Texas Tech Tuesday Morning Notes - They Can't All Fall In Edition

Double-T Nation News:

For those of you who haven't figured it out, it's going to get quite a bit more quiet around here after the completion of spring practice. If there's anything that you'd like me to research or write about, then drop me a line. As of right now, my plate consists of the following: individual basketball reviews, a much closer look at the the basketball team's performance, a season in review (see here or here), football community projections (see here and here), and whatever else I can think of to make DTN chug along until August.

In no particular order, DTN's Top Eight:

  1. DT! talks with Chris Snead.
  2. Uni Watch previews MLB's new uniforms.
  3. What If Sports. What a cool concept. Another good waste of time (hat-tip Da Wiz).
  4. Mavs related: How to properly use Jason Kidd. I agree whole-heartedly.
  5. Watch all South Park episodes for free. This should make Hogs Haven happy.
  6. The Dagger takes a look back at last week's tournament action.
  7. Corn Nation's weekly Big 12 Baseball Review.
  8. Canouflage. Genius.

Texas Tech Football:

Fox 34 has a look back at last spring's question marks and it makes me a little sad to see Shannon Woods taking a handoff from Graham Harrell.

Texas Tech Baseball:

Date Texas Tech UC Riverside Result
Monday 03/24/08 @ 6:05 p.m. 5 (W: Zach Stewart, 1-0) 4 (L: Ryan Platt, 0-1) Boxscore
Tuesday 03/25/08 @ 2:00 p.m. Russ Fornea (2-2, 5.51) Paul Applebee (0-3, 5.82) Boxscore

I'll take it. A wild pitch from UC Riverside reliever Ryan Platt allowed Tanner Rindels to score from third, giving the Red Raiders a 5-4 victory. Starting pitcher Cory Large pitched 5.0 innings, giving up 4 hits, 3 runs, walking only 2 and striking out 1. The bullpen pitched well too, giving up only 2 hits, 1 run, walking none and striking out 3 in 3 innings of work. Brian Cloud pitched 2.0 of those innings with James Leverton and Zach Stewart each getting 1.0 inning each. Don't look now, but the Texas Tech bullpen is really starting to pitch well and that's a great sign.

Roger Kieschnick hit his 10th home run of the year, going 2-4, and had 2 RBI. As Hyatt mentioned yesterday, Kieschnick doesn't have as much help around him as in previous years as the rest of the team only managed 5 other hits. In front of Kieschnick, Kenworthy and Seefeld each had an RBI.

LAJ's George Watson recaps last night's win, and make sure and click over as there's a pretty cool picture of Rindels diving into home for the winning run. Here's Kieschnick:

"That's baseball," said Kieschnick, who drove in his team-leading 31st and 32nd runs of the season with the homer, an opposite-field shot to left. "They can't all fall in and they can't all get caught. You just have to go out there and battle every day and not get your head down. I think I had good swings all this past weekend but just missed the ball by a quarter of an inch."

Here's starter Cory Large:

"I was just really trying to throw strikes. I'm not worried about what we're going to do this weekend," Large said. "We need to try and take these next two games and get some wins so we can start rolling. I was really trying to throw strikes because we had way too many walks this weekend. I just tried to pound the zone and keep it away from the hitters with the wind blowing the way it was, and keep the ball down."

How about a discussion on what it would take to break TTU from a marginal top 25 team to a team that could compete for the top 10 yearly? That's a good discussion every year.

I hear you and I'm working on something
for this topic. Perhaps a little bit of a different spin, but I've really given this some thought.
Go Raiders . . .
