Texas Tech: Best in Texas?
Jake Shaw's Texas Football blog, 6/18/08 edition
DCTF writer, Jake Shaw, backs up the magazines prediction that Texas Tech is the best in Texas.
A compilation of 15 rankings services (not counting our own) has Tech ranked 14th in the nation. Like our preseason poll, Sports Illustrated rated the Red Raiders 8th in the nation. The lowest the Red Raiders appear is No. 21, by the Sporting News.
Count me and fellow DCTF staff among those who believe Tech will live up to these expectations. We didn't pick Tech this high to stir things up. The Red Raiders have the best team in place of all teams in Texas to make a dash for the BCS.

Sounds right
I think 14, on average, is a fair starting point for Tech this year. I think the #8 SI gave us was too high, but that’s me being a fan of the underdog role for Tech. We almost always seem to perform at a higher level when people say we can’t do this or that. Seems the minute we get a little love, we tank.
But with who we have in the fold, and our history of not performing as well when the expectations are high, 14 sounds very reasonable. Gives us room to improve pretty easily into the BCS picture, but not so high that if we lose a tight game to a good team we drop way down. Seems that top 10 teams take a huge ratings tumble when they lose, but the middle of the pack teams (#12-18 or so) aren’t hurt as bad by a loss.
Tall order.
This team needs to show me they can beat UT before I’ll ever presume before the season starts that we’re better. As far as I’m concerned, until we beat the Longhorns, we’re #2.
in other words
The Red Raiders have the best team in place of all teams in Texas to make a dash for the BCS.
They could have just said, “Tech returns more starters than any other team in Texas”.
Until Tech shows they have a real defense, one that can actually stop the run, they don’t deserve to be top 15. JMO.
