Three Teams That Will Disappoint Their Fans in 2008

Chase Dunagan a contributor for The Bleacher Report is not buying into the Texas Tech hype.

Who knows maybe he’s right, but like the chance to prove skeptics wrong. Tech seams to perform better as an underdog anyway, so go ahead doubt Tech some more.

Texas Tech

Oh no. That’s what you’re all thinking. “He did NOT just go there.” I did.

Texas Tech is BY FAR the most trendy pick of the off-season.  A bunch of returning starters on offense, and a good defense that has only gotten better with the additions of JUCO transfers and a year of maturity.  Well I say hogwash!

If you’re a fan of the Big 12, you know that year after year Texas Tech is touted as “the team that will surprise this season!”  But year after year Tech under performs and loses to teams far inferior to them.

In 2004, the Red Raiders had a solid year where they only lost to the big three, Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M.  Oh yeah, they lost to New Mexico, a team that lost to anyone with a pulse in 2004.

In 2005, Tech had an amazing year.  They beat OU, and went to the Cotton Bowl.  But a loss to Oklahoma State late in the season cost them a chance to play in a BCS bowl.  Oklahoma State’s only conference win that season was against Tech.

In 2006, Tech scored a total of nine points in losses to TCU and Colorado. Colorado was 2-10 that year.

And last year, Texas Tech somehow managed to lose to Colorado (6-7) at home.  And that defense that was "good" last year, gave up a total of 202 points in the last six games of their season, including 59 points from an average Texas offense.

The only team not to score at least 31 points in their last six games?  Baylor, who scored 7. Even if that defense got better, that’s like saying Shaquille O’Neal got better at free throws. So what?

This year people will be ready for Crabtree, and this year Tech will perform like they always do…. Disappointingly.

My Prediction:  Texas Tech will be good, real good.  But not good enough, and not BCS caliber.  I see them losing to Oklahoma, Texas, and possibly A&M (the Aggies have to win sometime).  Tech goes to the Holiday Bowl.

"But year after year Tech under performs and loses to teams far inferior to them."

I have to disagree with their point on under performing. A&M has been the over hyped (under performs) team the past several years with Tech being the underdog (over performs). Everyone expected Tech to have a 6-6 season last year and look what happend. I can’t remember a year where they really disappointed other than the year Tech made it to the Cotton Bowl. Even then that was pretty good for making it through the season when the star receiver (Hicks) was out bascially the entire year for grade issues. They do typically lose to a team they shouldn’t but it’s always offset by beating a team they shouldn’t. Last year being CU and OU. This really the first year that I’ve ever seen will talent on both sides of the ball with debth to back up any issues. Yes, even if Crabtree is out for some odd reason it won’t destroy the season. The main position at risk is Harrell only because Potts seems to be very inconsistent unless Leach will give him plays to throw the ball 50yrds downfield (he lacks touch).

Maybe I’m wrong?

Good Comments

I have to agree. How has Tech underperformed in the past when we haven’t had any preseason hype or expectations? I think we are only getting attention now because we did exceed expectations in the past without the talent we are fielding this year. If I had to list Big XII teams that have underachieved in the past, aTm and Nebraska would come to mind, but not Tech. The only thing Tech is guilty of is inconsistency, not underperformance.

BS
...year after year Texas Tech is touted as "the team that will surprise this season!"

The truth is year after year Texas Tech is picked to finish 4th or 5th in the South, just slightly better than Baylor.

It’s us against the world, just like it’s always been.

Huh?

Uhm, I’m a fan of the Big-12 and I don’t remember hearing this. Our AP preseason ranking the last six years:

UNRANKED 2007
25th 2006
21st 2005
UNRANKED 2004
URANKED 2003
UNRANKED 2002

USA Today:

URANKED 2007
25th 2006
21st 2005
UNRANKED 2004
UNRANKED 2003
UNRANKED 2002

Touted as what by whom, exactly?

Go register. Or else.

Typical

“A bunch of returning starters on offense, and a good defense that has only gotten better with the additions of JUCO transfers and a year of maturity.”

Those are the last facts in this article. The national media views our team after coming off wins against Oklahoma and then Virgina in the Gator bowl as a team that will do great things this year. Returning 10 of the 11 starters on offense, including Heisman hopefuls Harrell and Crabtree, and adding some impressive JUCO defensive players makes Tech look like a team to beat in 08.

Here is what I hear from mostly Texas and A&M fans and others who dont like Tech for whatever reason. Tech cant be good cuz they suck.

Typical for the better

We are better off with everyone underestimating us. On the other hand until we win the big game and DO NOT LOSE the game we should win (Colorado etc) we should not be picked better than 3rd. We can do it if the Defense is as good as we all think it might be.

TECH....ALWAYS OVERRATED??????

Are you sure its college football you’re talking about? What sport has this guy been watching? Saying Tech is always overrated is like saying aTm is always underrated.

But seriously, I try not to talk too much about pre-season hype or lack thereof for exactly this reason….because its nothing but talk. Some teams return everyone, have heisman hopefuls and still underachieve. Others scrape up a team from the bottom of the barrel and greatly exceed expectations. Tech has been somewhere in between the past few years. Having a great team “on paper” means nothing if you don’t go out and execute.
