 03/22/08 @ 12:00 p.m. Chad Bettis (3-0, 3.24) TBA Boxscore

LAJ's George Watson has his preview of the Texas series and talks with pitching coach Dan Spencer about the issues that his 1 and 2 starters are currently having. Watson notes that Spencer is trying to balance between winning now and building the program:

"As a coach, you want to make a quick reaction and make a good decision and pick something," Spencer said. "I think with the bodies we have and the people we have, the personnel, it just becomes an issue where we've got to do something. We're in it for the long haul here and trying not to do something today that will hurt us down the road, but on the other hand we're in the business of winning games."

Right now, Spencer doesn't think there are many options in replacing Ramos or Karns:

"I thought about (James) Leverton, but he's our left-handed guy at the end of the game," Spencer said. "I thought about (closer Zach) Stewart, but fine. What do you do the other four days of the week? In a perfect world, you would have another starter you really like that you can plug in and go, but I'm not sure we have that guy in place. I've thought about it but I haven't come up with a good answer yet."

It will be interesting to see how Ramos and Karns respond after Spencer has publicly come out (and rightfully so) talk about their jobs not being safe.
