I'm Angry But I Shouldn't Be

This makes me angry.  This  makes me angry, but I shouldn't even care.  I'm angry because Jean-Jacques Taylor baited the hook and I'm biting.  I'm even more angry because he's got a gig writing for a major publication, but apparently the DMN prefers articles/writers/blog posts that are ill informed and simply full of conjecture.

Don't get me wrong, I can be full of conjecture as well, but I'd like to think that I put a little bit of reasoning behind my thoughts.

Quite simply, it's bad because it's lazy. It's a guy from School X going to School Y's message board and throwing out a little hate to try and stir the hornets' nest. . What I really think this is is the DMN's attempt to get people to pay attention to his Taylor's blog, which I suppose he's done. The DMN put out the teaser on their college blog to suck us all in and it worked. Not only that, but Taylor also tried to suck in the Longhorn faithful as well as the Aggies.

I'm guessing that someone had an assignment sitting on their desk this morning.

DMN you're supposed to be better than that.

But let's get back to Taylor's argument, which is that the Texas Tech defense isn't getting any better until he sees it for himself.

What a shitty argument.

Really?

That's all you've got?

How about a few statistics or let's throw out that comparatively speaking, Texas Tech wasn't that bad in total defense last year, at least in-conference. I would guess that by Taylor's tremendous theory Kansas shouldn't have been any good last year as they finished 10th in total defense in 2006, but finished 1st in total defense in 2007.

Keep in mind, I'm incredibly hopeful that the defense is going to be absolutely stellar, but I think most Texas Tech fans have a pretty realistic concept that it's not perfect, but it is improving.  Most of us understand that this typically doesn't happen over-night, but it does happen over time and Texas Tech is showing steady improvement on the defensive side of the ball, not to mention, there is a discernible difference in the athletes on that side of the ball compared to years' past.

I get that the DMN is trying to increase it's online readership, but don't do it this way.

Please.

Don't be mad

This is just funny to me. This guy and an article I saw in the Oklahoman are both saying “Tech can’t win without a defense”…well DUH. NO SH** SHERLOCK! These idiots have no clue what’s going on. Do they think Tech fans don’t know this? OF COURSE WE KNOW WE NEED A DEFENSE! But the reason we are optimistic this year is because it’s actually looking like we’ll have one. Getting a new attitude with Ruff was just one piece. We have experience, depth, and an injection of talent with some stud d-linemen. Pair that up with a defense that actually practices tackling, and it’s like a perfect storm for our Red Raiders.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…we don’t need a top 10 defense, we just need a defense that will make a few plays that can swing us from 4 losses down to 1 or 2 losses. We weren’t that far from it last season (Ok St, Colorado, UT).

I am proud, though, of the way our fans commented on that article. Very civil and more or less “yeah we know…they’ve got to prove it.” Extremely classy compared to the way ags fumed about the DCTF cover.

Yes

It was a “duh” moment for me too. Texas Tech has a bad defense? I loathe JJT and shouldn’t have even linked to him, but I did. Booo, me.

I just wasted 45 seconds of my life reading that

Yes, Jean-Jacques Taylor, a team can’t possibly improve from one year to another. Just like Missouri couldn’t get over its bedwetting past last season under Gary Pinkel and Chase Daniel.

Oh, and the upset that “we know is going to happen”? Doesn’t he need to see it first?

That was almost as bad as Bob Lutz and Jason Whitlock.

I didn't mean to

waste anyone’s time, and I should have asked everyone not to click on the link.

My issue is

there isn’t anything substantive in the article besides his suggestion that we’re this year’s OSU. That’s really the only bit of reasoning in the above.

It’s really a boring point; Tech will fail if the defense fails. Well who doesn’t know that?

Go register. Or else.

Sounds like some TV announcer

That know-it-all announcer who says…“I think the team that scores more points than the other team will win the game.”

It is a boring point, and as

other have said, if the defenses play out like last year, it’s not going to take much more improvement to be in the top 3 teams defensively.

Opinions are like …….

You know the rest. This is the biggest down side to the proliferation of the internet media, 100s of TV channels, and the transformation of AM radio to a talk format. The quality of information being put out has tanked due to the fact that there are not enough good reporter/commentators to fill the positions. The death of Jim McKay really brought this home to me. McKay was a great journalist who just happened to cover sports; can you say that about any of ESPN’s current talking heads? The Blog world has given voice to narcissistic anal retentive people. They could not get people to listen to them if they were in a face to face conversation unless they were your boss, preacher, a judge, or your father in-law. Seth I know they tic you off, that is what DMN wanted, along with giving Aggie and T-sippers someone to agree with. You provided a link to the page and DMN gets more hits, more hits equals charging more to place ads on their site. DMN did not get into the Blog business to do quality reporting, it was to drive revenues to keep the print side in the black. It is much more easy and cost effective to start a controversy than to do quality research and develop an opinion based on facts when you main goal is to drive hits. Now you know why I like DTN, you do your home work, and your not so stricken with RR love to be unrealistic about the program.

Cool your jets man,
Ignore the A-holes,
Keep up the good work.

But at least everyone

knows where I stand. I’ve been in the DFW area for almost all of my life and I’ve always thought that JJT was a less than talented writer. I suppose more than anything else I find it frustrating that he gets paid to write. I know I shouldn’t have even linked to him and I think I rarely get upset, but he was just begging to be told to be a better writer.

Thanks for the kind words.

Or a better thinker. But I’m not sure that can be as easily fixed.
