Tech Helping to Raise the Bar in the Big XII

Interesting article on relative conference strength from SI.com.

In the Big 12, where Missouri, Kansas and Texas Tech have already upped the competition level, Nebraska and Texas A&M are banking on Bo Pelini and Mike Sherman, respectively, to restore those programs to their previous luster. Ditto for Hawkins at Colorado. If any or all succeed, and if Texas and Oklahoma maintain their recent level of success, the conference could conceivably reach SEC-level depth.

I would like to see the ratings on a year-in, year-out basis rather than a 5 year average.  I guess I should start routing for OU in non-conference games (which is not a problem for any other school in the conference, but OU?  Uggg.)

SEC level depth

Hummmm

The Big 12 is already at SEC level and depth if not passing it by.

The only thing that SEC has that the Big 12 does not have is deep pocket money from large corporations.

With More AP writers and more sports newsmen located out east its no wonder there has been a media bias for the SEC even when they are sucking and are not at the high levels that the media kisses their way.

SEC has more money because simpy the eastern part of the US has more people.

Why does some programs like OU seem to have more money than some schools. Simply Oklahoma only funds 3 Universities at Teir 1 status. Texas is suposed to fund 6 schools at Teir 1. But the truth is that Texas unequally funds its state schools. Texas and Texas A&M get more money than they should while the other 4 schools like Texas Tech must make do or look for other avenues which they can get money.

Thus this is an issue across the board. But honestly, the SEC just in Football gets more love than they really should. I often wondered what would happen if some of the SEC schools would do if they really had to play some real teams before bowl season. Some of the SEC schools play AAA schools as part of its non conference schedule. Some of the SEC schools have not played west of the mississippi river. Make one wonder how they maintain such high postings when they do not do well in bowl games either.

As far as preseason polls and some of the media polls, it just does not match reality.

Over time it will correct itself. But that could take up to a decade for that to happen. What is part of this perception is location of some of the bowl games. The BCS bowls as well are mostly located in the SEC localities. Then you have issues like Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl and Sugar bowl which are considered high level bowls. Yet the SEC gets automatic bids to those bowls and the massive amounts of money that goes with it.

The BSC bowls need to be modified. There are 28 bowls possible. The NCAA could change up which bowls would be a BCS based on locality in the nation based on the BCS poll. Thus if you have options of playing two high level teams outside the SEC for a high level bowl.

Right now, SEC sends 5 teams to high level bowls through automatic bids. That is not right. Thus in order for these games to be looked at rightly, the media boosts the polls for some SEC teams that is never done to other conferences.

I am not throwing out sour grapes. But I do see a bias when it comes to TV and media coverage of games.

In fact, SEC, ACC, PAC 10 and Big 10 have networks that only show schools from their prespective conferences with TV and other items.

My question is why does the Big 12 not have a Big 12 TV network? Even Norte Dame has its own TV network along with NBC. A team which had only one victory last season had a perfect schedule TV coverage. That is unheard of in most conferences. Even when NBC does not always cover then the Norte Dame channel does cover it.

This is true for USC, Florida and Michigan to LSU. There is a disparity in media coverage that is not always reflective to the excuses given. It used to be that games were not sold out so TV could not be done. But when Florida and Michigan had those few games not sold out, it opened some eyes as to why they got preferencial treatment for TV coverage.

True it may be a market issue because Chicago and Orlando area seems to be good for revenue. But honestly, the revenue is the same for a Nebraska, OU, Texas and yes even Texas Tech. Texas Tech actually brought in more revenue during post season than LSU.

Something you never get to see. Because Tech fans seem to spend more money than tight wad LSU and West Virginia fans which also rated fairly low as well.

Do not always buy into the SEC lie that they are the better schools just because some AP poll says so.
