Texas Tech Friday Morning Notes -

Double-T Nation News:

For the rest of the spring/summer, I'm going to do plenty of content, but I'm also going a little off-script occassionally, so just bear with me. Being entertaining doesn't come naturally to me. Besides, it's a long offseason and I realize that my job is to make this blog mildly entertaining so that you guys keep coming back. I realize too that we can't continually keep talking about football until August. As much as I'd love to do so, I just can't do it. I don't have that much information. In fact, if I broke down every player every day until football season, I'd still have to fill 20 or so days until the season actually starts.

You've probably noticed that I've stopped "DTN's Top ____", but it is out of pure laziness. "DTN's Top ____" will return, but probably on a much less frequent basis until football heats back up or until I actually have 10 things to link.

I've also decided to pick up a couple of new sports that I want to follow casually and I'm going to be looking at you for guidance. For example, I want to start following soccer or football, but I need a team. I've got no affiliation. I'm a free agent. I'm not ready to get into this yet, but this is where I need you guys to help me figure out who is going to be my team.

I'll also be introducing, this morning in fact, "Music I Like, But Probably Shouldn't Admit In Public". This is my attempt to crack open the door into the wonderful world of Seth C. So without further ado . . .

Music I Like, But Probably Shouldn't Admit In Public:

First of all, I pretty much hate all mainstream country music from 1985 forward (except for Dwight Yokum, who I think is greatness). Just can't stand it. I know, that probably makes me less Texan. However, I could listen to this song 100 times and never get tired of it. Don't ask me why, but I do. And the Bellamy Brothers aren't by any means embarassing, but they aren't rocking the charts either. Anyway, I hadn't thought of this song until earlier this week I was having dinner with my old lady and it came on inside the restaurant. I found myself tapping my toes and bobbing my head.

Bellamy Brothers with Let Your Love Flow:

Texas Tech Football:

LAJ's Don Williams catches up with new College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Dave Parks. It's nice to hear about how Parks believes it's all about team. Although I think Leach's teams are more team-oriented now than they ever have been, perhaps it would be a good idea to have a guy like Dave Parks talk about success and team and culture:

"It's because of what I learned in high school,'' he said. "It's a compliment to high school coaching. ... See, I played ball at Abilene, and I only knew one thing, and that was team. Abilene had won state championships, and that whole culture was just wrapped around that part of it. With Coach Moser and his staff, it wasn't that anybody was that much different than anybody else. You all have a job to do, and to win everybody's got to do their job.''

If you haven't seen it already, scroll down or go here for video of "The Catch" against Texas A&M in 1963.

Hat-tip to DTN reader djollie111, for the Texas Tech Team Report from Yahoo! Sports, via Red RaiderSports. Lots of notes and tidbits, but no breaking news.

Fox34 and Chris Level takes on the safeties and gives them A, but the rational is that there are a ton of options without anyone stepping up, which doesn't make too much sense because that was the problem with the cornerbacks, no one had stepped up and they guy they thought would step up, LaRon Moore, was injured for most of the spring. Oh, well. Also, listen closely because I think it's the Sanford and Sons theme song playing in the background.

Texas Tech Baseball:

DMN's Brian Davis says that the Red Raiders will be in more than capable hands with Dan Spencer and thinks that the succession plan will be a smooth transition. Here's Davis and Spencer:

What should energize Tech fans is that Spencer's wheels are already turning about what changes need to be made. He was on a recruiting trip in Denver on Tuesday, the day Hays made the announcement.

Spencer, 42, can essentially eat his own cooking when he takes over in 2010. By using the next year to recruit as an assistant, Spencer can build his own team from the ground up. Talk about an incredible setup.

"We've got to get better everywhere," Spencer said. "We need more left-handed arms, more left-handed bats. We are very one-dimensional offensively as far as being right-handed. We need to get faster, because speed hurts defensively, especially in a big park like ours.

"We have to get better players and get younger."

Fox34 also has an update that I missed earlier in the week on AJ Ramos, who appears to be doing well since season ending surgery. Send good mojo his way.

soccer
It's a wide, wide world. One thing i've found: if you live in an area without decent competitive soccer, you can root for anyone from anywhere. Anyone in the US has an excuse to be a fan of milan or manchester united (though they may be the only team in the world who would be angry to have you. it's not you, it's just that they tend to be an angry bunch).

English fans in general are a ill reputed bunch. reading through this wiki article on the "friendly rivalry" between liverpool f.c. and everton f.c. (whose home grounds are separated by less than a mile and a strip of parkland) refers to two "disasters" of people being injured or killed from the crush of insane fans and the actions of the liverpool hooligans. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merseyside_derby)

The best thing you can do to getting into international soccer is find you a few stations that carry international matches. The US teams are starting to build a bit of momentum, but it may never be as fervent here as american football is.

If you have a friend into international soccer, that helps too.

Liverpool Hooligan
Man U fans are stuck up snobs anyways.

Easy on the actions of Liverpool Hooligans being the cause of some of those especially Hillsborough.  There were multiple reasons for them being crushed.  The fence setup.  Police opening up all the gates at once which they never do.  There is a lot more to that than just Hooligans crushing people.  If you want Hooligans look more towards the old West Ham IFC and Millwall.  There are some movies out to.

I went to a game in England in 2002 and it was a blast and no stuck up Englishmen was there not wanting me there.  Two boys behind me explained to me about their team (Reading) and the players on each side.  They taught us the chants for their squad.

If you want an English team.  Don't go the Manchester United route.  Everybody and their dog says they like Man U (Thank Beckham for this).  Find your own link to a team.  I like Liverpool because I watched Michael Owen play in a World Cup and was in awe of a small guy playing so well and found out who he played for and starting following them.

If you want an English team with American flair try no further than Fulham which has 5 Americans - McBride, Bocanegra, Dempsey, Keller, Johnson.

If you want International.  The Olympics start and this is pretty much like the Men's U-23 world championship.  US is taking a strong team, but in a tough group.

If you want MLS - Texas actually has two decent teams.  I go with FC Dallas, but Houston has a nice team with some skins on the wall.  They play rough like the Pistons back in the 80's.  Personally I hate watching Houston except for DeRosario.

In the end please for the love of all things right and fair don't root for the LA Galaxy with Beckham and Donovan.  If you have any other questions about soccer just ask me.

awesome
i figured there'd be a soccer fan around. The reference to the liverpool hooligans was in relation to the "disaster" in italy. They had nothing, really, to do with the crush in england.

And don't blame beckham for all of manchester's american bandwagon... their hooligans were featured in a few movies of the early 2000's. I think they were on Eurotrip?

Hells yeah
I was thinking English Premiere League, this is obviously going to take quite a bit of work on my part. Isn't there some deal that if you aren't good enough then you drop down to the lower league? I don't want one of those teams constantly dropping down. Again, this is going to take some pretty serious research on my part.

Dwight/other sports
I don't know if I can back you on the Bellamy Bros. thing, but I've got my fair share of music I shouldn't tell people about, so I'll let that one slide.  Dwight, however, is a different story.  I have grabbed up everything he has done while shunning mainstream country for years.  The guy's an artist.

On the subject of picking a new casual sport to follow, you should give UFC a shot.  Watch a few episodes of the Ultimate Fighter, catch some of the free UFC spike fights, and then catch the next PPV UFC fight in a few weeks(May 24?25?).  Do it college football-style at a bar or at home with buddies.  It gets addicting.  Check out some of Anderson Silva's past fights, just to give you a name of someone who's fun to watch break people down....the guy's a technician with powerful strikes.  A beast.  Should help fill the gap between now and Aug..100 days, geez.  Can't wait, and great site.

I hadn't even thought of UFC
but I'll give it a shot. I assume they fight year round? And do people have a favorite fighter (i.e. Kimbo Slice) or do they watch it as a sport? I'll have to watch for Silva.

I worded that poorly
is it like NASCAR where people are loyal to one driver, or like boxing where people tend to generally follow the sport?

Break way from "Ball" Sports
Love collage football but my main interest is MOTO GP. This is the top level of Motorcycle Road Racing. Million $ motorcycles and the best riders in the world. Three Americans compete at this level including one Texan, Colin Edwards. If your thinking this is a billboard parade like NASCAR, it ain't. NASCAR is a bunch of pink panty girly men compared to MOTO GP; where they turn both right and left, race in the rains, and when you make a mistake it hurts badly.

This happened yesterday in China.

Like Hemingway said, Its not Sport unless it can kill you, everything else is a game.

I realize this ain't everyone's cup of tea I just like talking it up when I can.

I understand the mainstream country music thing but surely there is some Joe Ely in your TT heart.

Okay,
that was pretty bad ass, and for those who don't want to click over, the video is below.

Where do I watch something like this? Is there a blog so I can catch up and edumacate myself?

Honestly, it's been a really long time since I've listened to Joe Ely, and now that I think about it, probably 12 years. He's not in my regular rotation. But you do give me a pretty good idea in that perhaps when we bump up to SBN 2.0, we can have an open thread where you post the tunes you enjoy or an open thread where you post the tunes you're embarrassed you like.

Moto gp stuff
I use the English, Australian, Irish, and New Zealand, media sites to get my main stream media news. Moto GP is huge in Europe so they have lots of regular coverage.

These are the Blogs that I reference.

 http://www.rideontwo.com/

http://www.motogpblog.com/

There will be a MOTO GP at Indy this year so they have Colin Edwards doing this.

http://www.redbullindianapolisgp.com/news/10965/Tornado_Warning__Grand_Prix_Of_Portugal

Colin is call the Texas Tornado. He won two World Super Bike titles (one step down from Moto GP) before moving to the GP class. He has yet to win a race in GP but has several top three finishes. (I seen to be drawn to teams and people like this; Colin, The Mavericks, Texas Tech., at least Colin has two WSBK Titles)

This is the official MOTO GP site.

http://www.motogp.com/en/news

This is the Tech 3 team site.
It is a French Team so this site is a little strange

http://www.teamtech3.fr/

An easy way to get a feel for the sport is to rent the DVDs  "Faster" and "The Doctor, the Tornado, and the Kentucky Kid."

"Carmen must have been the devils daughter, at least he taught her how to ware her clothes, and the boys all followed her to slaughter where they fell like a row of dominos."

Colin got the Pole position
The race will be televised on SPEED at 3:00 pm.
The weather calls for rain, but they will race unless it is a down pour.
Colin runs Michelin tires who has been having trouble with their rain tire this year.
Lorenzo (the guy in the crash) was put on his bike and qualified 4th with broken bones in his feet. When I say put on his bike that was literally picked up and put on his bike, when he came into the pit they would catch him so that he would not fall over.
I doubt that he can be competitive but with a wet track you never know who will get take out. Tuff Guy.

Alternatives to ball sports
You have your engine sports: Moto GP, any of the "X" brand of motorcycle races, supercars (not much coverage in the US), or my favorite, Rallysport (again not much coverage).

Then you have your snow sports. I love skier cross, it can be mean (and cbs was really good about showing each of the major ski events this winter).

Also you've got my personal favorite, surfing. Something beautiful about what those guys can do on the board in the wave that I wish I could do. Sadly it's almost never on network television.

Sports I'd watch:

  1. Football
  2. Hockey
  3. Surfing
  4. Rallysport racing
  5. Basketball (college or Texas NBA teams)
  6. Tennis (go figure, i enjoy watching tennis)
  7. Supercar racing (f-1, p-1, stuff where the driver has to do more than turn left)
  8. "X" sports (ski/snowboard/dirtbike racing)
.
.
.
n-1th) Golf
nth) Baseball (MLB)
