Texas Tech Wednesday Morning Notes - He's Family Edition

Raider Power has a free article this morning, looking at converted safety, LA Reed, and his transition to the defense. Here's Reed:

"It's been a good switch so far. I'm just got to keep learning the defense. All the back peddling and stuff like that, I'm getting that down pretty good. And all it is now is just keep learning the defense, just keep making plays out here. I feel good."

His experience running routes and understanding of what receivers do to try to get open should give him an extra advantage when trying to cover them.

"That helps a lot too, when I don't know exactly what the defense is, you know, I can kind of read the receivers and see what they're doing. But the main thing is just getting comfortable with the defense and learning that, and then once you know that and then you know what the receivers are going to do, then that's when you can be unstoppable."

Seems like Reed is really moving up the depth chart, something that I thought that he would have a tough time breaking. It's going to be interesting to see how this position plays out.

DT's Adam Coleman featured junior defensive end McKinner Dixon yesterday and focuses on junior receiver Todd Walker's return from missing all of 2007. Up first, defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill on Dixon:

"McKinner is very intense, very talented, can run and can make and finish plays,' he said. "He has the total package. He's getting back in the groove. He's going to be really a key element in our success that we expect to have on defense."

"He came back," he said. "His mental approach to the game is much better. He's mature. He's had a real solid spring. It's always good when you got one player that commits to you early. Stay with your commitment, stay with his commitment and come back down and come back to us. I'm glad to have McKinner back in the fold. He's family."

Insider receivers coach Lincoln Riley on Walker:

"He really came out of the gate strong," Tech inside receivers coach Lincoln Riley said of Todd Walker. "The thing he's done, he's been really consistent for us. He's been the guy that made the consistent tough catch. He's a really smart guy, so he understands. Maybe (he) does some of the more complex things on routes that other guys can't do. The other thing, he's got experience. He played in the Insight Bowl. He's bringing a lot to the table right now."

Yesterday, Fox34 focused on Jamar Wall, now, the focus is on the opposite corner and talks with cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell

Damn. The Red Raiders got down early, rallied, but ultimately lost to the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, 9-8. Lorenzo Dougls struggled on the mound, yeilding 5 hits, 7 runs, all earned, 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in only 1.2 innings (5 of these runs were off of a grand slam). Sam Janca pitched well in relief, giving up 1 hit, 1 walk and striking out 3 in 3.0 innings. The rest of the bullpen was hit-or-miss. Robert Kilcrease and James Leverton pitched scorless innings for the Red Raiders, while Owen Brolsma and Zach Stewart each yeilded a run, although Brolsma could not record an out.

Willie Rueda had 4 hits in 6 at bats along with 6 RBI and the offense did record 14 hits for the night. Chris Richburg went 3-5, while Taylor Ashby went 2-3 with 2 RBI and Crhsi Hall wen 1-3, also with 2 RBI.

LAJ's George Watson recaps last night's loss and had this sobering note:

It is Tech's fifth straight loss, eighth in its last nine games and drops the Red Raiders to 17-20 overall, the first time the program has been three games under .500 since losing four of its first five games to start the 1994 season.
